There's 40 of the worst things he's ever drawn. Click the link at the end of the article for the next 40.

As bad as Rob Liefeld is, he's still better than guys like Juan Doe, or the shiatty American Manga style that was popular a while ago.

2012-10-24 12:51:30 PM
I would be able to forgive him being a terrible artist if he weren't also a total douchebag.

All the bad things about comics in the 1990s were the fault of Rob Liefeld and Todd McFarlane. The sooner these guys retire from comics, the better off we'll all be.

I'll give you that. Anyone who tries to draw American comics with that faux manga style makes me want to chew my eyes out. Leave that shiat for the manga fans.

2012-10-24 12:56:49 PM
The real problem with Liefield is that he obviously CAN draw but refuses to improve/take life drawing classes or spend any time on his craft. Seriously, he makes enough money to spend it on some drawing classes. He spends his time making comics, he can take some drawing classes.

As someone who lost interest in comics in his teens (early 90s) because every character suddenly had the mutant power of being really good with a giant laser gun, I'll take a stab at it.

He ushered in the Dork Age of comics. Not by himself, of course, but suddenly everyone was darker and edgier, had a jaw like the Xenomorph and 108 teeth, with their mouth expressions either being a line 2mm across or drawn back in an insane rictus befitting the Joker. Musclelly guys with names like Bloodgun that wielded giant guns plus katanas in every configuration possible, including double bladed katanas that stuck out at angles that make no sense. Oh, and weird mullet ponytails. Everyone had that weird Jedi rat-tail thing going on. I dropped out of comics for about ten years, and really had no idea who this Liefeld character was until clued in. Suddenly it was crystal clear where the art direction had come from. The weird thing is that the suits and everybody else went gaga for it, like some mass delusion.

And here is the crux of it: finally, here was a guy that every person that had ever doodled a comic character in homeroom could point to and say: "I CAN DRAW BETTER THAN THAT." And instead of acting like a geek that had won the cosmic lottery and been dumped into a lucky position, acted like an ass. Furthermore, he never improved his style or technique. That says a lot. I hear at conventions people hand him copies of "How to Draw the Marvel Way." His errors are fixable. He just chooses not to, I think, and continues to be terrible.

Raug the Dwarf: Worst of Liefeld

Thanks for the link and the laughs. Back in the 90's, when i was bangin' -- I read a Liefield comic book or two. I get that he's not the best comic book artist and some of the hate toward him comes from that. I haven't read any interviews with him, so I'm not caught up on his personality.

I guess I am just more forgiving when it comes to comic book art. Liefield straddled the line between (extremely) exaggerated / stylized and traditional Jack Kirby type of stuff. Liefield's anatomy is laughable. I always hated looking at the thumbs he drew.

I was always a fan of Sam Keith and Keith Giffen.

Good points. I supposed I blocked much of that out. I know most of his characters were ripoffs of marvel characters and everything was Bloodwulf or Bloodsport or Youngblood. Those comics became parodies of themselves.

Ok, I'm on the bandwagon.

The first time I saw a picture of Deadpool I thought someone had decided to do reboot Spider-man with guns.

Glad to have pitched for the cause: I'll admit my distaste for Liefeld isn't as bad as others if only because I avoided most of his major work when it was coming out. It wasn't until retrospectively as I was catching up that I started saying "what the heck is all this?"

The problem with calling what Liefeld does "a style" is that most of his style consists of what normal people would call "mistakes". Nobody is claiming that comic book characters should look like anatomical dummies, but anatomy is only one of Liefeld's many failings.

He's lazy, and it shows. Many of his panels were obviously drawn without any planning whatsoever. Weapons hover in people's hands as an afterthought. Lines that should be parallel- like the line from the handle of a sword down its blade- meet at 50 degree angles. Characters get dubbed into shots without respect to anything else in the shot- almost like he was playing with Colorforms. And those are just the technical errors.

He's not much on composition, either. Many of his action shots are confusing jumbles of lines that fail to actually convey what the action is supposed to be. Shots that don't involve action are usually blandly blocked with characters just standing around. It's very clear that Liefeld loves to draw, but he doesn't love to work at it.

That said, I'll grant that he's greatly improved over the years.

That gun was clearly added in later, presumably by the technique of layering Colorforms.

There must be a very shallow bench of comic book talent available because Liefield keeps getting hired over and over. I don't think the guy deserves the level of hate he gets but he really can not draw well and his stories are bland and yet he keeps getting control of books.

The next time someone wants to hire him I would love it if they gave some nobody a shot instead.

Liefeld keeps getting hired because he sells comics... at least, at first.

For some reason, Liefeld taps into the 13-year-old who just discovered tits and guns in comic book fans, and people turn out in droves to buy the first couple issues of whatever he's working on, until they remember just how bad his art is.

Sometimes you open a comic book and you're a little disappointed. In my day it could've been George Tuska, Don Heck or Don Perlin. Occasionally a strong inker would save it but more often it would be Colleta or Trapani or worse. "Well, I hope the story's good."

Rob Liefeld changed all that.

"Well, thank God it's not Liefeld!"

I have a confession to make. I'm the reason this assclown ever got famous. I started collecting comics in the late 80s/early 90s when I was a younging--long before I was familiar with concepts like anatomy, storytelling, coherent writing, compelling characterization, panel-to-panel consistency, having 32 teeth, and eyes with irises. I bought many copies of X-Force #1 and probably even more copies of Youngblood #1. I bought every knockoff team book that he "developed". I bought the knockoff books that his protoges did. I thought it was quality. Of course, I thought that hair metal was good back then, too. I was young and stupid.

I have since learned the error of my ways. However, the damage is done. He still guarantees that regardless of how half-assed his work is, people will buy his shiat for nostalgia. Sadly, the comics industry suffers for my poor judgement as a child.

Please forgive me.

It wasn't only Liefeld.

In that era, Talented artists were routinely shunted aside for Liefeld, American Manga hacks, and just generally shiatty artists.

Of course, these days, most good artists couldn't keep a monthly schedule if you gave them a two year head start, so there's a need for the shiatty but fast artists.

Hell yeah. Pouch-chic is probably why I have a soft spot for Cable and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Liefeld draws like WWE wrestlers talk; overblown, sometimes incoherent, and extreme.

I think Liefield only gets away with it because most of his audience isn't actually looking at the what he's scribbled.
Coloring aside, its outright malformed.

/I can think of a few Mangaka that could outdraw this guy on both quantity and quality.
/Hell, I can think of a few artists from Deviantart that could wipe the floor with him.
