Funny how I never have to "calibrate" my computer.

Fark electronic voting without hard-copy.

Bullshiat that should have been corrected long, long ago.

Thought this was funny, when taken out of context:

One of the voters, Sher Coromalis, says she cast her ballot for Governor Mitt Romney, but every time she entered her vote it defaulted to President Obama.

2012-10-24 10:48:41 AM
Guilford County Board of Elections Director George Gilbert says the problem arises every election. It can be resolved after the machine is re-calibrated by poll workers.

Having worked in IT development, consulting, and support my entire adult life, I have to say, "That is not an acceptable answer."

Yay, problem solved.

Faulty machine is faulty...and I suspect we'll see more than one before this election is over. Yay for inked paper ballots with receipt, my country at least does something right.

When you've got a record like Obama's, you need some fraud to get you over the hump.

If it was fraud it wouldn't have shown up on the screen. It also wouldn't be in favor of Obama.

It is a good example of what's wrong with electronic voting.

Faulty machine corrected. I'd go on about how this is voter fraud, but since Republicans said there is nothing wrong with Romney's family buying voting machines to be used in Ohio, I see nothing wrong here.

This is so awesome! A few weeks back there was a thread about companies close to the Romney campaign would be supplying the voting machines for swing states (here in Colorado, we'll be getting them), and I cried voter fraud. But, apparently I was wrong as it's being perpetrated on the other side of the fence.

Well, if Romney steals Obama's campaign platform and campaign slogan, I guess it's fair to steal the Right's tactics.

/it's not really fair

What's wrong with putting a pencil mark in a circle?

First of all, have paper ballots where people put an "X" in a circle.

However, if you are going to automate it. Give people a code when they vote, a receipt with a code that only they have which is linked in the database to the vote (not the voter).

They should be able to look-up their code online later on a web-site to see that their vote recorded properly. Any person, should be able to download a file with all the votes with their corresponding codes by Poll/State.

I think because such a ballot is a clear representation of election fraud.

Not only are all of them dead, they were never alive at the same time. Obviously there is some definitive shenanigans at Elections Canada or they are still afraid to question Sheila Copps.

Here you go:

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP FOX8) -The Presidential election is just around the corner and voting issues have already become a problem in Guilford County.

On Monday, several voters complained that their electronic ballot machine cast the wrong vote. All the complaints were made by people who voted at the Bur-Mil Park polling location.

One of the voters, Sher Coromalis, says she cast her ballot for Governor Mitt Romney, but every time she entered her vote it defaulted to President Obama.

"I was so upset that this could happen," said Coromalis.

Guilford County Board of Elections Director George Gilbert says the problem arises every election. It can be resolved after the machine is re-calibrated by poll workers.

"It's not a conspiracy it's just a machine that needs to be corrected," Gilbert said.

After the third try, Coromalis says she was able to get her vote counted for Gov. Romney but was still annoyed.

"I should have just mailed it in," Coromalis said.

Elections officials say the machines have been fixed as of Tuesday, and no problems have been reported since.

Early Voting ends November 3.

That didn't occur to me but you are correct. Of course it would be illegal and no one could orchestrate a vote buying campaign that would be both effective enough to sway the vote and remain secret at the same time.

I still think it is a good idea.

One of these days I expect there to be a push to legalize vote-buying. There's nothing in the Constitution that says you can't sell your vote, and vote-buying (or rather, vote-selling) seems like a logical extension of freedom of speech/money.

2012-10-24 01:58:59 PM
Well, its not cool that it happened, but at least Republicans get a chance to see what Democrats have been dealing with for years.

They'll get it fixed. Still, It is a good warning for everyone though, regardless of who you vote for, to find a way to verify you ballot went to your intended choice. The chances of voter fraud are rather low, but the jury is still out on the reliability of the technology.

Why voting technology cannot be perfected is beyond me. This crap is ridiculous.

2012-10-24 02:00:24 PM
This is why you need the paper back up, not just for fraud but for computer error

2012-10-24 02:00:40 PM
I don't care if she was voting for Oscar the Grouch, the machine should record her vote correctly the first time and it should generate a paper receipt in case a recount is required.

dual databases. A verification key is created from the first machine. Second machine takes the key and reverse tabulates the votes fast from the first. The second machine then asks you to confirm and records the vote. Make sure both machines have a complete matching record.

vpb: doyner: Funny how I never have to "calibrate" my computer.

Does it have a touch screen? I have had to calibrate my phone. Touch screens require calibration sometimes.

True story: I was on a roof the other day, looking at some equipment that had a touch-screen control panel. In order to get access to this screen, I needed to stand on a rickety ladder standing in a puddle while rain fell on me. When I popped off the cover to get access to the panel, I saw a windows screen with multiple "unhandled exception error" messages scattered across this screen. I had to close all of them, but the touchscreen was so badly calibrated, that it was next to impossible to find the "x" to close the screen. Then, I had to find the icon on the desktop that started up the actual control interface I wanted to see in the first place. When that finally came up, again, this was difficult to navigate because of the clunky way the screen registered touch input. But I finally got everything together, buttoned up the equipment and went home. When I got home, I voted for Obama with my paper mail-in ballot.

So, pretty much the same experience this lady had.

I think there could be a problem with this scheme if secret ballots are preserved.

2012-10-24 02:03:06 PM
I'd say we need exclussively paper ballots in this country but Florida farked that up back in 2000.

Most people need some kind of adult supervision when they vote, like a voting proctor or something of that nature.

2012-10-24 02:03:34 PM
Just so we're clear, it was difficult to get the right selection - but possible - and you have to submit the vote AFTER its correct.

If that's Fraud, fraud ain't so bad.
