I wouldn't exactly call thousands of slack-jawed yokels who'd vote for Darth Vader if he had an (R) next to his name being funded by a handful of paleoconservative billionaires, and given limitless media attention by one outlet, to give the appearance of a populist "uprising"...well, a populist uprising.

I dunno. I might be willing to vote for Darth Vader depending on what his policies were. His long years of experience in paramilitary groups gives him unquestionable ability to lead, and as a practical vice-emperor for an entire galaxy he also knows a thing or two about governance. And he can force choke the idiots who blurts out that he wasn't born in the Republic, or Congress when they start in with the "One Term President" thing. But his downfall may be family issues... children out of wedlock, killed his wife vicariously, no contact with his children for 20 years...

It's really no surprise that republicans don't know what boats that go underwater are, for the last three days they've been denying the very existence of two major bodies of water.

Considering God intended women to get raped and impregnated, it's not a far stretch to think God is cool with focusing on zingers rather than policy in a debate.

Ha, sadly that is true enough. It's just that every Mormon I've met (admittedly few) seems to have been always trying to do the right thing, and were generally decent people, bless their deluded hearts. With Rombot, we have someone who has no moral compass but seems to believe in a lot of the Mormon doctrine---why else would he have called Russia our "greatest geopolitical foe" and donated millions to the LDS? So on the one hand he's devout and on the other he's such dishonest, deceitful, evil scum. Why don't they disown him? I don't get it.

bdub77: When you take sh*t completely out of context and cite 'number of ships' as a proxy for military power, don't be surprised when you get called out like you are a little child. Same goes for:

'you didn't build that'
debts and deficits
number of oil permits on federal lands
cost of oil
calling Libya a terrorist act
apology tours
cuts to Medicare

Mitt deserves to be treated with snark. So does Ryan. So does the whole GOP platform. It's built on manipulation and lies, and it has to stop.

I don't know. I'm kind of getting to like it. Especially now that it is failing as a vote-getting strategy.

Even though "undersea boat" might be technically accurate, I've never heard or read of a submarine referred to as anything other than a submarine, except in literature from the second world war, occasionally.

Well, first off, "The adjective submarine, in terms such as submarine cable, means "under the sea". The noun submarine evolved as a shortened form of submarine boat (and is often further shortened to sub).[citation needed] For reasons of naval tradition submarines are usually referred to as "boats" rather than as "ships", regardless of their size."

Second, if you were explaining the concept of a submarine to someone who has apparently never even heard of one (as Obama was sarcastically doing), how would you describe it? "Ship that goes underwater" is pretty much the first thing that comes to my mind.

farkplug: Even though "undersea boat" might be technically accurate, I've never heard or read of a submarine referred to as anything other than a submarine, except in literature from the second world war, occasionally.

...the term, of course, is shortened from the original "Submarine boat", and naval officers still refer to subs as boats.

Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: He tried being nice and compromising, and they walked all over him and then complained he wasn't a bigger doormat (2010 unemployment extension, the continued existence of Guantanamo Bay prison, the removal of single-payer as an option for discussion on the healthcare bill). At some point, you have to start hitting back. Good on him.

I'm still of the opinion that he's going to change dramatically in his second term. Not needing to worry about re-election with an improving economy and significantly reduced military involvement means that there's a LOT of leeway to call crap out.

I've recommended that the first thing he do is switch parties. Just to troll the Congressional GOP delegation.

B:) Next thing you know, Romney is suddenly Obama, I'd be pissed, too.

C:) Finally, Romney was making the most idiotic, childish statements ever. Obama is a father, he probably slipped into 'Dad' mode automatically.

D:) One more thing: Being an asshole is the Republican way now, why can't the Dems throw that back?

Two things:
a) I love that the "boats/ships" thing and the "we still issue bayonets" thing are the biggest attack points from the last debate. Pointless semantics make me laugh when the trolls are reduced to using that.
2) Romney said before the first debate they were preparing zingers to attack the President with to get the point across. Don't get all upset when your candidate gets a taste of his own medicine and can't handle it without sweating and having his son go on the attack
d) I love that the reasons Romney won the first debate are reasons that Obama lost the last two debates because it made him look unpresidential.

These debates have shown that Americans in general and the media especially score debates like boxing matches, not policy discussions. The first one showed that you can lie through your teeth, bully the moderator, and be an asshole to your more civil opponent, then get treated to a Roman Triumph for the next week. The remaining debates showed that getting right back in the bully's face is the effective countermeasure.

The biggest problem that could come from this is if the 2016 candidates watch these debates and try to ramp it up a notch to score even more points, and then the next candidates ramp it up more, and so on until eventually you end up with two people shouting over each other and hurling insults for 90 minutes straight... brought to you by Carl's Jr.

In the GWOT, not acting like the terrorists is a net positive for the US because the respect we gain eventually reduces the power and influence of our enemies.

I just don't see the same thing happening in US politics. It was OK for politics to be a sports match as long as the media was acting as referee and forcing everyone to play fair. Now that the media has abandoned that role there's no other option but to play as dirty as your opponent.

The sad thing, here, is that the "Roman Triumph" of which you speak is that for the first time, Romney was being treated as a serious candidate after eighteen months on the stump, and might have a possibility of winning, regardless how realistic or plausible that possibility may be.

It's the political equivalent of Argentina having declared the British defeated and throwing victory parades after having successfully invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands.

I don't have much respect for most religions, but this bullshiat was invented so recently and is so blatantly the best con of a con artists life that even Scientologists can point and laugh at Mormons.
