If Nirvana gets credit for anything, it's for mainstreaming the specific and godawful grunge genre.I give Trent Reznor more credit for changing the mainstream rock scene than anyone, given that Pretty Hate Machine came out in 1989. THAT is what destroyed spandex rock.
