A broken Kindle Fire HD, on the other hand, is a bit less of a financial tragedy

Inside the warranty period, they'll ship you a new unit second day no questions asked. Be sure to return the remains of the "defective" unit for full credit.

When you're streaming some movies on the couch, you're going to want a Kindle Fire HD.

No, if I'm on the couch, I'll just turn on the TV and watch it on a 55 inch screen instead.

In all seriousness, my wife is a non-techy, average computer user. She's been running a piece of shiat LG netbook for a few years. She saw the iPad mini and immediately wanted one. For what she wants, it's perfect. She's going to buy one with her Christmas money.

As a teacher, I can tell you that the iPad mini will kill in the education market. My school division has already begun equipping schools with iPads; my school has a cart, plus three in each classroom. For about $75,000 we could purchase enough iPad minis to get us to a 1:1 ratio. Meanwhile, we're fundraising to buy a playground - which costs $250,000 and I find completely asinine.

$250,000 for a new playground or new ipads + high load bearing chairs. Hmmmmmmmm...

They blew it on the price point. The rest fine, but why buy this when come Monday I will be able to get the Nexus 7 for 99$

If I want 10", I can haul out a netbook... and type on it! With an integrated keyboard, that also covers the screen when folded up. Ooooh! Neat-o!

7" tablets just make more sense for people who are actually mobile & have to be mobile. Anything I want to consume on a larger tablet, I can do just fine on a 7" tablet or phone or iPod Touch.

/Comics? The way the Comixology app browses the panels is awesome, even on a phone or the iPod Touch.

skinink: I'm shocked Gizmodo would be against an Apple product, especially since they were the ones who paid money to someone who found a pre-release iPhone in a bar. Then Apple got the lawyers after Gizmodo to get the phone back, after which Apple barred Gizmo from any Apple events. I'm shocked, I tell ya!

Khellendros: Bought a Nexus 7 about two months ago. There has been zero reason to regret this decision. Love it.
The 4.1.2 update to give it landscape view on the homescreen was really needed. It is a good tablet, though I wish Google would just put a SD slot on their Nexus products.

Yeah you could have done landscape home screen with a simple launcher app. Apex or nova launcher works dandy. Thats the beauty of android. If you don't like how it works, find an app and change it.

Kate Gosselin's Pap Smear: Mitt Romneys Tax Return: Doc Daneeka: Amazon?

Seems like either the Nook HD (better screen, microSD), or the Nexus 7 (pure Android, more Apps, Google services) would be a better non-iPad choice.

I'd only recommend the Nook if you are going to use it primarily as a ereader. The app store selection is limited and more expensive than Amazon or Google Play.

Unless your tech savvy and install a full fledge android OS on it.

Point and click seems like a great platform for consuming content.

Tablets are a better form factor for consuming and creating in an elementary school. Everything the students need is in one piece of equipment. Sitting in front of a computer all day doesn't make for a great ULE, and it's simply more engaging.

book it, the iPad mini will get a gigantic overhaul in less than 9 months. It will get a double resolution screen using the shrunken 32nm guts of the now completely discontinued iPad 3. Price will be $299. Apple loves making the first adopters of new product lines pay out their ass.

Exactly what I was thinking this afternoon. Apple completely messed this up with both iPads. The mini and the iPad 3 are glorified scams. Killing the iPad 3 just 6 months after announcing it is just wrong and against everything Apple. I mean, hate Steve Jobs all you want (and there's definitely things worth hating about him); but at least he established the schedule of revealing a new version every year which was good for Apple's customers. But Tim Cook et al. called those iPad 3 buyers "suckers" today. And the mini, as it's been said a million times now, is a iPad 2 that got shot by a shrink ray. The 2nd Generation iPad mini will almost certainly be a shrunken iPad 3 and that will actually make some sense.

Anyone who goes and buys an iPad mini is an idiot. Save the money and wait a few months.

I'm running CM7 on my Nook Color. It works fine for me but I think it's too fiddly for someone who isn't a techie. I thought B&N locked the boot loader of the Nook Tablet and Nook HD so you couldn't install alternative ROMs. I haven't been paying attention, has that changed in the last few months?

I'll prolly pick up a mini or a 3 in the next week because the apps are so developed. I use the eBay app the most--and if you read the reviews on the new android eBay app, it sucks. Apple's is almost awesome. Calculated shipping, etc. I'm a seller. Surprised with the 5 mp cam on the mini. I think the 3 has 8mp. That built in camera will save me time and money... No need to take sd cards out of the expensive Nikon, and waste those shutter clicks. For the thousand dollar items, I'll bust out the D, and the lights.

Wife wanted a prime. She got it. It's nice. eBay app sucks. iPhone is decent for surfing...

Whoever said students take care of iPads is smoking rocks. I buy them at auction from the schools, and most look like they've had a pick hammer taken to the screen. I don't care--I still get 80% of their value with a mangled unit. Fan bois are effing stupid--but I will accept their money.

Almost forgot to mention my 13 year old rolls with a nook color with cyangenmod 9 as his daily driver and never blinks an eye. Overclocked to 1.1ghz. Paid a whopping $80 for it on craigs list and fixed it up for him. Works for everything he wants. It's even content locked so no pron for him.

I need to see the MS tablets run legacy software before I am sold on it. If it will run Autocad, ArcGIS Desktop, Revit, or basically run any windows software then I am sold. Where there's pron there's a way :) . I'm kind of glad pron wasn't as easy to get when I was 13 as it is now, I would have never left the bathroom.

If I were going to buy a 7" tab today I'd get a Nexus 7 in a heartbeat. My daughter bought one a few weeks ago and it's a really nice device - much quicker and smoother than my Nook Color.

Way I'm hearing it (not necessarily actually true) is that the Surface RT is ARM Windows 8. So if they don't have ARM binaries, they can't run them on your computer. And everything will have to come through the App Store anyways (ARM Windows), which means a 30% jack in the price, since MSFT needs to take their cut.

/Now the Pro is x86, so maybe. I don't know how powerful it'll be though.

rocky_howard: 1.- Steve Jobs didn't want it. Which means they ran out of things Steve would DO and started doing the things Steve specifically rejected. Uh-oh Apple.

I think you're right here, but Jobs's opinions were not as good about software as he would have liked to think. Hardware, sure, but really he just yelled at the best people in the world until they gave him something he liked. I think OSX and iOS are going to get really awesome over the next few years without his "guidance".

rocky_howard: 2.- They're playing catch-up here. That's insane. Apple either breaks into markets without much competition (all-in-one computers, iPods, Smartphones) or creates new markets altogether (personal computer, iPad, even the iPhone to some extent.) That's how they get insane margins and brand positioning.

Apple is filling in the gaps here. What should they have come out with? Some crazy thing that none of us can even imagine? What are they, magic?

They make computer shiat. They also make keyboards, mice, wifi routers and various me-too things that companies make. Not everything Apple does has to drag the cum out of every nerd's dick.

I've got a Samsung Galaxy Note phone and it does everything I need a tablet to do when I am on the go. For bigger tablet stuff, I got the Galaxy Note 10.1, which kicks ass over any tablet I have tried. Photoshop works great with the pen and so does S-note. It's one of if not the most powerful tablets on the market right now with a quad core 1.4 gHz processor, and I paid $499 for the 32 GB wifi version. The Ipad 3 is, what? $500 for only a 16GB?

Now that Apple has abandoned the ipad 3 months after shipping I hope some people see the light and quit buying apple. Ipad 3 and ipad mini are the biggest customer rape jobs in recent history.

/Hope Samsung sues the nads off apple for copying the Galaxy Note series with the Mini

But that's exactly the way they market themselves to the world. "It just works", "automagically", etc. So don't blame me for holding them up to their self-inflicted standard.

Yes, I realize you can't make quantum leaps in every iteration, but that's exactly why creating ultra high expectations on the public is a bad investment long term.

Since the beginning, Apple's trick has been overselling their products, and oversell them by quite a margin. They tried to pass off the 1984 OG Macintosh as having speech capable AI or talking about how it'll make you a regular van Gogh with its graphics, On a freaking 7 Mhz CPU and with 128K of RAM! Not even the most powerful i7 desktop with 32 GB of RAM can be true AI (although we can become regular Van Goghs now thanks to Photoshop/Painter lol).

That's definitive.

Have you seen this with anything besides bullshiat software like office? Can you point me to something showing Surface Pro running Civil 3d, or maybe full fledge cs6? Until I can see something besides "on paper" claims I will stick to Splashtop from galaxy note and iPad. At least with a $10 app I can play my precious Diablo 3, and remotely do whatever the hell I want on my big arse energy sucking gaming rig wherever I am with an Internet connection.

/prove me wrong
//I will preorder one ASAP

Fwiw, I've done porting of a 3-d intensive app to integrated graphics. My experience with the integrated graphics on sandybridge and ivybridge is that they are able to handle most things aside from newer games or overly complicated CAD models with a decent frame rate.

Unfortunately, I just don't think the price tag on the surface pro makes it at all interesting. For what I assume its going to cost, why not just get an ultra book?

The price is high because it's not loaded with OEM bloat that pushes current PC prices down.

jaytkay: Yeah, that Apple company has just been fooling everybody for decades.

If only the Apple stockholders knew THE TRUTH!1!! behind their phony gains.

You should stand on street corners and shout at people about how this is WRONG!!

Funny, your scale only barely shows that their stock has lost nearly $100 (~14%) in value in the past month. (well, $87.35 since Sept. 21)

that's a link to "on paper". I want to see ms surface pro running 3rd party windows 7/8 software. I want to believe the "magic". I want a hand held device that runs everything that my bug rig pc does, within the tablets means.

I want hard proof of someone installing any .exe downloaded off the web. I find it more along the lines of "magic" that MS is going to actually put a full blown Windows handheld PC in our hands this month.

I'll give you my gaming rig if it happens.

Because Ultra books have shiat GPUs. That's why. Intel GPUs are an abomination.

Installed the same OS that's going on the Surface Pro (the x86 version of Windows 8 Pro) onto my convertible tablet PC. Adobe CS6 works fine (that's what I edited the photo with), and the Autodesk Suite works fine too.

jayhawk88: But everyone is losing their shiat over the new iMac, because it's so thin. You know, because all the countless hours you looked at your computer from the side have really taken their toll.

THIS

Thinner desktop PCs are a bad thing, because it means that more and more of it is wired to the motherboard, for little gain. I can't dig all-in-one PCs at all. I've got a space under my desk where a tower can happily live and I get lower maintenance costs.

Cyangenmod FTW!!!

I dual boot ICS with WebOS on my fire sale touchpad. I rarely use the WebOS though. ICS runs smooth as silk on this thing. Cyanogenmod FTW indeed.

/I put it on myself and I'm no tech genius really. There is plenty of instruction out there. The biggest hurdle for me was not wanting to brick the tablet somehow. Once I got past that paranoia, installing android was fairly easy.
//not sure how easy it is on other devices.
