This is kind of a low bar to cross.

So, yesterday was the presidential debate on foreign policy (which has broadly been defined as whatever Romney feels is relevant) and you want to talk about how the fashion industry favors Mrs. Obama over Mrs. Romney. So, even Fox knows Romney was slaughtered. Good to know.

Mrs. Romney is the richer of the two; she has only herself to blame if she doesn't hire a good stylist.

2012-10-23 10:23:29 AM
Ok, well this is the least relevant point of this, but I'mma give it a shot:

Women who have had to budget know how to shop for flattering clothes. Although most women can look at a garment and have a general idea if it's flattering, they can't afford to throw away money on stuff without trying it on. They also know how to work with the fewest number of pieces, and stylish women on a budget understand the "one good piece makes an outfit" theory. And finally, because they can't afford to buy a dress, wear it once and throw it away, they will make sure they WANT that dress, that it looks good on them.

Now, I don't think Michelle Obama cares about prices NOW, but for most of her life, she did.

Ann Romney, on the other hand, has never needed to look at a price tag, or browse through the sale rack. I think Ann Romney is often very nicely turned out. However, every once in a while she looks like she's trying to start a trend, because she has to money to do so, and it...it doesn't work.

I didn't think her dress was BAD yesterday, but I did think it was too young for her. It would have looked better on one of her daughters in law.

What was really funny was the designers' response to that:

"We had nothing to do with it," a rep for designer Reed Krakoff said. "She must have bought it from Saks or Bergdorf's, we definitely didn't send it to her."

"It's 100 percent a Reed Krakoff shirt, but we 100 percent didn't send it to her," the rep added.

Look, until fashion designers start chasing Ann Romney out of their stores with baseball bats and machine guns I'm going to go ahead and call bullsh*t.

I really don't like to be shallow, but the first thing I said at the end of the debate was "what a beautiful dress Michelle has on!" Ann, not so much.

2012-10-23 01:37:27 PM
And the reason I end up going into the office looking like a crazy person fell into a dumpster outside of H&M is clearly because Michael Kors is boycotting me for my political views.

It can't possibly be my crappy taste in clothes.

Money can't buy taste...

Ann Romney has enough money she could afford to hire someone with her exact physical structure to do all of her clothing shopping for her. She has enough money she could hire an entire team of stylists to find the right clothes for her to wear. She has enough money she could buy a factory in China to make knockoffs of any designer outfit she wanted.

Precious Roy's Horse Dividers: So the fashion industry is now part of the vast liberal conspiracy? The Party of Personal Responsibilty strikes again

Does anyone have a current version of the list of groups conspiring against the Republicans?

2012-10-23 03:17:24 PM
First of all there is a huge difference between the First Lady and the spouse of a candidate.

Second of all it is her personal responsibility to use the free market as she sees fit. Does she really have trouble dressing herself? Isn't that pretty bad? Do you want an article highlighting that even if you think you can spin it a different way?

Third, maybe the reason that Michelle Obama looks better in that dress is because she just looks better in general.

2012-10-23 03:31:10 PM
Sweet Jesus, I'm beginning to think being a Republican is a mental disorder: paranoid delusional.

Political feelings aside, I really loved Anne's dress last night and would be very excited to have one for myself. I did not feel that way about Mrs. Obama's.

Worth repeating. In a month, Ann Romney may be just another rich woman with multiple Cadillacs. While Michelle Obama will still be the First Lady.

I don't understand why these guys don't date younger

2012-10-23 03:38:39 PM
We should not judge these women on what they wear, or how they look dressed. Let's see them nude and then decide.
Let's see the bare facts !

2012-10-23 03:38:53 PM
Michelle is just naturally attractive and successful

2012-10-23 03:38:59 PM
Maybe people who care about fashion care more about what the ACTUAL first lady is wearing, compared to the fashion of the wife of a guy who is running for president?

While I think it's important that the republicans don't win this election, I think people are focusing a little too much on just the presidency alone.

There's also the issues with the Senate and the House of Representatives. I mean, what will one candidate do if he's alone?.

She generally wears stuff that is too young and hip for someone like her. (Like that shirt in the first photo posted here... great for a funky 20-something. Not so much for an ageing conservative housewife.) Mutton dressed like lamb is never a good look no matter how much money your husband shiats out...

2012-10-23 03:40:43 PM
If the fashion world is steering clear of Ann, it is probably because of her husband's backwards stance on gay marriage, health care, etc. She has money and that is usually all the fashionistas care about.

That said, I think Michelle has good taste and knows what colors and styles flatter her height, frame and coloring. Meanwhile, Ann chooses expensive things and assumes that they must be flattering by virtue of their high prices.

That's a Redback spider, a member of the same family as a Black Widow. It has a painful but treatable bite, and covered under Obama care.

I just saw the debate (on mute) at the local pastahouse, so I'm pretty new to the people involved. I thought Mrs. Romney's dress would be quite lovely for your everyday event (and yeah, if you were younger). I'm not saying it's twinset and pearls time but it wasn't picnic on the grass time either, yeah?

I very much liked Mrs. Obama's dress. I thought it was sober without being severe. However, I KNOW that's a matter of personal taste, so my mileage varied.

You are so right -- lots of American's get lazy and forget that every two years, even without a President to elect, we still have to elect congressman and other people. People biatch and moan about the president, but our congressional representatives are just as if not more powerful. The Presidential race is just sexier to the media because it is the one office for which "every" American will vote.

2012-10-23 03:49:14 PM
Well, shiat, YOU try designing haute couture that properly conceals the Magic Underwear... no wonder designers prefer Michelle.

2012-10-23 03:49:44 PM
This makes sense, considering Romney's stance on gay rights.
