Just because someone denies something, doesn't mean it hurts them if it is later revealed they were wrong.

In fact, i'd say Global Warming or not, Global Warming deniers will have the exact same life span as Global Warming proponents.

Sorry, I was absent the day we went over Pirates-Global Warming. Ask me about Guns and Butter in Economics though... I had that one nailed.

Yes as can clearly be seen on the chart global warming goes up as number of pirates goes down (except the first two numbers which are reversed of course)

Can we stop calling it Global Warming, when it also causes colder winters as well?

/though climate change was a better thing to call it.

Yeah but now, thanks to the low numbers of pirates, it`s about to start warming quickly.

Exactly. Arguing the toss on the internet will not change in the slightest what the temperature will be in 50 years.

There might be no pirates at all then!

And if they didn't have any means to get out of Pompeii, I suppose the people who denied Mt. Vesuvius was about to erupt had the same lifespan as those who warned that it would. Unlike that situation we're in a situation where the deniers can actively block any means of mitigating the problem.

Not entirely sure what point you're trying to make here.

By any to you mean all? Is that even possible? They can block ALL means of mitigating the problem or just some? But what if, in order to eradicate pirates, we must continue to do things that exacerbate the global warming problem? Do we then ignore pirates in order to stop global warming? That won't work for me.

I guess that most people who say Global Warming is going on.. there main goal is to win the arguement, not to do anything about it. To me, its a political debate. If you're a Liberal, you want to poke your fingers at big bad Republicans who don't care about the environment.... for what? bragging rights? ha, ha i told you so? Do these people leave any less of a carbon footprint, or burn less fossil fuels than a conservative? Do they even try? What is the whole goal of the argument?

Meh. The decrease in pirates probably correlates better with global temperature than does carbon dioxide. Talk like a pirate day must have stopped global warming 16 years ago. But, like all pirate movies, this article is rated arrrrrr.

There are a number of things we could do to slow CO2 production and mitigate the problem, and as well there are situations we can predict such as moving agricultural zones, water scarcities etc that we can plan for.

There's a big, well-funded contingent saying "there is no problem! everything is under control!" that, if not outright owning politicians such as Congressman "We're so sorry we got water in your oil, BP!" Barton or Senator "may I suck you off again, Lord Exxon?" Inhoefe are at least on their way towards that, and there's also a lot of money going towards "fair and balanced" media that gets clowns like that elected.

You or I don't have a lot of impact on global problems as individuals. Policies do. If we don't have this discussion, then someone else with money will and will dominate it entirely.

Ignoring it has a very predictable effect of allowing it to become that much worse and farking us all over.

I would say that there is a silver lining to the piracy issue. That would be Combined Task Force 151, linked in the article. From their website:

CTF 151 is presently commanded by the Thai Navy. It has previously been commanded by the Denmark Navy, Korean Navy, Pakistan Navy, Turkish Navy and U.S. Navy. The command staff is comprised of personnel from a number of coalition countries, and it manages daily operations from aboard RFA Fort Victoria.

Almost, but not quite, as effective as having a McDonalds franchise in each country. Hopefully these guys are networking and friending one another on Facebook or something. Maybe they tend each others' farms.

Why is it that whenever a submitter uses a tag that references how amusing or funny his headline is, it's always really dumb?

All weather is heat driven, in engineering it would be referred to as a heat engine. A heat engines output is determined by the size of its heat reservoir that it is being fed by and the size of the cold reservoir that it is sinking that heat into. More available thermal energy of course means more output wattage. Imagine taking the little induction motor out of your freezer and replacing it with a v8.

It`s more like voltage and potential difference and how it relates to the amount of work that can be done. The absolute temperature is not as important as the difference between weather fronts. The worst storm AFAIK was in winter when some cold air met some REALLY cold air and the temperature difference was very large.

As the poles are warming faster than the rest of the planet this will reduce the potential difference and should lead to less violent, muggy weather on average.
