monkwich: dave2198: Mid_mo_mad_man: dave2198: A little perspective is in order...

The Cardinals lost their top 2 hitters from last year due to either free agency or injury, lost their best pitcher for almost the entire season, losttheir Hall of Fame-bound manager, and lost their longtime pitching coach, and STILL were onegame away from getting to the World Series again.

So... yeah.

All which would have been moot with out MLB changing the playoff setup

So? Is that the Cardinals' fault?

If the Cardinals are so horrible, why couldn't Atlant beat them? Or Washington?

Maybe those teams didn't belong in the playoffs, if they couldn't beat such a horrible team?

there is no need to pay attention to midmomadman. all you need to know about him is he was probably beating off into his royal's snuggie all night. you should have nothing but pity for him for having to cheer for that perennial loser.

I have it on good authority that the Tigers win in 5. In Detroit. On my birthday.

lakrfool: lakrfool: Too bad they are already in an 0-3 hole against a well-rested Tigers squad.

Being well rested going into a major playoff series is not necessarily a mark in a team's favor. In '06 the Tigers went from a short LCS into the WS with plenty of rest and lost in 5 games to a Cardinals team that played all seven in the NLCS. There's other instances where a team that had to fight for their very playoff lives right down to the wire smacked the hell out of a team that's done nothing but scratch their balls for a week.

Verlander.

Verlander was on the 2006 team that lost the World Series.

Anarchangel: Seriously, this is just amazing to watch. fark the triple hit - his bat nearly put itself back together again by the time he finished swinging.

Only Hunter Pence.

Thanks for that .GIF. Awesome.

Not only does the bat seem to reassemble itself - watch the spin of the ball change THREE TIMES during the hit.

I would not be surprised if some physics majors get snapped up by bat manufacturers trying to see if they can make a bat do something like that intentionally.

Also, this could only happen to hunter freaking pence - whos arm seems to act as weirdly as that bat every time he throws the ball. I think the best description Ive heard is that he throws "like the last guy picked for a softball team" yet he is weirdly effective.

This guy has no fundamentals. He doesn't care.

2012-10-23 01:27:50 PM
Also... One bat fragment seems determined to impale pence in the heart - it even changes direction in the attempt.

/everything looks sinister in super slow mo, I suppose

I like how all the Tigers fanboys in this thread are so incredibly confident not only that the Tigers are going to win, but that the only question is whether it'll be over in 4 games or if the Giants will somehow manage to pull out a win and stretch it out to 5. And this is about a team that finished the season with more wins than exactly zero of the teams that made the postseason, including the wild card teams, and yet they can't lose, right?

Yes, Justin Verlander is probably the best pitcher in the game right now--no argument there. Yes, the Tigers are peaking at the right time. But the outcome is still far from certain. As a Giants fan, though, I love the overconfidence. It's worked out so well for the other teams this postseason.

That might affect the hitters, but pitchers spend a week scratching their balls all the time. Big difference between 2006 and 2012 is the Tigers' starting rotation. Even it it takes a couple games to wake up the bats, the pitching can keep Detroit in it.

It takes 162 games, and sometimes 163, to determine the best team in the regular season, but it only takes 11 to determine the best team in the playoffs. Do you really think that the "best" team always wins in the playoffs?

//I am not saying the playoffs are not awesome or worthwhile, just that they rarely identify the "best" team.

Didn't see anyone really making any predictions; mainly just some amusing comments about Star Wars and the normal kind of "my team is better than your team, nah, nah" stuff that fans of both teams were doing.

Also, in what was does fan overconfidence have anything at all to do with how players play on the field?

Wasn't Looking at his Neck: "STOP BEING CONFIDENT WHEN ONLY WE'RE ALLOWED TO!"

I'm not confident. I think the odds are that the Tigers will win the series--with Verlander starting 2 of the first 5 games, the Giants are probably looking at coming back home to S.F. for Game 6, optimistically, down 2 games to 3. But then again, I wasn't optimistic that they were going to beat the Reds or the Cards either, and we all know what happened there.

Either way, though, I'd never suggest that this series is a sure bet to go one way or the other. If I were a Tigers fan, I'd be a bit more confident about my team's chances, but I sure as hell wouldn't suggest that it's a near certainty that the Tigers will win. I'd say it's about a 60/40 chance in the Tigers' favor. (Actually, I was a Tigers fan when I was little, because I was born in Detroit though we moved out west when I was little--but I've been a Giants fan since about age 7. I do still have a place in my heart for the Tigers, though, and would be rooting for them against any NL team other than the Giants.)

Sorry, I only meant to snark the first paragraph. What I meant further down my post was that if the Giants' batters come out like it's game 7 all over, whether Verlander gets moody bummed instead of "fark's sake Justin, resolve this now" pissed might bode well for SF against the next starter's motivation and so on. Especially if Detroit's batting stays diminished like earlier in the CS.

I have no idea what your getting at so let me lay it out as simply as possible. Playoffs are fun, exciting, and worthwhile, but they are not the "best" way to determine who is the "best" team in a particular league. Any MLB team can beat any other MLB team in one 5 or 7 game series. Over a longer period, better teams will win more often because they are better, but the playoffs do not account for that, they are one series and done.

I am also not saying the regular season is the best way to determine either as different teams have different schedules. There is no perfect way, yet.

Thanks for letting us know about SlagginOff. Can't stand dickheads like that, with no actual knowledge of Detroit, spouting off about how it's a cesspool and how he would never deign the area with his royal presence.

I'm wearing my 2006 AL Champs ring, I'm gonna be ordering my 2012 AL Champs ring as soon as it's available, and hopefully I can add a 2012 World Series Championship ring to that. It's actually kinda great to be in Detroit now.
