We have just as many bayonets. It is standard issue for the Marine Corps (pronounced core not corpse like Obama does).

You think that we, right now, have bayonets in service equal or greater to numbers at any point in our military's history?

You're arguing Obama was right because we had more bayonets at use at some other point in our nation's military history.

OK then... have a good time with that.

Yes ... Obama actually made a completely valid point, about how modern technology is a superior substitution for WWI-era quantity.

You have no argument against that, just your usual pathetic mewlings.

I was responding to you. You came in here and claimed we have the same amount of bayonets. I asked you to clarify. If you want proof, look up.

I think you maybe have Romnesia.

None of the Pogues and Fobbits in our Base Support Battalion had them. They did issue the M9 bayonet to the Scouts and Infantry, but most guys had either an M203 grenade launcher or some geardo shiat mounted in the way of the bayonet lug.

Do we have MORE or FEWER active-duty soldiers to be issued bayonets than during, say, the height WW1?

It's almost as though there's a difference between insurgency/counterinsurgency and naval strategy.

Yeah. The Taliban doesn't exactly rule the seas.

Taking over a country is a VERY different proposition than simply not being kicked out of one.

Not since boot camp, really. There was a bayonet assault course that had us stabbing "Ivans" made out of chunks of rubber tires.

www.risawn.com

Most of our knife training was more geared around some guy coming out of a blind spot during an urban operation and knocking your rifle out of your hand, and going to your un-mounted knife (bayonet, tactical folder, or some wanna-be Ninja shiat guys were buying at the PX) as a back-up.

Thing is even when they were highly standard equipment, they weren't used much at all. I don't remember the exact figures but bayonet wounds as a percentage of total casualties at the major Civil War battles were absurdly low, like much less than 1%. Apparently when hand to hand occurred guys were far more likely to use their weapons as clubs than spears.

When I was in the Navy, I...um, I was once in this big tank where they faked water leaks in fake pipes and the water got really high. And it was COLD WATER. So I imagine that is exactly the same kind of thing.

No you rephrased the question. The time in question is 1916 as in the headline,

Your question is "You think that we, right now, have bayonets in service equal or greater to numbers at any point in our military's history?"

They are two different questions.

Do you walk to work or do you carry your lunch?

I don't care to look it up, we still use bayonets and Obama was trying to be cute and pretend we don't. The guy can't even pronounce Marine Corps. He is a buffoon.

No, you're trying to pretend he said we don't. He said we have fewer. That is true. It's also valid that we have fewer because we have other technologies.

And you're trying to 'be cute' and deflect it all by making some comment about pronunciation. Tell us a teleprompter joke now.

That would be the "PARRY, THRUST" Ivan. The giant dong is supposed to be his Kalashnikov with a fixed bayonet. It's normally up higher and blocking his squishy Goodyear torso. You have to parry his AK-74M out of the way (it's basically a giant lever on a spring) then stab him in his now-undefended guts.

They're not holding their own. They're completely routed and destroyed. They remainders are scattered into small pockets of resistance that aren't worth digging out of the terrain they're in. Like that cockroach that skitters into the wall on a work night. Not worth your time to get it out.

The face that the commander and chief cannot pronounce Corpsman corretly is indeed a joke, that the guy has the job is a joke. Unfortunately it is not a laughing matter. The fact that he did it over and over makes him look like the simpleton he is.

I'd love to keep up with this spirited and lively debate but I have a 7:05 flight. Good night.

The landed gentry will not allow our war machine to lose its edge. Trapdoor rifle production is at an all time low. This concept of "force multiplication through technology" will not stand. Our forces today would be destroyed by Japan of the 40's and their numbers. Obama is a buffoon.

That is the problem. Obama has relegated our cavalry to pack animals. Reagan personally ordered and demonstrated the last great use of the horse charge in the Afghan Soviet war, as referenced in Rambo 3.

Partial threadjack: going back to the second debate, Romney's line about you can't build coal plants in America? That pissed me off because my father actually builds coal plants here in the US. Well, he's doing so in Germany for a couple of years, but he's done plenty of work for this (PDF warning) coal plant being built in Ohio.

Read Sullivan's live blog. (pops)

Watching this man shape-shift in front of your eyes is staggering. I'm fascinated by the purity of the cynicism. Seriously, I've never seen any human being up close like this - a mechanical, unstoppable machine of say anything, forget everything in the past, refuse to take any responsibility for anything he has said in the past, and just smile and golly-gee smile his way along. There's a a machine-like quality that chills me. I have no idea what he would do in office on anything. I believe nothing he says.

It is disgusting how many lies Romney told in that debate ON HIS OWN POSITIONS. The man will say or do anything to get elected. With Bush 43, at least he pretty much stuck to his positions and did what he said he was going to do, however misguided that was.

Romney's penchant for lying suggests he's too dangerous to be allowed to take the presidency.
