PapaChester: I do believe the pledge of allegiance mentions God which means you force children to recognize a deity that they may not worship, every, f'in, day.

So much THIS!!!

These people would go full tard if anybody wanted to do away with the Pledge of Allegiance but oh lawdy if they are introduced to another culture.

The kids that were pulled out of the classes probably need the stress relief yoga provides more than anyone else with parents like this.

From TFA: In an Oct. 12 email to district Superintendent Tim Baird, Broyles called the yoga program unconstitutional and said he may take unspecified legal action unless the classes stop.

Is there a violation of state constitution or other law at work here? Certainly not a first amendment issue: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." I don't see Congress being involved, don't see a religion being established, and don't see the free exercise of religion being prohibited.

The New York Times had a pretty good article about Yoga causing serious injuries for long time practitioners. Here's a link about yoga as a modern invention if your curious.

As for those parents, they really, really need a reality check in a bad way. If a yoga class for your kids is your biggest problem your in no position to complain to anyone about anything.

Religion? That has been debunked a while ago as a largely modern invention. I'd be more worried about injury from people who don't know how to do it right.

We wouldn't want to indoctrinate children into any religion before they have formed the capacity for critical thought. That would be tantamount to abuse!

Are you referring to the fact that modern yoga was invented in California, so even from Japan's perspective, yoga is a far-eastern religion?

Not sure if this is the case here, but when I went to highschool in a  SD county school, we were required to take a PE course, but it could be sports (the standard PE), weightlifting, or arobics. If they are allowing the kids to choose to do yoga instead of weightlifting or sports as their PE, WTF is the problem?

idiots ? which group ? why is there farking yoga in a school ? we are last in math and science among industrialized nations and we have the nerve to put this shiat in school ? and what farking teaching credentials does a damn yoga instructor have ? california is pathetic.

This is an elective class. Middle schools offer electives and high schools require elective credits to graduate. Not much difference than offering something like ceramics.

/the more you know

Elective or not, it's still a bullshiat class. At least with ceramics you're learning a useful skill.

I took an actual Eastern Religions class in high school, as an elective, since Social Studies was my 'minor' at the time. It has in fact been useful, since I can read articles or have discussions about [Eastern Religions] and not sound like a bigoted fool. We also did a bit of yoga in class sometimes.

In later years (2010), when I told my doctor I couldn't afford physical therapy copays when instructed to go and see if that would help my back, she told me to get Wii Fit and do the yoga program, which I did. While it didn't help the original injury, it made my core muscles much stronger and alleviated some of the pain I'm in daily from other issues.

So, assuming someone likes to learn about things outside their norm, and wants some fitness that is really low impact, this elective would be fine.

Not sure if serious.

Managing one's body and mind is a useful life skill. I can't say I have yet encountered a situation that called for ceramics skills.

God forbid schools try to teach the kids about emotional intelligence. No, school knows there's only one type of learnin' and that's rote memorization. Did you memorize that poem about Columbus? Good. Now wait five years and then find out that everything you learned was a pack of lies carefully designed for your soft, spongy brain.

Well of course. The church tells you whether you've followed the correct formulaic behaviours, paid enough money to consider yourself sufficiently spiritual or not. Exercise and meditation merely promotes a healthy body and mind, and a healthy mind leads to independent thought.

This is a community that promotes peace/relaxation/acceptance.

And it's not a bad way to be, people. You can be much worse than being peaceful, relaxed and accepting.

Ha Ha :-)

I went to the Encinitas school district when I was a kid. They had a bilingual curriculum and were on the "cutting edge" of education. I learned how to say devil in Spanish and I thought that was the coolest thing because I was never allowed to say "devil" around my Christian conservative grandmother. I would run around her saying "Diablo! Diablo!"

Good times

WhoGAS: California has begun the shift to extreme republicanism/facism. This is not due to the fact that American's are shifting that way, but due to the overwhelming number of residents from other countries which flood into the state yearly.

California has ceased being part of this United States and is falling to China's attacks.

Move here legally, keep the same culture, vote for Chinese desires, turn the country to them. They are breeding their own to become "legal" citizens to control the vote here...who knows what happens when they spread.

They've won...get over it. America no longer exists and if you are a white male (white females are great for breeding) you are worthless now. Chinese love black guys so you're pretty safe.

Because making a big scene about 'protecting the children' from a non-existent threat makes them look like they're 'being active parents.' Who wants to be the little hellions of these morons have no discipline and take no responsibility for their actions, but Mom and Dad just point at their anti-yoga campaign as proof that they're good parents.

Not too surprising. The Southern Baptists really have a hatred calling it a corrupting influence that will turn the children in to moral less heathens.A number of Catholic dioceses, Baptists groups, Evangelical groups around the US have it as a grave threat to your soul, and so parents tend to listen to the guy who they been told to never question, or you will be doomed.

I would guess not. These are more the kind who don't want their precious snowflake subjected to anything potentially offensive or damaging. I suspect they're the kind that want both Halloween and St. Valentine's day banned, but for different reasons.
