The Bestest: punishing the division winners with such a long delay

Interesting point... hadn't thought about it that way. And I like your point re: wildcard weakening division championships.

On superficial thought, I'd like to see a three-game two-team wild-card, as baseball is about a long grind, not a single game... but you make an excellent point.

Hmmm. Thanks for making me think about my opinion: I appreciate it. What would your solution be?

Harold Reynolds on MLB Network is claiming drilling Holliday was intentional, now. The radio guys explained it as wanting a high pitch that got away from Cain (and Posey's glove location seems to support that, unless it was all a con). Perhaps we'll never know, but drilling him there makes little sense and I'd rather see it as a mistake. Maybe I'm wrong and deluded.

The Bestest: Teams are only adding 2-3 interleague games to their full schedule than present.

I'm clearly not as well informed, nor thoughtful, about it as you are (and I've had a few celebratory vodaks, so I'm not long for fark..... wheee! go Giants!), but it struck me as creating false "rivalries" that aren't, and generally creating the possibility of unbalancing schedules (that is, unless everyone plays everyone else the same number of times, strong teams that play weak teams/divisions more frequently will benefit, it seems). But, as fair background, I think inter-league play at all is stupid.*

Then again, I may be old, stodgy, and may, in fact, have a drawer full of belt-onions. ; )

/ * To be even more fair, I also think DH is stupid, but I lack the energy and focus to make that argument this evening.

Wait: Seriously, are the Cardinals biatching that Pence'shiat was illegal? Like he did it on purpose, rather than his bat exploding? Weeeeak.

Heh. Filterp0wn3d.

Biatching that Pence's bat hit the ball multiple times is -ridiculous-. And I'd argue that if it meant the Giants were warming up their hot tubs for a long winter.

Personally, I wouldn't mind a best-of-3 wild card series only if the division series was made a best-of-7 like everything else.

Also, change September callups. If you absolutely must expand the rosters to 40 in September, then a 25-man roster still has to be declared for each series (with injury exceptions).

Ooooh. Ok, I hadn't really thought about a 7-game LDS (and don't really have a problem with the 5... 5 at NLDS and 7 at NLCS is ok with me, I think... but I could almost see 3/5/7/9? Baseball, after all, is about the grind not the instant), but you have my vote.

The Bestest for Commissioner!

(That is... if you dislike November baseball as irrational as I do... shorten Spring Training, or start it earlier or something, but baseball in November seems... wrong. As much as I might root for the Giants over the Rockies, for example, a chance of snow seems... wrong.)

UNAUTHORIZED FINGER: SFSailor: xdedd: And Cain got payback on Holliday for sliding into Scutaro. Suck it Holliday!

The radio boys (who, of course, could be misleading us all) were fairly solid on the "high, inside pitch that got away from him" read on that, not intentional-drilling... I hope that's the case, frankly.

Yeah, I saw you take the high road in another thread. You're a better man than I, SFSailor. I'd have liked to have seen him stick it in his ear. And I'm the worse for that.

I was actually hoping he'd throw right at his knee, simply terrible of me.

Also...

'Cain said he won't be timid about throwing inside to Holliday, but only as part of plan to get him out. "If one gets away, one gets away."

Actually, balancing the schedule is the whole idea behind the move.
Right now with a 6 team NL Central and 4 team AL West, there's all sorts of nuttiness. Plus you had the "unfair" aspects of, for example, the Yankees and Mets guaranteed 6 games against each other every year regardless of what the rotation of other interleague games were (like, the Yankees would play the Mets for 6 games every year, but only play the Braves every other year). The new schedule is meant to make opponent distribution more even all around.
Now, is the new schedule perfect? Not in the slightest. For one thing, the Yankees-Mets thing (and other scenarios like it, like White Sox-Cubs, etc) is still there, but this has been reduced to 4 games a year (2 and 2), and overall it's a step in the right direction.

Wait: Seriously, are the Cardinals biatching that Pence'shiat was illegal? Like he did it on purpose, rather than his bat exploding? Weeeeak.

Oh is THAT what McCarver was going on about? I thought he had just wandered off into another senile non sequitur.

How does a ball hit a bat multiple times?

I am *well* aware that it is selective perception on my part, but I heard that interview and really bought it as honest: "I'm'a pitch inside, and if I lose one too far inside and it hits someone, so be it" rather than "I'm'a drill someone, but I'll claim I missed too far inside." I know the national media (Schilling, iirc, in particular) took it as "he's full of crap and gonna drill him" but I don't t think that was the intent.

More generally, I'm glad I'm not a Cards fan: I think there was a decision or two per game that I'd second-guess Matheny over... and I like Matheny. Better luck next year, sir.

I'm just glad it's not Nats v. Yanks. I'll take all the not-empty-winter-wilderness I can get!

I feel a bit better, and thank you. Clearly, I need to do a bit more reading/research and less "wait? what? there's more AL/NL games? That's retarded?!" knee-jerk drunk opinion forming. ; ) Thanks.

Marine1: How does a ball hit a bat multiple times?

Seriously, that's what they're whining about. If you look at the super slow-mo replay, you'll see that the bat breaks and the ball hits it several times -- once at the hit, then gently once or twice more after the bat explodes -- while the bat is "not in separate pieces" or whatever the fark the MLB Network guy just said while claiming it should be illegal.

The interesting / impressive thing to me was this: Kozma broke in one direction based on the initial contact -- that's -incredible- to me -- they're making decisions / reactions based on the very first crack of the bat... but the bat broke and the ball hit it 2-3 times as it left (at a zillion frames per second) and changed the flight of the ball.

I'd like to think that I wouldn't be biatching about this if the roles were reversed, but I can't know that without an Alternate Universe Machine, of course.

While I am resigned to inter-league play and actually have no problem with the idea of wild card spots, I do think that the inter-league play EVERY DAY OF THE REGULAR SEASON will cause problems, particularly toward the end of the season when pennant races are very real events. The fact that the Giants will be playing the Yankees in a three game series September 20-22 seems even more random and poorly timed than the current mid-season match-ups. I don't like the expansion of inter-league play.

Watching MLBN... yeah, I'll give you that the Tigers are scary, but I'm not sure Bochy is a rook compared to Leland.

I just hope it's a clean, tough-fought series played between honorable, sportsmanlike competitors.

Go Giants!

Also, for the record: I'm glad the score was so unbalanced -- if I were a Cards fan, I'd be mad about the rain and the condition of the field at the end. It's easy to say, now, that they have no reason to complain, but if it were a closer game, I wouldn't have wanted the Giants to win that way.

That said, the complaining about the Pence hit is *ridiculous*.

Seriously, Berkman / Reynolds / etc, stfu. If it weren't for $200,000 cameras, you'd have no idea that was a multiple-contact hit on the bat. Criminey.

No... MLB Network keeps showing Lance Berkman whining like a biatch about the Pence hit and others moaning about the game, and MLBnetwork keeps touching on it, but it's nothing more than end-of-season, we-lost flailing, it seems.

/ off to find the bottom of the vodak bottle - go Giants, and thanks Cards for a great series -- you have nothing (other than the iffy Holliday slide) to wonder about, other than heading into winter!
