The Black Dahlia: My ex lived in this building, and the apartments are all four bedroom suites with a huge living room and kitchen in the middle. The residents are all FSU and FAMU students, parties this size are actually are pretty regular occurrence in the complex.

Sounds the repeated overloading of the structure finally caught up to the residents.

Xai : if the floor is rated to hold 40lbs per square foot, and there are 2200 square feet, given 100 people that means each person at that party weighed, on average, 880lbs.

Assuming that people were evenly spread out.

Now, if it were 100 people in a 20x20 living room (4 square feet per person), you're talking about 400 square feet * 40 pounds = 16,000 pounds / 100 people = 160 per person.

Now, if it were 100 people in a 10x20 living room (2 square feet per person, hey is that your elbow?), you're talking about 200 square feet * 40 pounds = 8,000 pounds / 100 people = 80 per person.

Meh, a lot of these cheap-ass apartments are "rated" for 1000 psi or whatever which means that's the total rating of the floor: the actual weight of the material, plus the weight of whatever is actually above the floor (the walls, ceilings, etc) plus whatever is added after the building is built (carpeting, insulation, wiring) and IF there's any weight left over the tenants might be able to move in some furniture and possibly even walk around their apartments. Oh sure, it's "rated" at 2200 pounds per square foot, but no genuinely rated floor for that poundage should creak like some of the buildings I've lived in have creaked.

Throw in some Florida-style fatties hopping and dancing, and there is no way they'd survive more than one or two parties.

Sounds like the structure (and building code) was poorly designed for the expected usage.

It's not clear exactly how this was all setup, but in my experience, it's better to defer to the article itself than to a caption.

It was the penthouse, which just means it was at the top of the complex (and generally means that it's larger than a regular apartment).

It could very well be intended for 11 people if we're talking about a small apartment building.

Why does a picture caption say this?

The penthouse was in the clubhouse? If so, should be sturdier than apts. (Basing this on midwest trailer park relatives and their tornado shelter/clubhouse).

perhaps they mean the penthouse collapsed down into the clubhouse below. and if the clubhouse was a wide open hall type of area, the penthouse above was supported from side angle beams. also, a structure that is built specifically to safely contain people under tornado conditions is probably built to a higher grade specification than other dwellings.
