Dude stayed in Poland? Interesting.

And he wasn't even Jewish.

They had to use two plots for the burial. One for his body and the other for his gigantic brass ones.

Not to be 'that guy', but surviving doesn't make you a hero or courageous. It makes you lucky. And I think most survivors would be the first to admit it.

Not to be 'that girl', but he was a hero. FTFA: The oldest known survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp - a teacher who gave lessons in defiance of his native Poland's Nazi occupiers - has died at the age of 108, an official said Monday.

108.

Not even counting the number of years he lost while captured, that's a lot of innings.

Yeah, I wasn't really specifically referring to the fact that he lived this long as much as the fact that he put his life on the line in order to continue educating children. I have a special place in my heart for educators and especially for those that think it's important enough to do it as a "fark you" in the face of oppression. It's just a bonus that he still managed to survive this long and a nice big spierdalaj to any Nazi sympathizers that he did it while keeping his happy ass in Poland and continuing to teach afterwards.

You are both right, I overlooked that. Apologies to Mr. Dobrowolski.

I am so very rarely correct on fark, so I appreciate the opportunity, good sir.

I loathe the day when there will be no survivors left, those who seek to discredit the loss of 12 million for personal gains are at the edges biting at the chomp

It's why recording the stories from people such as Mr. Dobrowolski is so important.
I think the work of Spielberg's Shoah foundation in collecting the stories of survivors of the Nazi's and Rwanda is so important in the fight for never again

Great, so does this mean we can stop punishing the Palestinians for the holocaust now?

outliving his attempted murderer

According to Wikipedia neither Germany nor Poland follows the "year and a day" rule. If they can tie his death to health problems caused in the camps they could upgrade the charges to actual murder.

Man, I'm not proud of this or anything, but there is no way I'd have gone against the Nazis on that one. Even given the fact that people really didn't know what was going on in the camps. I'm a huge chicken. Dude's a hero for sure.

Good luck proving a 108 year-old lead an unnaturally shortened lift span. He's only about 28 years beyond his peer group, and that's not counting the general effects of famine on wartime Poland.

Elegy: Great, so does this mean we can stop punishing the Palestinians for the holocaust now?

There were more Jewish Arab/Persian refugees than Palestinian Muslims/Christians, somehow in 2012 there are no more Jewish refugees, funny how that happens Link

Israel would have happened in some way shape or form if there hadn't been the holocaust and the first Palestinian/Jewish clash was in 1929

Also, it's not like Arafat's Uncle Grand Mufti of Jerusalem al-Husseini hadn't backed the Nazis/Holocaust which backfired with the British responding by throwing more support behind Jewish militantsLink

Also up until the 1970's the Arab world espoused a view of Pan-Arabism the Palestinians were not seen as a separate entity culturally and socially until doing so benefited the Arab world in creating an other/enemy in the Jewish state/people. This also resulted in Jews losing their identities in the Arab world as Arabs.

Either restitution for all (Jews and Palestinian) or no justice at all

The man wasn't Jewish. This has nothing to do with Jews, Israel, Palestine. Don't let that stop your knee-jerk "Jews! Jews! JEWS!" finger-pointing bullshiat, though. I'd hate to let something like 'facts' get in the way of your boring Judenhaas.

To be fair the 12,000,000 number is the all-inclusive one that includes POWs. The number has always been a point of pedantry. The danger is those who claim the whole thing never happened at all.

Wanna know what it actually took to survive in Auschwitz? Read this book: Survival in Auschwitz

Luck was a factor, not the main factor. It was mostly will power that got someone through that experience.

No, it really wasn't. The idea that "willpower" decided whether you were shoveled directly from the train to a gas chamber is ridiculous.

Not that I think Israel is always right (far from it), but why does the Israeli-Palestinian conflict get so much more coverage and angst, especially in the West, compared to say, Russians in Chechnya, or the Chinese in Tibet?

The problem with being the "oldest" at anything is, once you've passed, there's always a replacement waiting in the wings.

Were there no babies rescued from Auschwitz? A good friend of mine was rescued (at the age of ~2 weeks) from Dachau. He was adopted by one of the soldiers who liberated the camp.

Well, if there were, they sure wouldn't be the oldest survivors. They would be the opposite.

I guess I don't care as much about foreign dead.

On Average 6600 American service men died per month, during WWII (about 220 a day).

Almost 1,000 Army planes disappeared en route from the US to foreign climes. But 43,581 aircraft were lost overseas including 22,948 on combat missions (18,418 against the Western Axis) and 20,633 attributed to non-combat causes overseas.
In August 1943, 60 B-17s were shot down among 376 losses. That was a 16 percent loss rate and meant 600 empty bunks in England. In 1942-43 it was statistically impossible for bomber crews to complete a 25-mission tour in Europe.
By the end of the war, over 40,000 airmen were killed in combat theatres and another 18,000 wounded. Some 12,000 missing men were declared dead, including a number "liberated" by the Soviets but never returned. More than 41,000 were captured, half of the 5,400 held by the Japanese died in captivity, compared with one-tenth in German hands. Total combat casualties were pegged at 121,867.

Saudi-Irania? No, that's not it. I'll probably remember it in the shower tomorrow morning.

I hope you realize this is a very LOW figure for World War II. The USSR lost about 210,000 per month (7,000 a day).

Because of US ties to Israel and the West's hand in its founding.

The Soviets lost 23,400,000 in WW2. More than half were civilians lost to military action and crimes against humanity.

Little known fact is that the chinese lost 20,000,000. 80% were civilians.

Heh...I was going to say "What's 6000 to the Soviets? A day, maybe?"

I have nothing but respect for our WWII vets, but the Soviets defeated Germany, or by far largest part of Germany's defeat was due to the Soviets.
Much like the USA with Japan

Because a handful of tragic anecdotes is the same thing as an alleged conspiracy to murder 6 million people that has little physical evidence for it, and an implausibly high 'surviving' Zionist population afterwards.
