But I still wonder about something: What the heck was KISS as popular as it was?! I grew up during their heyday and thought they were lame, still do. But other kids I knew thought KISS was the best thing ever! AND it seemed there was no middle either loved them or thought they sucked.

Just so you know, you are not imagining things KISS really really sucks... 

They are not good all. The people on the other end of the spectrum are in denial due to very effective marketing.

I remember watching the Wizard of Oz on TV when I was in my early teens and thinking that Margaret Hamilton had a great ass.
