And, of course, the speakers on my work computer totally suck. Guess I'll have to wait until I get home to enjoy the splendor of this. I'm pretty sure I even remember watching this when it was on TV back then, too!

Thanks!

Wow I had totally erased this from my memory but now that I saw it again I remember how every boy in the sixth grade was excited to watch a Halloween special starring this mincing gay man because of the fact that KISS was performing.

After watching some of the clips I am struck by the thought of how much coke TV executives got away with doing back then

It's been out on DVD for a few years.

IIRC, this special led to the cinematic masterpiece,

That was the gayest thing I've seen today. And I LOVED it!

It would be much simpler to list the names of all the drugs that were NOT used during filming.

"Featuring Florence Henderson, KISS, Betty White, Donnie & Marie, and Pinky Tuscadero"

This exact guest list could be put on network tv tonight and draw decent ratings. Only Pinky isn't enjoying the nostalgia kick (because she's busy shooting at the neighbors.

I remember watching the Wizard of Oz on TV when I was in my early teens and thinking that Margaret Hamilton had a great ass.

Paul Lynde was a delight. About the only thing I like about being old is that I can remember watching him as center square on Hollywood Squares. I was far too young to get the dirty side of the jokes - the guy just made me laugh because he was.. he.. he's Paul farkin' Lynde. And Uncle Arthur was my favorite visitor on Bewitched.

Cool find, subby!

But I still wonder about something: What the heck was KISS as popular as it was?! I grew up during their heyday and thought they were lame, still do. But other kids I knew thought KISS was the best thing ever! AND it seemed there was no middle ground...you either loved them or thought they sucked.

Or thought they were Knights In Satan's Service and would lead to demonic possession. People were serious about this. Yeah, a shiatty rock band with makeup is going to fill you with demons, little boy.

Watching this destroyed my foggy impression of when I saw it originally. KISS lipsynching their way so incredibly poorly through Detroit Rock City is something I remember differently. And I don't think there's anything much gayer than that sparkly trucker number at the 24 minute mark.

That said, Paul Lynde is hilarious.

Just so you know, you are not imagining things KISS really really sucks...

They are not good ...at all. The people on the other end of the spectrum are in denial due to very effective marketing.

Well, you sure told me! ;)

But jus' so you know---I was one of those kids into Classical music* and such; never cared for pop music in my life until my 30's, believe it or don't.

* I blame it on reading too many Charlie Brown paperbacks (remember them?) on my down time. After band practice, of course.

Contestant: I'll take Paul Lynde for the block.

Peter Marshall: Paul, you're driving down Hollywood Freeway going 55 Miles Per Hour and your
Brakes go out, what should you do?

Paul: Honk if you love Jesus!!!

And Gene hasn't pantomimed a performance like that since.....since this.

Getting beat up for appreciating "classical" is wrong.

Getting beat up for liking Disco is right.

//thanks subby I had forgotten it.

Thanks very much, Subby, for locating this-and to the mods for saying "yes." I have the vaguest memories of having seen some of it back at the time--oh my, how wacky it looks at 36 years' distance. I've gotta believe that a lot of late-70s TV was filmed "under the influence" of something or other. (Match Game comes immediately to mind.)

Yes, unyon, the 24:00 number does indeed look gayer than any French horn, anywhere.

When some archaeologist finds this years from now, I wonder what they'll conclude about the mid-late 1970s....

/off to share the link with some other antique Americans

Saw it live on tape back in the day. KISS live on TV was a BFD. I thought they were so cool...of course, I was 7.

Holy shiat. I have about 600 channels and no where could I find anything even half as mindblowing as this. Thank you subby. Every thought I have about this has already been mentioned:

1) copious amounts of drugs were in play during the creating, writing, & filming,
2) I'd watch this if it was re-done today with the same people. As long as they're still alive. Hell, even bring in the rotting, gay corpse of Paul Lynde
3) Anything from HR Puffinstuff is better than anything anyone today could come up with........even under the influence of bath salts

I find it rather fascinating that he mentions an election is coming up. Odd how things work.

I was a Black Sabbath kid by the way...

Then I grew up and realized that Ozzy is a flipping horrible singer... still like most of the music.

The stuff we watch today will be as inexplicable 30 years from now as this is today. How are you going to explain Honey Boo-Boo and Dancing With the Stars to your grandchildren?

He was pretty good in this.

Of course, it's easy since the character he played was completely based on him.

True, but no one knows who the fark Roz Kelly is.
