(Yahoo)   Hey, remember the bad old days of "yellow journalism" when ultra-rich robber barons owned almost all the newspapers and openly slanted the news to advance their ideological agendas? Good thing those days are long gone and never coming back right?   (news.yahoo.com) divider line 114

birchman: OscarTamerz: And thankfully there's no left wing bias working to distort the facts in the main stream media or in the presidential debates.

[www.globalpost.com image 360x240]

What facts did she distort? Unless you're going to try to convince me that "act of terror" does not mean "terrorism", in which case go put Rush's balls back in your mouth.

She miraculously called "time" when Mitt was going to destroy Obama on at least 2 retorts, and everybody was waiting for it.

She spouted about how Mitt and Paul Ryan were the devil's rejects essentially...that's hardly bi-partisan enough to warrant moderating a presidential debate.

Vodka Zombie: I don't think it ever went away, Subby.

Came here to say this, the news has always been slanted, there were just fewer ways to catch their lies before.

Conservatives: Obama has accomplished nothing these past four years, but given another four years he'll destroy America.

Because these, and another ten thousand outlets are all hide bound conservative news venues, owned by gazillionaires bent on securing a religious dictatorship which will outlaw San Francisco park nuidity and free Sandra Fluk contraception aids.

Pete_T_Mann: randomjsa: You were doing so very well there right up until that point, then it was just a face palm moment.

Thats funny, I had a facepalm with a head shake when I read your comment.

If NPR is biased, please provide evidence of this, I'd like to see it. Real evidence, please. Fringe right wing websites that believe Obama is a secret muslim with no birth certificate don't count.

Don't hold your breath.

I'd go back to the days of yellow journalism if it meant we got Thomas Nash cartoons again.

Ryker's Peninsula: ProfessorOhki: What's a newspaper?

Newspapers are actually very amazing and versatile! You can line your birdcage or catbox with them, use them to stop the paint drippings from getting on the floor of your garage, stuff them inside wet sneakers to dry them out, they make starting fires very easy, people used to wrap fish in them for storing in the fridge, homeless people stuff them into their clothes for insulation, they soak up spills easily and make good tablecloths for those messy meals, and you can whack your dog or kid pretty good if you roll them up tight and it won't leave a mark.

The comics aren't funny, the headline news is old, and if you like sports you already know the scores.
But the crossword puzzles and sudoku can be a good time waster.

I can make a hat or a brooch or a pterodactyl !!!

Baryogenesis: grimlock1972: when i read a news article i tend to filter out the slant and take in the few facts that remain.

There are easier ways to find out today's date.

John Swinton on the "free press":

"There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it.

"There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone.

"The business of the journalists is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press?

"We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes."

You mean the days when six corporations own almost all media, 90% of it with a left-leaning bias?

Yep.

Freudian_slipknot: Not sure when the whole myth of "objective journalism" started.

Sure, individual journalists can choose to subscribe to some kind of ethics, but it's not as though there are any laws that regulate journalism.

And the news media is a business. Plain and simple. If objective coverage sells, that's what you'll get. If setting puppies on fire would give them more business that's what they'll do.

Came to put in my 2 cents but I can't really beat that. If you're just getting scared now you'd better be wearing life jacket because the decks awash and the last life boat already sailed..
