dickfreckle: Subby, put down the tinfoil hat. There's nothing here to suggest a nefarious plot to disenfranchise voters. The post office is merely charging more because the mailer is larger than a standard letter.

Yes, the GOP has done a ton of sh*t to screw with the vote, but this isn't one of them.

It's not the post office that's disenfranchising voters. The USPS takes their job seriously.

Requires More Postage This Year

Because of the size of the 2012 mailer, the

Want to know how big this conspiracy is? It's John Husted. The same guy who tried to allow family members of soldiers to vote early but not anyone else. The one that bought the machines that are now suspect.

That certainly is an impossible conspiracy. How could that guy keep such a thing secret, outside of all of the major papers and the courts, of course.

markie_farkie: until at some point the entire thing blows up spectacularly in their faces.

I think we're already seeing this with the voter ID debacles. It's actually not hard to design a voter photo ID system that's entirely constitutional and presents no real additional difficulty to the voters. Just make them free (in many states, state IDs are already free for low-income citizens), make sure you advertise the change and allow plenty of time before an election (a year or so) before the law takes effect, etc.

But the GOP efforts have been so blatantly unfair and discriminatory that deeply conservative judges have been telling them to go to hell as often or more often than the left-wingers. The party has almost burned its bridges with it's own section of the judiciary on this one.

It's not an age thing. I could rattle off the names of quite a few of friends my age who vote straight Republican.

Education is the only way to defeat the malicious and stupid.

Public education and teachers are being constantly attacked, college tuition is going through the roof, misinformation is running rampant in American news and mankind's greatest tool (the Internet) is coming under fire more and more. This is a coordinated attack on education in this country.

1) The postal service is delivering them anyways.
2) This wasn't that deliberate, there is just a lot of stuff to vote for.
3) New idea for voter disenfranchisement. Just load the ballot up with BS so they get dropped in the Return to Sender bin.

Problem: Absentee voters are voting for Obama
Absentee voters are, in fact, voting for Obama. Obama might even be winning so far, I don't really know. Doesn't matter - Absentee voters are voting for Obama and it's certainly a problem to someone.

I like it as an example of that "True but false" fact-check that conservatives love to gnash their teeth over when the English language proves to be untidy.

Welcome to Fark, where inflammatory headlines in the politics tab are half the fun.

Solution: Raise postage on Absentee ballots and not tell anyone
FTA: Requires More Postage This Year

Because of the size of the 2012 mailer, the Hamilton County Board of Elections in Ohio say you should put 65 cents worth of postage on most absentee ballots, about 20 cents more than the standard Forever Stamp.

Making it more confusing: each county has a different absentee ballot. In a few counties, including Warren County, the required postage can be even higher. In Clermont County, which has a thinner ballot, a single stamp may be fine.

Fark: USPS sends them anyways
FTA: The U.S. Postal Service reports that many voters are forgetting to put additional postage on their mailer.

It says it is still forwarding them to the local board of elections, as returning the envelope to the sender would take weeks.

To be fair, voters have been stupid forever, and we've just designed the system around it (electoral college to balance the influence based on actual concentrations of political acumen rather than sheer population, which only accumulates more idiocy, for instance) and moved on.

This isn't a real problem for democracy any more than the Idiocracy theory of genetics is a real problem for the human IQ (poor/stupid people have been having more children since the dawn of time and it has yet to slow the technological or scientific progress of humanity).

Because all the state and local stuff is also on the ballots, and depending on schedules and competition, two nearby areas could have very different ballot size.

Standard in my state is the instructions tell you to look for the ink stamp on the instruction page that shows correct postage.

Soup4Bonnie: Wth is a Forever stamp?

It's an unsecured promissory note redeemable for one ounce worth of postage from the USPS even if the rate changes.

Comparing CPI and postage rates... That 2 cent stamp from 1919 would be 27 cents today. That 10 cent stamp from 1974 would be 47 cents today. That quarter stamp from 1988 would be 49 cents today. But now the stamps don't get priced, so you can buy a bunch before a price change and make a small gain, but historically it's not a great investment.

Oh, and the value of money has fallen by half since the end of the Reagan administration.

They USPS probably saves money with the forever stamp by not having to print a bunch of 1 or 2 cent stamps every time there's an increase so customers can match them with their extras at the lower price.

So can I, and its pretty obvious that he means is there any direct evidence that raising the postage was in reaction to Obama getting votes. And while I highly doubt there is anything hard, IIRC the elections board in ohio is Republican controlled and has been doing some shady shiat this season, so i can see where people would make this connection. Of course, even if that were true, it still wouldn't be a reaction to them seeing Obama getting votes, but could still have been done as a preemptive measure, and really what would the difference be.

Solution:

Ditch the machines, let everyone vote absentee, and put a BRE on it. The savings from not having the machines will pay for the postage costs.

Bloody William: Why the fark are ballots not postage-paid?

Because a party (that shant be named) is losing in all the growing demographics, so their best route to victory is disenfranchisement.

/read my ballot instructions carefully
//enclosed copy of id outside of ballot secrecy envelope, inside green envelope
///two stamps
////four slashies.

Ok, so the ballot is bigger and therefore requires more postage. That stinks.
USPS is sending even if people don't put on the extra postage. Great, that's nice of them.

Giant Leap....

ZOMG Conservative conspiracy. Yeah, that's logical.
