We're trying to make it harder for people to vote, not easier. Get with the program.

Yeah, I could see how a group busy saving 70(?) years of pensions right now might not want Mitt Romney running the show.

You'd think that the 14th amendment would require it.

for the same reason election day isn't a national holiday (or moved to a sunday). republicans want fewer people to vote.

My wife and I were stunned by that when hers came in the mail. You have to actually read it carefully to notice that you need 2 stamps to send it.

FlashHarry: republicans want fewer people to vote.

As more and more of the GOP base die off, and the party slides inevitably toward increasing irrelevance, and impotence in their party's ability to gerrymander and disenfranchise in order to win, their tactics will only become more outlandish until at some point the entire thing blows up spectacularly in their faces.

Nope. If we don't look at this as the perfect evidence of how much reform we need, we're boned.

Mine came with instructions on how much postage to put on it, it wasn't confusing.

People in Ohio vote by mail to stand in line? How antiquated? They might as well send smoke signals.

Here in Texas we have early voting. You get a whole week to just show up whenever's convenient to you. I'll be heading out on Wednesday to support my favorite of two evils and let my opinion that doesn't matter anyhow be heard.

I voted by mail. The ballot came with an envelope with prepaid postage. Been that way for every election I've voted by mail, here. It is nice to sit down and think things over, do some homework, then stick it in the mail and be done with it. Easy.

That is a good point. I usually write down all the issues and who I'm picking, then I invariably realize I left the sheet of paper at home, after it's too late. So vote by mail is an elegant solution to that problem.

I'm sure this will be presented as a reason why we need to privatize the Postal Service, because UPS or FedEx really want to have to staff an office in Moose Pass, Alaska and will happily take a letter mailed from there to Pharr, Texas for fifty cents or so.

I would have thought that too, but it is technically a convenience.

Now, if someone is abroad for work, or in the military on the other side of the planet... I would hope those are postage-paid.

Subby, put down the tinfoil hat. There's nothing here to suggest a nefarious plot to disenfranchise voters. The post office is merely charging more because the mailer is larger than a standard letter.

Yes, the GOP has done a ton of sh*t to screw with the vote, but this isn't one of them.

As more and more Republicans die off, more and more 30 and 40 year old white males will take their place. I see it happening.

Paul Ryan, the face of the future Republican party.

The Reagan Youth of the 80s, sheltered suburban white punks who think the world owes them, are now turning 40-50. Republicans for life. If they weren't already.

I am constantly trying to convince myself that this is all just a figment of my imagination, that republicans aren't actually trying to suppress votes. Then I look at the Fark ad for Mitt Romney--I immediately think about what this guy would do to get elected. He's slimy, but he's far from the slimiest within the party.

So I believe it now.

Because of the size of the 2012 mailer, the Hamilton County Board of Elections in Ohio say you should put 65 cents worth of postage on most absentee ballots, about 20 cents more than the standard Forever Stamp.

great, now the weight of the ballots is going to become a partisan issue.

===================================================================== = =================

Um, Ohio has been early voting for over 2 weeks now. Republicans want to abolish it, and did pass a law overturning it, but thankfully the supreme court (ohio supreme court I think) told them to shove it.

But as I'd rather not have to drive downtown to the board of elections to vote, I'll just vote absentee.

/When I voted absentee in Pennsylvania, you're required to go to a post office and the result was EXACTLY $1.00 in postage.

It's not an age thing. I could rattle off the names of quite a few of friends my age who vote straight Republican.

Education is the only way to defeat the malicious and stupid.

Public education and teachers are being constantly attacked, college tuition is going through the roof, misinformation is running rampant in American news and mankind's greatest tool (the Internet) is coming under fire more and more. This is a coordinated attack on education in this country.

No. At least in Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) where I am registered, you have three options:

1. Show up at your polling place on election day, like normal;

2. Request, receive, fill out, and mail back in an absentee ballot (they've even done away with the requirement that you have to actually be absent, IIRC); or

3. Drive down to the county board of elections office during business hours staring October 2nd and on the Saturday and Sunday right before the election and early-vote in person.

There is probably some variation from county to county on the exact hours, locations, and forms, but I wouldn't imagine that it's all that great seeing as the basic rules come from Columbus.

Because the Republicans are trying to steal Ohio. Apparently the voting machines being supplied to Ohio are from a company that the Romney family is heavily invested in. They also have huge security flaws and the ballots are going to be easily destroyed.

No wonder Congress has been trying to strangle them and sell off the usable organs at every turn.

And don't forget, military & overseas ballots are postage-paid, so better add expats and soldiers on deployment to the LOPCATGOPATA, too.

List Of People Conspiring Against The GOP And Therefore America. I forget who the caretaker is, but anyone will tell you that virtually everyone and everything not hard to the right is on there. Hell, I'm probably in there, somewhere.
