Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mindbogglingly useful could evolve purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as a final and clinching proof of the non-existence of God. The argument goes something like this:
"I refuse to prove that I exist," says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."
"But," says Man, "the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED."
"Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.
"Oh, that was easy," says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white, and gets killed on the next zebra crossing.

Most leading theologians claim that this argument is a load of dingo's kidneys. But this did not stop Oolon Colluphid making a small fortune when he used it as the central theme for his best selling book, Well That About Wraps It Up for God. Meanwhile the poor Babel fish, by effectively removing all barriers to communication between different cultures and races, has caused more and bloodier wars than anything else in the history of creation.

I work translator. So, I get kick out of these contests. Some, you know what you are doing is sound good. But believe me .... You do not want. You do not want to look smart, they do not really know what you are doing, I think. It is a lot of information to be transferred. If you do not know about the subject .... You do not like the sound. Some people believe everything they hear because Farkers.

I was just a kid when that came out but even I knew that was a cheap digital watch circuit board. All that hype about the computer graphics (I don't think the term CGI had been coined yet) and they used the guts of a cheap watch for a key practical prop. :P I wonder if they lost the prop and someone said, "Bob, give me your watch and some gum!"

Google Voice's ability to transcribe voice mails makes huge mistakes.
Google Translate is horrible at translating between English and Japanese.

We are supposed to trust NttDocomo has come up with something that does both of the above, and does it better than anything I've ever used before?

why not just have everyone speak english. You want our money, learn to speak our language frenchie!

2012-10-22 05:58:08 PM
The problem with the whole "everyone should just speak English" argument is that nobody on this planet wants to learn a new language. The non-english speakers don't want to learn our insane tongue, just like we wouldn't want to learn French or Chinese if it was decided that one of those was to be the new "Global Language".

Universal translators are our best bet. I'd LOVE for it to be like it is in Star Trek (the TNG era shows, anyway), where the universal translation works so effectively that its incredibly plausible that all the characters you loved didn't actually speak a lick of english, but the translation was so transparent that it didn't matter.

Of course, that breaks down every other week when the Enterprise is struck with a massive loss of power, but not so massive as to knock out the universal translator or the gravity generator.

/yikes, got into a rant there

Why does Japan always make its pictures of Japanese people look white? Is this just a bias of mine, that I see that woman as Whitebread McMayonnaise? Do Japanese people actually identify her picture as looking Japanese?

It's not just this picture. Almost any illustration of Japanese origin that depicts a person, looks like a white person to me.

Japanese people are not "Yellow", they are usually more of a pale pinkish white color unless they have a tan (most burn pretty easily so you don't see a lot of tanned Japanese people). The hair color is off but nowadays dyed hair is quite common on Japanese women.

/knows quite a few Japanese people

When I say "looks white", I mean more than just skin color. Japanese people naturally have black hair for the most part. Most illustrations, like this one, depict some other color. Japanese people don't have round eyes. Illustrations do. If there's enough detail, facial bone structure and physical build also tend to suggest caucasian.

It's incredibly common in Japanese depictions. They have a certain amount of it in a lot of anime, advertisements, and culture in general. You'll notice a fondness in particular for blonds, the heroes and heroines of most drawn stories seem white too.

I've yet to bring it up with actual Japanese people, but I can't fathom they actually think most of these depictions are showing "themselves" as it were.

As I mentioned about their advertising campaigns:
i.ytimg.com

Does that really look like a Japanese person to you? They have a similar male as well later in that campaign, also white. It isn't just American companies, though, many well known actors and actresses from the US have been paid significant sums to do adverts over there by Japanese companies.
