"I've been stuck with that," said Munz. "But then, how come they cannot take her permanent citizen status away?"

Good question. There could be a case for he obtaining the citizenship fraudulently. There's also a disconnect between the Province and Fed on this as one oversees social services and the other immigration.

A whirlwind courtship eh? I guess it sometimes does make a little whooshing sound if you swipe your Amex hard enough.

The US does something similar. They need to hurry up and make all permanent residency/green cards obtained through marriage conditional.

We do this in the US. When your immigrant spouse gets her green card, you, as the sponsor, are financially responsible for her forever even if she bangs the entire Denver Broncos football team and runs off with Peyton Manning. It's in very clear English on damn near every form you sign.

They've kind of done that, too. The initial green card is has to be re-applied for two years after it is issued.

Yep, just went through this with my wife. Another $485 processing fee. After the initial ~$3000 in fees when she first came over 2 years ago.

Here is a simple rule to follow. If they aren't a legal resident, you just don't marry them*.

*unless you have known them for several (4+) years and you import them directly. Then if all they are interested in is citizenship/residency, they will find another fish to bite.

But you still have a 50/50 chance of getting the shaft due to general communication surprise and gotchas.

Public service announcement. In Chinese cultures the man pays for the dowry, wedding and honeymoon.

So did I, although we just got her initial green card. She's completely OCD about that kind of stuff, though, so we have the re-apply date scheduled on the calendar. I just tell her it's one more opportunity to send her back. :)

The best way to marry a foreigner is to find one here already on some other kind of visa. I know a couple of whiny Finn women that are doing their very best to stay here on their student visas if anyone is interested.

They're OK to look at until they speak.

Even fewer when you consider that Chinese men have literally driven a few species to extinction in an effort to harvest animal parts that enable them to bear boning Chinese women.

You sign an undertaking committing to this when you sponsor someone for immigration. It's a major part of the application and it's quite clear. This is not some fine-print legal shenanigan.

My CSB:

Worked with a guy who 'met' his Chinese bride on the interwebs, went over there, brought her back, however that all worked out, and was shocked, SHOCKED I tell you that he could not get a government security clearance that was required for the job. Apparently being married to a foreign national that still have family in a country that just loves to copy our shiat is a disqualifier. Go figure.

Come on!

He's 82 years old.

Give the man a break.

He should only have to pay for two days of welfare. She should be responsible for the rest.

It's a disqualifier even if it's from a friendly country. When I was in the Navy I had to report up through a PN (Personellman, Navyspeak for HR) that was just a complete unmitigated biatch. She hated my ass for some reason. Anyway, turns out that she was a Cryptographic tech (requires TS clearance) that married a Scottish dude. She lost her clearance and as a result, her rate. Which is why she was so mad all the time.

Even if you're married to 1st gen Americans it can be an issue. I have another friend (JAG officer) who's clearance was complicated by the fact that his wife, while born in Los Angeles to a career Navy family, had parents that were born and raised in the PI.

I almost did a foreign gal a favor like that one time... That is, until i read the fine print, that if she declares for welfare it would be deducted from my wages.... I told her sorry, but no. She could have the best intentions in the world, but i ain't going out like that if things went south.

It really depends on the case for security clearances. My wife is Canadian and i had no problem getting a TS SCI clearance. I'm convinced it comes down to whoever is evaluating your file.

Im talking about cutting federal funding to sanctuary cities that refuse to enforce federal immigration law. They spent millions suing Arizona for trying to enforce immigration and ignore those cities and states that do not, just pathetic.

Cities have no jurisdiction to enforce federal immigration law. That's what the feds do. We're talking about legal immigrants in any case. You know, the ones that went through the system like all the right wing blowhards insist they want them to do?

In Canada, permanent citizenship means permanent. What part of PER-MA-NENT CITIZENSHIP do you not understand?

You can run, but you can't hide. We're like the Hotel California without the good room service. You can check out but you can never leave.

Just casually passing through Canada is grounds for including you in a list of Great Canadians, like Frank Gehry, Boris Karloff, Mary Pickford, Jim Cary, Bill Shatner, Saul Bellow, Keiffer Sutherland, Carol Ann Shields, etc., etc., and so on and so forth, ad nauseam.

You are a Canadian if you:

1) were born in Canada
2) moved to Canada
3) lived in Canada temporarily between your homeland and your destination in the USA;
4) lived in Canada temporarily and became a world success;
5) became a world success;
6) won a medal at the Olympics without subsequently being disqualified for cheating or drug use or both; or
7) ever acquired Canadian citizenship, except, of course, by winning it in a card game. This includes accidental citizenship.

You are also an honorary Canadian if:

1) one or more parents were born in Canada;
2) you ever worked in Canada;
3) an ancestor was briefly Canadian or you married a Canadian;
4) Canadians have embraced you because of your hockey-playing, curling or beer-drinking skills.

Now, Canadian, repeat all of that back to me only in French this time. Ha! Can't do it? Good enough. You are a true Canadian. We can't disprove that, so we're sticking to it.

YOU CAN NOT ESCAPE US. WE ARE CANADIANS. YOU ARE OURS FOREVER, BIATCHES!

We do not release our grip on celebrities easily. We're like the glaciers of the Arctic, it takes us as long as thousands of years to give up that which we have taken. This poor woman's only crime was wanting a better life for herself in Canada. We can not forgive her that once she has appeared in a newspaper or web story, for she is thus officially a celebrity and NOT FOR EXPORT, EH? Unless she becomes famouser and moves to the States to sell out and cash in. We respect that.

Even the woman who gave Belushi the drugs which killled him is a Canadian celebrity of sorts. Yes, even Jenny McCarthy, because she married a famous Canadian and is thus half-Canadian by marriage.
