i'm sad. I liked/respected Russell Means. I didn't always agree with him but he always stood up for what he believed and lived his life working to better the lives of those he cared about.

rest well sir. you earned it.

Actually, there is a word for goodbye in the Sioux Language. If you recall from Blazing Saddles, when the entire Sioux Nation attacked:

The more frightening thing is that in a generation, there won't be Sioux words for anything.

National Geographic did a pretty good article about the Pine Ridge Reservation. The print issue had a nice map showing how the reservation lands kept shrinking as the government kept deciding that the land had things that they wanted, like gold.

Oh, Great Spirit,
whose voice I hear in the winds
and whose breath gives life
to all the world, hear me.
I am small and weak.
I need your strength and wisdom.

Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes
ever behold the red and purple sunset.
Make my hands respect the things you have made
and my ears sharp to hear your voice.

Make me wise so that I may understand
the things you have taught my people.
Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.

I seek strength, not to be superior to my brother,
but to fight my greatest enemy - myself.

Make me always ready to come to you
with clean hands and straight eyes,
so when life fades, as the fading sunset,
my spirit will come to you without shame.

Why do you assume that subby isn't an enemy of the Lakota?

2012-10-22 02:21:28 PM
Not to call this guy an idiot... but... what is it with the constant "We want our land back" thing in the Native American community?

Sure, it was ill-gotten by the US government, but the fact is, most of it has been developed on and the people on it aren't going anywhere. It's a lot of effort expended for something that has a .000000001% chance of happening.

I believe the Sioux for "goodbye" is "last tag". I think I saw that in Dead and Loving It. It was said by Van Helsing, who in addition to being a great physician with the cure for what ails you, was also a cunning linguist.

In the Saskatchewan language, there is also also no word for "goodbye". They have to stand waving until you are out of sight, saying goodbye over and over again until one side or the other gives up the fight, because good manners and custom demands it.

Since this is often fatal, given the clear lines of sight in much of Southern Saskatchewan, it is considered good manners to sneak off in the night with your host's beer coolers full of beer and your pick-up truck full of their furniture. This allows them to be grateful that you finally left and to get new furniture and beer, which means, of course, visiting town or their own family and friends until it is their turn to sneak off in the night with your TV and beer.

As the song says,

"You can tell me that your dog ran away,
then tell me that it took three days.
I've heard every joke, I've heard every word you say."

A Saskatchewaner has to give you his wife if admire her. Of course, he gets to shoot you if you take her. This is the little known difference between the people of the Saskatchewan and the Inuit, who live further North, where there is a lot less snow and wind.

I thought he looked familiar

Once upon a time, a woman was picking up firewood. She came upon a poisonous snake frozen in the snow. She took the snake home and nursed it back to health. One day the snake bit her on the cheek. As she lay dying, she asked the snake, "Why have you done this to me?" And the snake answered, "Look, biatch, you knew I was a snake.
