(Economist)   Good news, everybody. The Mexican remake of "The Untouchables" is going well, and they've green-lit "Get Shorty". That adds up to an 8% decline in piles of heads by the roadside   (economist.com) divider line 22

he government's normally stodgy official gazette listed the villains by their nicknames: Monkey, Beardy, Taliban and so on.

You're really askin' for a drone strike if your nickname is 'the Taliban'.

Looking at the mug shots, I see the mexican porn stache is de rigueur for drug kingpins.

Don't you think it is refreshing to see the words "green-lit" in a headline without the word "Fark" or "moderator"?

I hear John Hodgman is working on a new book: Nicknames of the Mexican Drug Lords.

He's using Ape Lad as bait, er, research assistant.

I noticed one of the nicknames was Beardy - I think you can find him at the Dunder Mifflin head office.

The downing of so many drug lords is a success for Felipe Calderón

So true, because once you get rid of a drug lord all the drugs he was bringing to the market stop being brought.

They need to drop that untouchables BS and go full-on Los Pepes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Pepes

A few bombs here and there targeting the biggest narcos and some threats (maybe even killings) of their family members will get their attention.

No more finding 8 heads in a duffle bag?

Every now and then, I indulge in a bit of gruesome fantasy and ponder that the most effective way to ensure that an endless stream of #2s don't step up to fill the shoes of a fallen kingpin is to simply take no prisoners when raiding a drug ring. Or al-Qaeda cell. Or whatever.

Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station!

*sigh*

Reality is depressing.

croesius: No more finding 8 heads in a duffle bag?

Now you'll only find 7.36 heads! It's a bit messier, but not quite so heavy.

Don't break your arm patting yourselves on the back but DO let us know when the murder rate in your country drops back to normal third world hellhole levels.

Now our children will be safe from getting all messed up on reefer.

Mexico isn't a hellhole because of drug lords (though it certainly doesn't help)... Mexico is a hellhole because Mexico is a hellhole.

So there is no correlation between prohibition and the rise of organized criminal elements?

Heh. Thanks. Seeing someone even more jaded than me brings back a bit of that optimism.
