There's a remake of Godzilla being made?

Didn't the Matthew Broderick movie kill any interest in this back in the 90's?

If it didn't, it should have.

/yes I'll probably go see it.

I was three items into the list before I realized it was about movie monsters and not about movie posters.

I love the ending of Godzilla 2000, where Godzilla has just burned the Orga to ashes, and proceeds to set Tokya on fire. It has a certain poignancy.

I saw that. the humans looking on lovingly as Godzilla stomps Japanese civilization back to the dark ages is priceless.

There's a plot hole related to Ghostbusters that always bugged me. When Venkman is explaining to the others what would happen if they choose the form of the destroyer, he uses J. Edger Hoover as an example for the others. Why is it that we don't see a 50 foot FBI director coming down the street then?

My four year old LOVES the Stay Puft guy! So much that while we were at the Hallmark store two weeks ago, she saw the musical ornament, and decided right then and there she HAD to get it for her and her daddy.

/we're a little unorthodox when it comes to parenting
//she also tried to walk around Target yesterday carrying a bloody brainless screaming rubber head, going "nom nom nom" to its lack of brains...
///yep, she's ready for Halloween.

Cloverfield is just awful. What about the creature from the Host? Would have been much better at #10.

I've never seen Cloverfield. That was an interesting clip. The monster is really creepy and different. I suppose I'll have to watch it at some point now.

Pretty much why I haven't seen it. I heard it was bad. I do like the way the monster looks and moves though.

Cause he did not wish for it. He mentioned it. Ray wished he could have a Statepuff Marsh mellow. That is why we got that loveable Destroyer.

Sorry, Venkman, but I'm terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought.

The only real problem with Cloverfield is the shaky cam. Otherwise it is a fun monster movie

Sorry, I've always preferred Gamera over Godzilla.
He's awesome.

Godzilla...big and got flame/laser breath...not too intelligent. Eh.

Gamera:
Protective shell.
Flies in two modes - forward by just his two leg areas...even better, UFO mode, all four leg hold aflame & spinning.
Flame breath or laser eyes.
Intelligent and aware.
And he's got skills!!

You've GOT TO love the Gymnastic bar routine he did against the knife-head creature.

Hell, I go full circle with it:

I liked the whole movie. The personal drama, the shaky cam, the monster, the easter eggs at the end, all of it.

The other problem is that all the characters are total douche-bags whom you wish would hurry up and get killed already.

I'm usually okay with some amount of shakey cam. Rec/Quarantine did it really well. What I hate is long sequences where people are running with the camera so all you see is the camera panning really fast up and down. The Cloverfield monster was cool looking, but I just couldn't get past the camera work enough to enjoy it

Plus, just think of the upskirt shots. Would have turned the movie into a hard R in no time.

The shaky cam really doesn't bother me. I can understand why so many people dislike it though. What gets me is heights- like the view from Tyrian's cell in the Eyrie, or in Avatar when they are in the top of the giant tree looking down. That literally makes my stomach do flip flops.

It drags. And, the suspense building is too detailed and slow to be enjoyable. Nice tail in it, but you end up going "FINALLY!" when each of the now hated characters is killed. They just drip Gen-X Doucheness.

That said, the monster shots make it worth seeing once.

I had to go look that up, since it has been a few years since I've seen it, you beat me too it. But yes, the "This monster is useless!" comment had me cracking up too. (Not a direct quote, but close. Take THAT American film makers!)

2012-10-22 12:57:05 PM
The Gamera "Guardian" series is actually pretty entertaining. The cinematography, the special effects and miniature quality 100 times better than the old movies. Better still, the people in the movies ask the questions we all want answered like "Why do all these giant monsters keep attacking Tokyo?" Also, they get bonus points for pointing out that 100s of people are killed by the "good guy" monster due to the insane amount of collateral damage.

Also, in Godzilla: Final Wars, the big guy kills off the American CGI Godzilla.

2012-10-22 12:57:56 PM
The weird thing about Final Wars is that the actors spoke two different languages. The American wrestler guy (forget his name) did all his lines undubbed in English, and the rest all spoke Japanese. Was strange to watch.

Or a better description of the characters is that they are just like people we all know. He didn't choose stereotypical characters - he chose relatively normal archetypes. The monster was great and the parasites were wicked-scary. I wouldn't complain too much about the characters - the obnoxious one, Hud, would fit in real well around here.

The monster definitely has a "Lovecraftian" feel to it. Not the traditional bipedal giant strolling through town.

They were there, I saw it in the theater on release and it originally had an "R" rating. After the film, we felt cheated we only got .5 seconds of bewbs in return for sitting through an awful movie.

Well, watching Jeff Bridges trying to act while totally blasted was fun. At some points his bloodshot eyes were the most scary thing in the film.

Well those are very nice.

Also, my dad took me to see KK at opening night and I am 100% sure it wasn't rated R. I participated in the local "King Kong Coloring Contest" and I don't think they marketed R-rated movies to kids that way. It probably did have the boobs - kind of like Airplane which also had brief nudity.

The only good thing about Cloverfield was the concept of doing a rampaging monster movie from the perspective of the inconsequential people running amok through the streets. To capture the horror they have when Something Big shows up. Otherwise, it was hell to sit through.
