I never heard that Bioshock Infinite was on life support. Hell they released the details on the SUPER MEGA EDITION COLLECTORS PACK a couple weeks ago (I know one is upwards of $150).

On the other hand, Prey 2 is on haitus, or "limbo" as they called it. Which sucks cause that looked like an insane game.

Bioshock Infinite has had a bit of a rocky development with rumors of others of the core team having left, 2 lead designers left earlier this year, multiplayer modes have been reduced or completely cut, Gears of War producer Rod Fergusson was brought in to help finish the game for its current 2013 deadline. The first Bioshock game also had a rocky history though.

Yeah, I'm sad about Prey 2, I'm betting that one disappears.

I wasn't ever interested in Bi honestly. Did they ditch the gimmicky portals and motion controls stuff? It's been 3-4 years since I heard anything about it.

It's barely been 4 years since the first Bioshock came out....

Bioshock Infinite was announced last year, and I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with motion controls. You may be thinking of Fable: The Journey which just came out. That's a full fledged Kinect game (and looks pretty crappy).

Really hoping this one doesn't end up bombing big time. Was very interested when the first trailers hit, but with all the trouble they've had making it work, I'm expecting it to crash and burn on Day 1.

But hey, if it launches smoothly and isn't bug-ridden like its earlier sibling, I'll pick it up the second week after launch. The premise is interesting and the gameplay looks to be full of variety. Since we will never see another System Shock, I'll take what I can get.

I never played System Shock. I'd like to, but my laptop can barely support the browser I'm using and I have no other PC. That being said, Bioshock is one of my top five all time favorite games and I'm really looking forward to Infinite.

If you've seen all the footage they've released so far, I don't know how you couldn't be excited about it. Everything I've seen-from the city, the skylines, the abilities, the variety of enemies, the space-time rips, the storyline with the warring factions, the historical context, etc.- well, let's just say I hope I'm not disappointed. And I'm also hoping for the relationship between Booker and Elizabeth to be better than that of Gordon and Alyx in Half Life. From what I've seen, they are really paying attention to the vocal performances.

I could be setting myself up for disappointment, sure, but we'll cross that bridge in February.

Oh and as for the departures, I'm guessing most of their work was already done on the game and they have simply moved on to new opportunities. I have never heard anything about the game being in development trouble.

Bioshock 2 killed all my interest in the series. This game will have to get extremely good customer reviews before I'll even start to consider it.

I played Bioshock 2 until the point where the player acquires the movie camera. I was so annoyed at having to grind out levels with that piece of crap that I haven't played the game since then. Anyhow, it's not like it's been years and years since the last Bioshock came out, unlike, say, Half-Life 2. If the developers need a little more time to fine-tune things, that's fine by me.

Why? Because I've been playing games for a long time and expect the sales pitch to be as close to the real thing as a waterbed in winter is to making love to a sea nymph in the Caribbean ocean.

You can only cocktease people for a certain length of time; then it switches into apathy no matter how cool the finalized product might be. Worse, if the teasing goes on for too long, you hit Duke Nukem territory.

The game interface of a System Shock game is likely too complex to be easily adapted to a game controller interface; consequently, a new iteration of the series is unlikely.

Yeah, I'm buying the songbird edition from Gamestop. This is one of the few series I will blindly get behind it without considering reviews and such.

/actually liked Bioshock 2, mostly because of the Little Sister support system, made it much tougher.

Bioshock 1 and Bioshock Infinite are made by Irrational Games.
Bioshock 2 was made by 2K Marin.

System shock is one of the greatest games of all time. So far ahead of its time it sadly sold poorly.

Basically think epic first person rpg on a space station controlled by scary insane ai.

Ss2 was First game with real physics too, iirc.

System Shock had one of the best video game villains ever. Nothing like being watched by a schizo, omniscent AI with a god complex and stuttering problem that must have been created by a threesome of the HAL 9000, Max Headroom and the little girl in The Exorcist. Explaining how SHODAN reappears in System Shock 2 was pretty good too. But that voice of SHODAN's was too freaky to forget.

It can be done, and I can easily think of how it could be done.

The only thing that was complex (interface wise) was switching between the shooting mode and interactivity mode. That could easily be done with a shoulder button now.

And they could streamline some parts (like having a button to pick things up without having to go to interactivity mode).

I mean, system shock isn't about blowing the crap out of stuff with tons of guns, and there's plenty of buttons on a modern controller.

It's amazing to me how the gaming groupthink goes on and on about "story" (videogames as a whole are a shiate medium for storytelling, even games widely believed to have a great "story" by the hivemind), but completely have no concept or appreciation for art design ... which video games as a medium can absolutely do quite well. BioShock being one of those games.

2012-10-22 05:36:01 PM
I don't think the problem is the interface, the problem is EA owns the name and rights to the System Shock universe.

I would guess Levine might be iffy about returning to them when they both sold poorly too.

It's funny but when I think of the best computer games I have played since I started gaming in 84 SS1 is still in the top 5.

You're going to have to explain why an interactive form of storytelling is more 'shiat' than movies or novels or oral tradition. Otherwise you're a farktard.

Story is exactly the reason we like System Shock. It wasn't all about "blast the bad guy".

Now, I like to blast the bad guy as much as the next dude (hell, I have played enough Halo Reach to become an Inheritor), but for my weekend playing, I prefer something a little more intellectual (whereas my halo playing is just to blow off a little steam after a long 10+ hour workday).

Anyway, if you want to talk about appreciation for art design in games, you need go no further than Ico.

Huh, I don't remember a camera in 2 but sure enough there was one. Maybe I blanked that out or perhaps it wasn't needed?

I liked Bioshock 2. Of course it wasn't as good as the original, but the story was still pretty good. Plus the animation was smoother and I thought playing it was more enjoyable. Course Bioshock 1 was out 3+ years before it.

He could be a PS3 fan and did not get Bioshock until 4 years ago (October of 2008). So technically, he is correct. Though the other two releases were back in August of 07 (360 and PC).

Sadly a new System Shock will never happen. The rights are owned by an insurance company who seem quite content to sit on them (or want a ridiculous ammount to sell them.)

To be honest, there have been times where I did not know there was some kind of media that came out before I saw it on my choice of media player. So a game that came out on, lets say, the GameCube on a certain date would be the date I use while talking about it rather then the day it came out first on another system.

This isn't a matter of someone using the data of release on his platform of choice. This is a matter of a guy authoritatively declaring the time "since the first Bioshock came out". Moreover, the platform he plays on has nothing at all to do with the inaccuracy of his statement that "Bioshock Infinite was announced last year".

He's just plain wrong, technically or otherwise.

Technically or not, there are people out there who are ignorant of the release date before hand or assumed that said game was released on multiple platforms at the same time on that one date. So once again, technically he is correct and wrong all at once.
