A note from Unfreakable:

I don't really look at this as a Democrat thing or a Republican thing or a political thing, I consider this an Internet thing. The same as when Fark helped send a crowbar and a Half-Life strategy manual to the scientist at the LHC that looked like Gordon Freeman in one of the publicity photos.

A lot of people are saying, "Hey, he can afford to buy his own car!" Of course he can. This isn't about helping Joe because he can't afford a car, it's about making a silly Internet meme become reality, and also to help some charities. If you really want to discuss politics, I'd ask that you go over to the politics tab; there are a lot of current stories there that you can discuss. This one is about having fun and doing something neat. If you don't want to join in, you don't have to--that's your choice. I'd just ask that you find a different thread that's more to your liking.

To all of you Farkers that have helped in any way, whether it was contributing with money, or time, or organizing any of this, or helping share the word on your Facebook wall or tweeting it--YOU FREAKING ROCK. Thank you for what you've done, and hopefully what you'll continue to do. This is awesome and everybody who has had a hand in helping to set this up or keep the momentum going is fantastic. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

DO NOT WANT Poster Girl: Good morning all you good people.

Good morning!

I've been getting a lot of attention for GJTB on Twitter. I've had responses from someone at an urban affiliate for FoxNews. My followers have jumped from a few close friends to over 100 GJTB followers.

I took a little 'me time' this weekend, but I am ready to tweet the Fark out of everyone I can today!

As said in other GJTB threads, I admire you people.

I piss on those who find this effort meaningless, or view it through partisan lenses.

This is a humorous, meme-y way to leave the world a little better than you found it. And that, my brothers and sisters, is the meaning of life. There, I've settled the age-old question for you where philosophers have failed.

I'd also like to remind everyone that charity is a lifelong commitment, and I hope your generosity will extend to non-Trans-Am-related concerns. I'm not rich, either. But it's the least we can do.

So, the whole thing here is you can't actually give him the car because of his position as Vice President, but what if he hypothetically doesn't get re-elected (hey, there's still hope for Gary Johnson to win, right? right?)? I guess the nice thing to do would still be to auction the car off, but you could legally give it to him after that, right?

Alternatively, how cool would it be if Biden went all out and bought the car in the auction, with his own money?

I haven't donated yet. I don't like that some of the money is going to GLAAD (not because I have anything against gay people, but I don't think GLAAD is addressing a pressing enough issue that they need my money).

Anyhow, I think for things that support multiple charities like this, donors should be presented with some checkboxes saying where their share of the money should go. I'd gladly donate to the other 3 charities.

He'd still be Vice President until January 20, so there would be plenty of time to arrange not giving it to him.

I can understand that. We've blanketed donations across several charities to give donators the opportunity to give to one of the charities that they prefer. If this doesn't suit you, you can always make a charitable donation to the ones you prefer individually. Here are the links:

Okay, team- just a quick note on the donations. I know you're just as excited as I am to see the donations climb when you look at the Indiegogo site. it's cool to see the chart that shows our progress, and no one can dispute the fact that this cause raised over half of its expected goal in a week. I think that's one giant Eff Ewe to the haters, and maybe why we haven't been seeing the volume of thread-shiatters today.

However, I don't want you to get discouraged if the pace of the donations slow. There are some perfectly valid reasons why that could happen. Most of us are between pay periods, or broke. We've seen exponential growth, but that may not continue. It may take time for national attention to bury its way into the thick skulls of Steve Taxpayer. Etc.

If that happens, ignore the data haters. Do not get discouraged. Consider that donations will flow and ebb based on the unseen forces of economics. We are going to make this work. We are going to attain our goal. Just don't get uptight if it doesn't happen as fast as you want it to.

I'd love to get some help out there, and I know we've got more people tweeting that just the few listed daily in the threads. I think we need this to get some national attention to push us over the hump, but that can take time.

A note from The Link:

All the while, Joe Biden has calmly and quietly been an incredible Vice President. He was one of the first politicians to publicly embrace gay marriage and may have been personally responsible for President Obama coming out in favor of gay marriage and the subsequent change in the Democratic Party's platform. He is also a stunningly intelligent politician who understands the nuance of foreign and domestic policy. He is also not afraid to show disdain for factually deficient arguments.

Just wrote a couple of comments in the last thread. Here is the main one:

RichieLaw: Tellingthem: vander7194: vygramul: vander7194: I have a remarkably dumb question, and hopefully you'll forgive it. I understand what you are doing and why, but isn't there a chance the car, when auctioned off, would bring less than the $25,000 (or however much) raised? Wouldn't it be better to just giver the money directly to the charity? I know it's not as fun that way, but still.....

First off, the car's not going to cost $25 grand. Second, that's what a reserve price is for.

Yeah, I am familiar with reserve prices. If it wasn't met, what then? I've seen many auctions where the reserve isn't met.

Auctioning things off for charity is nothing new. I have participated in them before. Basically a lot will depend on how much publicity we get. The more publicity usually equals a higher sale price. And more publicity also equals a better auction. Some people have been looking into the Barrett-Jackson auction for example. They are a nationally televised auction known for muscle cars and charity auctions. And if we can get in that one that would put it in a top-tier auction. And the odds that the car would make much more money there are high. However that may not happen. But there are always others options as well that people are looking at. It sounds like you are just looking for specifics but (to my knowledge) they have not been finalized yet. As things progress I'm sure more specific details will come. But to try to answer your question: Is it possible that the car will not get a high auction price? yes. Is it possible that the car will make much more money at auction? yes.

Another thing to remember is that this is not a professional charity that has spent months organizing this single event. This came from the initial idea to this point in about a week. It is something that is getting more refined everyday. If you are not comfortable donating to this right now you can wait for more details to come. Or you can simply cut us out and donate directly to the charities themsel ...

This thing will all come down to a cost-benefit analysis at the end of the campaign. The goal will be to determine what is going to help the charities the most. If we get more media attention and find a car in perfect condition at a reasonable price, then we will try to go through the auction. The auction doesn't work without the media attention, possibly Joe Biden giving us a "WHAT UP" and finding a mint condition awesome looking car.

If it is determined that an auction is not reasonable, i.e. we will not be able to make a net profit on the auctioning of the vehicle, as well as purchase the vehicle as a contingency to a successful sale at auction, the monies contributed will be donated directly to the charities minus expenses for perks and any tax obligation that I may owe.

Couple more things:

1. Everyone has done a great job! It seems that the pace of donations really slow down on Fri-Sunday. I am going to advocate that everyone take off from doing anything GJTB related during that time so that we do not get burnt out or yelled at by our SO's. We can hit it hard on Monday through Thursday (or even Monday through Wednesday) and then relax and rest. We still have a long time to campaign.

This also explains my recent absence as I've been terribly busy getting caught up at work and with life. I really do not have the time to spend 22 hours a day on this, as fun and awesome as it is.

2. I think we should finalize the Holy T-Shirt of Fark for the perks. I am okay with either of those designs. I do not think we have to worry about copyright as we are doing this all for charity. Fair use and all that. Worse comes to worse we will get a cease and desist letter which I can respond to if needed. Once this is done that will finalize the perks and we can just keep on, keeping on.

3. Thread submittal. I am thinking that we only need a new thread maybe twice a week, or unless it gets over 1000 comments. I do not want to spam the Fark queue unnecessarily. Especially because I want to do a huge social media bombing run the last week of the campaign.

4. I have still not heard back from 3 of our 4 charities. Will continue to monitor.

Hope this helps! I know that I have some emails from Farkers that I need to respond to. I will try do that as soon as possible!

Cheers.

The whole "he can't accept it" thing is a myth. The law and ethics rules make that quite clear. This is not an attempt to purchase influence, nor does it come from any group that's prohibited from giving gifts to politicians. It doesn't even have the appearance of impropriety.

It would be very cool if Biden bought the car.

Just curious, what engines are people using for macros? I've been using ROFLbot, which I think is fine, but I'd be interested in looking at others to check out available options. What I like about ROFLbot is that it does the job well enough, and offers one-click hosting. (I've been using Imgur, but there are others on there.) I'm not wedded to that, but I like the convenience of it. I only wish it had a few more text options, such as colour, style, etc. Instead of reinventing the wheel, I'd like to hear what others are liking. (Or NOT liking.)

I've been using PowerPoint, actually, since I'm a corporate drone.

Whenever I make one (which is rare) I just use Gimp, then host in on photobucket.

I don't like this new FarkUs tab because I keep forgetting about it and I feel like I'm always coming in late.

kumanoki I created a twitterbomb list for news agencies and sent it to the gjtbdocs email. I don't know if MustangFive saw it or not, I've been working/creating lesson plans/doing lab work and my schedule went all freaky-deaky. It's just local news agencies across the country if you wanna use it. I figure having 7-12 people twitterbomb a local station would be more effective than just one or two.

I've been thinking about this, and one thing keeps coming back to me: We REALLY should change the wording at the top of the Indiegogo page. Here's why:

"Buy Vice President Biden a Trans Am" is probably hurting our campaign, because it tends to suggest that we intend to buy Vice President Biden a Trans Am. Which we do not, and which many people disagree with.

In days of old, approximately 40 minutes ago, some people might have thought to themselves, "Hmm, that sounds a bit odd, or at least intrigueing. Let me read on, and see if I can learn some more, to sate my confusion or curiosity." (They may have added an "Eh, wot?" to this.) I modern times, however, a lot of people may not even finish reading the whole title. They'll conclude the wrong thing, react viscerally, and walk away. They won't get the joke, and they'll steam away wondering why a bunch of morans would do such a thing.

We can see the evidence of this, day after day, in the threads and other discussion of the thing. A lot of people arent' getting it. And I don't think it's any coincidence that many of those people seem to be echoing the actual words that we ourselves put in huge fushia letters right at the top of the page. They honestly believe that we intend to buy a car for a rich and powerful man, just as a hoot, and that we're doing it because we think he's an extremely awesome person. It states a non-truth that many disagree with for a wide range of reasons -- many of them quite reasonable -- and also tends to put off those who happen to dislike the Vice President or his party.

Were this some kind of contest to see who could read past the title and maybe win something for it, we might chortle at those people. As it happens, I think we're probably turning away lots of potential donors.

So let's change the wording. I think the alternative is obvious: GIVE JOE THE BIRD.

Not just because that's the language we're using in most of the promotions. (Which, by the way, I can't help also wondering may give the page title the sense of some kind of bait-and-switch for some people. They come there wondering what it's about, then conclude, in just a couple seconds, that it's a particular thing it's not.) "Give Joe the Bird" is eccumenical in tone: It appears to Biden supporters and detractors alike. And by straddling that fence, it helps to lead a larger number of potential donors further down the page, so that they can actually learn what this whole thing is about.

What do you all think?

A very special note from Unfreakable:

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

We can rotate through the list of TV stations; we can retweet people we've hit up before. i just need about eight or nine suggestions to create the list for today.

kumanoki: serial_crusher: dickfreckle: This is a humorous, meme-y way to leave the world a little better than you found it. And that, my brothers and sisters, is the meaning of life. There, I've settled the age-old question for you where philosophers have failed.

I can understand that. We've blanketed donations across several charities to give donators the opportunity to give to one of the charities that they prefer. If this doesn't suit you, you can always make a charitable donation to the ones you prefer individually. Here are the links:

Biden Breast Health Initiative
www.bbhi4health.org/

Doctors Without Borders
www.doctorswithoutborders.org/

Wounded Warrior Project
www.woundedwarriorproject.org/

I figured if I made $6.25 donations to each of the other 3 charities, they'd eat a lot of costs in credit card processing fees, plus I wanted to support the GJTB concept, so GLAAD owes me a beer, or the other charities $2.08.

WalMartian: We need to find a way to kick this in the butt; interest seems to be waning.

Dear WalMartian, here is my plan:

Walk 400 yards north from your house.. no wait, that's wrong. Let me start over.

My plan is to hold as we are right now, until we hit $15K, which we will (even if only in dribs and drabs). This should happen between now and Friday.

Everyone should be quietly planning a full-on assault until then, strarting right now, if you aren't already. Image macros, new ads, whatever you can think of. Red Leaders work on hit lists, Twitter-shiatters review those lists and do some excerses to get ready to open fire. All that sharpening-the-bayonets stuff.

When it hits $15K -- or by some predetermined point late Friday, if it hasn't by then -- everyone open fire all at once. Call it a 'surge' or whatever you want, but the goal is shock and awe.

Why: I feel that $15K is an important symbolic milestone, a tipping point that proves the merits and vitality of the campaign. People looking at it at that point will see that there is "only" $10K left to go, and I think that will encourage an uptick in donations, as people decide they want to be on the winning team. This also affords us a second chance at people who either missed earier waves of promotion, or weren't convinced at that time.*

Good plan? Worst plan ever? Other ideas?

* Again, I *emphatically* advise changing the wording in the title of the Indigogo page before we reach this point. People who were turned off by the notion of buying a rich Democrat a car will be the next time, too. We need to change the title to clarify that he's not really getting the car (or, rather, stop saying that he is), and to make it more eccumenical, including for detractors. GIVE JOE THE BIRD!!

WalMartian: We need to find a way to kick this in the butt; interest seems to be waning.

From Friday's thread:

Okay, team- just a quick note on the donations. I know you're just as excited as I am to see the donations climb when you look at the Indiegogo site. It's cool to see the chart that shows our progress, and no one can dispute the fact that this cause raised over half of its expected goal in a week. I think that's one giant F-U to the haters, and maybe why we haven't been seeing the volume of thread-shiatters today.

However, I don't want you to get discouraged if the pace of the donations slow. There are some perfectly valid reasons why that could happen. Most of us are between pay periods, or broke. We've seen exponential growth, but that may not continue. It may take time for national attention to bury its way into the thick skulls of John Q. Taxpayer. Also, we are buried under the noise of the middle of the largest national news cycle in four years.
If that happens, ignore the data haters. Do not get discouraged. Consider that donations will flow and ebb based on the unseen forces of economics. We are going to make this work. We are going to attain our goal. Just don't get uptight if it doesn't happen as fast as you want it to.

Whatever you say, Donald:

All the while, Joe Biden has calmly and quietly been an incredible Vice President. He was one of the first politicians to publicly embrace gay marriage and may have been personally responsible for President Obama coming out in favor of gay marriage and the subsequent change in the Democratic Party's platform. He is also a stunningly intelligent politician who understands the nuance of foreign and domestic policy. He is also not afraid to show disdain for factually deficient arguments.

Agreed, I'd just block it as a knee jerk and not even read it. If I did have to read it, I'd definitely not donate. One well crafted email or link to a post I might read, but en masse 140 characters, is still spam.

I also own a Firebird WS6 (which is the same as a F-Body Trans Am), plus a 1969 Firebird, and there is no way you're getting in excess of 25k for a F-Body at auction unless you have a shiatload of mods under the hood. No one pays more than 20k for a low miles late 1990s stock one. Moving beyond that, Biden has no standing in the car community. The fact he touched it and there is a meme isn't going to make people pay 6k plus over market value for it. Some dealer tried to get a premium for Obama's Charger R/T (which Obama actually owned and drove for a time) and he couldn't score that. There are two ways a late model Bird or Trans Am has value. Someone built the hell out of it or its a low mile virgin car ready for you to build up. Biden and meme isn't going to do it.

The only reason people buy F-Bodys, with all their noise issues and spartan interiors is that they are really light, have a LS1, and make excellent drag cars that you can get for 10k to 15k or so. No one is showing up at the track with their F-Body and telling all the rednecks "Yeah this is the Trans Am that Biden touched and I paid in excess of 25k for this sucker." You'd get laughed right off the track.

You sound like a pretty knowledgable guy about this type of vehicle. I'd love to get your input as to how we can make the effort work on the charity/ gearhead end of things. I would imagine that we're pushing 30 years on the specific make of vehicle, and that's got to be getting close to classic, right?
There's no limit to the amount of money that could feasibly be put into the car to make it worthy of high-end auctions, but we're also talking about the name attached to it. I disagree with your stance that the name attached to the car wouldn't be enough to get someone to drop coin on it for charity. It's the VP.

Regardless of that, twitterbombs work because the people who follow famous people also see these. They may click the link, they may get involved. That's the goal. if someone famous gets behind it, that's bonus.

I would imagine that we're pushing 30 years on the specific make of vehicle, and that's got to be getting close to classic, right?

First off, Trans Am has minimal concept of classic. They were mass produced vehicles and very affordable. They weren't nice cars relative to say the Corvette and don't command a premium on the block. I paid 20k for a low mileage 1969 Firebird Sport Coupe. That's second year of production, convertible, 400 cu inch engine Ram Air IV and the vehicle had sub 40k on the clock. Interior was immaculate.

1983 to 1990 are some of the least sought after to be honest. Smallest size and smaller engine. Pre 1974 with low mileage or F-Body with the LS1 are the only two that people desire. These days a pre 74 with low miles, nice engine, and intact interior might might bring in a lot on an auction block, but I doubt people are selling them for under 30k. If you have one of those you own it because you love the car and it is your baby.

The second gen Trans Am with a 455 might hold some value in that the 455 was one of the best muscle car engines from their heyday. Lots of nostalgia around that engine. The other packages of the Firebird/Trans Am are okay but they lack the cachet of being first gen.

Third gens are the cheap car you buy your 16 year old kid so he can learn to fix a car. I know three guys who bought cars from that gen for their son to tinker with. I don't think anyone paid over 10k for one. Or you buy it cheap, throw a lot of money into it and and get a sub 10 second track car.

The 4th gen platform does have some value if you can get a good LS1 as I said, the LT1 is not sought after.

There's no limit to the amount of money that could feasibly be put into the car to make it worthy of high-end auctions, but we're also talking about the name attached to it. I disagree with your stance that the name attached to the car wouldn't be enough to get someone to drop coin on it for charity. It's the VP.

I'd argue that very few people want to pay to buy an already racing built Trans Am. They're incredibly easy cars to work on for the most part and most people who own one bought it as a garage project. A lot of the pleasure I get from my two Firebirds was I did all the upgrades myself. The issue I see with this project is you're going to have trouble finding one in pristine condition that people want and 25k is overkill for a high mileage one that someone will just rip apart in their garage. It needs to be something some Pontiac loyalist wants as a collection showpiece or something dirt cheap for a race car. As for the Biden thing, to each their own.

My suggestion would be to get active on:

www.ls1tech.com
www.firebirdnation.com

Both those forums have for sale sections where you can get an idea of what commands what price. I haven't purchased any classic muscle in a long time so my view of what is worth what and what is sought after could be wildly off. They'll also be able to point to the current desired racing mods. Again I'm not current. I put a procharger on my LS1 'Bird but my understanding is that has fallen out of favor in favor of other forced induction. Try to get some company to throw in some free parts, a discount on parts, or something like that. Getting some money off at Holley or something special from them with a Biden stamped part will command more premium than it being touch by Biden.

Yeah, man! That's what we needed. We need to get a press release out to those websites, stat. I feel like the gearhead element is missing from our effort here.

Thank you! That was really useful information, and I actually learned something today.

ha-ha-guy: The issue I see with this project is you're going to have trouble finding one in pristine condition that people want and 25k is overkill for a high mileage one that someone will just rip apart in their garage. It needs to be something some Pontiac loyalist wants as a collection showpiece or something dirt cheap for a race car. As for the Biden thing, to each their own.

I imagine that this is more for the garage queen / headlight polisher crowd. The car in the article is the pace car version; only an insane person would try to hot-rod a carb turbo.

/not that there's any lack of insane gearheads.

I suggested in another thread that we try to target the sports-watching community. The World Series starts tonight at 5:07pm (PT). It is scheduled at the same time for the 25th, 27th, 28th, 29th and 31st.

Perhaps we can tweet players/teams right around the 7th innings stretch?

One thing I noticed, when you guys were tweeting major cities Nashville was targeted.
Memphis is a bigger metro area than Nashville and covers West TN, AR, MS and LA.

Maybe, but I would think there'd be a lot of eyes to see it. Maybe we can come up with some tweets specific to the particular sport?

Sylvia_Bandersnatch: WalMartian: We need to find a way to kick this in the butt; interest seems to be waning.

THIS.

ha-ha-guy: WalMartian: halfof33: Odoriferous Queef: "Twitter is a communication tool used the world over where people can come together to biatch about movies and share pornography with one another. Moreover, a a twitterbomb is when many people focus on one person's twitter feed, causing it to be filled with the same information from several different sources."

So you're saying it's SPAM.

That was what i was thinking.

I agree, too. If I were someone getting multiple tweets about the same thing from a bunch of people, it would piss me off and I'd ignore it.

/or you could buy a Trans Am ...

Yeah. Some people might have noticed that not everything was thought out to the ninth degree. This was a joke that started on fark that turned into something. We can all armchair quarterback and find ways to change the initial concept to make it "better', but then you are really changing the whole premise.

We are also well aware that the idea is ludicrous. There is a 90% chance that no car is ever purchased or even sent to auction. The logistics are incredible and the ability to get a car that people would want to spend a lot of money on that would coincide with the meme is very small. We've still not heard from the Biden people so that might be dead in the water as well.

The goal has ALWAYS been to get the most valuable car for the money if that is the way to go. We understand that a regular TA is not going to be worth much.

As far as the twitter "spam" I would respectfully disagree. It has driven massive traffic to the site and been responsible for a lot of our donations.

Sylvia_Bandersnatch if you're on, I have an idea: could you come up with an alternate opening statement for the donation site? It may be easier for RichieLaw to change it, if he has a definite something to change it to.

Here's mine:
(It may have to start with "Buy Vice President Biden a TransAm", so I'm keeping that)

Buy Vice President Biden a TransAm
Help us raise $25,000 for charity by recreating the internet meme of Joe Biden with a Trans Am in the White House driveway.

I saw that. The charity aspect seems to be an afterthought (to me anyway). I just thought that since Sylvia was suggesting a change, that maybe she had a specific change in mind.

I do, and I've said it several times already: REPLACE the text at the TOP of the Indiegogo page with "Give Joe the Bird!" or similar. I just checked, fresh reload, and it still says, "Buy Vice President Biden a TransAm [sic]". I think that will be the first thing many people see, and for many of them it will be the only part they read. The countless comments we've gotten in these threads asking why we hope to buy a car for a rich politician should be evidence of that, and were this mere trolling or just for yuks, that would be funny, rather than distressing. Many people do not agree with that idea. Many people don't want to buy Vice President Biden a Trans Am, or any other car, or anything at all. Many would like to buy him a one-way Amtrak ticket back to Delaware.

I think if we want to appeal only to young, hip Democratic-leaning folks, that header is fine. I think if we'd like to expand the potential donorship beyond that, a change is very much in order. I don't know how much clearer I can make this:

OUT: "Buy Vice President a TransAm"
IN: "Give Joe the Bird!"
