I heard some very astute recommendations for talking heads that focus on this type of 'news'. if I can get a list of those people, I will amend this list because it's pretty dry.

kumanoki: serial_crusher: dickfreckle: This is a humorous, meme-y way to leave the world a little better than you found it. And that, my brothers and sisters, is the meaning of life. There, I've settled the age-old question for you where philosophers have failed.

I haven't donated yet. I don't like that some of the money is going to GLAAD (not because I have anything against gay people, but I don't think GLAAD is addressing a pressing enough issue that they need my money).

Anyhow, I think for things that support multiple charities like this, donors should be presented with some checkboxes saying where their share of the money should go. I'd gladly donate to the other 3 charities.

I can understand that. We've blanketed donations across several charities to give donators the opportunity to give to one of the charities that they prefer. If this doesn't suit you, you can always make a charitable donation to the ones you prefer individually. Here are the links:

Biden Breast Health Initiative
www.bbhi4health.org/

Doctors Without Borders
www.doctorswithoutborders.org/

Wounded Warrior Project
www.woundedwarriorproject.org/

I figured if I made $6.25 donations to each of the other 3 charities, they'd eat a lot of costs in credit card processing fees, plus I wanted to support the GJTB concept, so GLAAD owes me a beer, or the other charities $2.08.

WalMartian: We need to find a way to kick this in the butt; interest seems to be waning.

Dear WalMartian, here is my plan:

Walk 400 yards north from your house.. no wait, that's wrong. Let me start over.

My plan is to hold as we are right now, until we hit $15K, which we will (even if only in dribs and drabs). This should happen between now and Friday.

Everyone should be quietly planning a full-on assault until then, strarting right now, if you aren't already. Image macros, new ads, whatever you can think of. Red Leaders work on hit lists, Twitter-shiatters review those lists and do some excerses to get ready to open fire. All that sharpening-the-bayonets stuff.

When it hits $15K -- or by some predetermined point late Friday, if it hasn't by then -- everyone open fire all at once. Call it a 'surge' or whatever you want, but the goal is shock and awe.

Why: I feel that $15K is an important symbolic milestone, a tipping point that proves the merits and vitality of the campaign. People looking at it at that point will see that there is "only" $10K left to go, and I think that will encourage an uptick in donations, as people decide they want to be on the winning team. This also affords us a second chance at people who either missed earier waves of promotion, or weren't convinced at that time.*

Good plan? Worst plan ever? Other ideas?

* Again, I *emphatically* advise changing the wording in the title of the Indigogo page before we reach this point. People who were turned off by the notion of buying a rich Democrat a car will be the next time, too. We need to change the title to clarify that he's not really getting the car (or, rather, stop saying that he is), and to make it more eccumenical, including for detractors. GIVE JOE THE BIRD!!

From Friday's thread:

Okay, team- just a quick note on the donations. I know you're just as excited as I am to see the donations climb when you look at the Indiegogo site. It's cool to see the chart that shows our progress, and no one can dispute the fact that this cause raised over half of its expected goal in a week. I think that's one giant F-U to the haters, and maybe why we haven't been seeing the volume of thread-shiatters today.

However, I don't want you to get discouraged if the pace of the donations slow. There are some perfectly valid reasons why that could happen. Most of us are between pay periods, or broke. We've seen exponential growth, but that may not continue. It may take time for national attention to bury its way into the thick skulls of John Q. Taxpayer. Also, we are buried under the noise of the middle of the largest national news cycle in four years.
If that happens, ignore the data haters. Do not get discouraged. Consider that donations will flow and ebb based on the unseen forces of economics. We are going to make this work. We are going to attain our goal. Just don't get uptight if it doesn't happen as fast as you want it to.

2012-10-24 12:20:23 PM

kumanoki: Are we doing a Wednesday thread, or are we using this thread as home base for the time being? I plan to pull together some more people to tweet today. If SarahDiddle has access to the list, I'd love to get her input. Also, anyone else who has ideas on who to bomb, let me know. We can rotate through the list of TV stations; we can retweet people we've hit up before. i just need about eight or nine suggestions to create the list for today.

I think the goal is to keep it to one thread each week or until the thread gets to a 1000 comments. The people that are still hanging on will know where to go, and then we won't spam the Fark page too much.

At least until the last two weeks before the end of the campaign. Then we're going to go crazy.

Whatever you say, Donald:

All the while, Joe Biden has calmly and quietly been an incredible Vice President. He was one of the first politicians to publicly embrace gay marriage and may have been personally responsible for President Obama coming out in favor of gay marriage and the subsequent change in the Democratic Party's platform. He is also a stunningly intelligent politician who understands the nuance of foreign and domestic policy. He is also not afraid to show disdain for factually deficient arguments.

Agreed, I'd just block it as a knee jerk and not even read it. If I did have to read it, I'd definitely not donate. One well crafted email or link to a post I might read, but en masse 140 characters, is still spam.

I also own a Firebird WS6 (which is the same as a F-Body Trans Am), plus a 1969 Firebird, and there is no way you're getting in excess of 25k for a F-Body at auction unless you have a shiatload of mods under the hood. No one pays more than 20k for a low miles late 1990s stock one. Moving beyond that, Biden has no standing in the car community. The fact he touched it and there is a meme isn't going to make people pay 6k plus over market value for it. Some dealer tried to get a premium for Obama's Charger R/T (which Obama actually owned and drove for a time) and he couldn't score that. There are two ways a late model Bird or Trans Am has value. Someone built the hell out of it or its a low mile virgin car ready for you to build up. Biden and meme isn't going to do it.

The only reason people buy F-Bodys, with all their noise issues and spartan interiors is that they are really light, have a LS1, and make excellent drag cars that you can get for 10k to 15k or so. No one is showing up at the track with their F-Body and telling all the rednecks "Yeah this is the Trans Am that Biden touched and I paid in excess of 25k for this sucker." You'd get laughed right off the track.

You sound like a pretty knowledgable guy about this type of vehicle. I'd love to get your input as to how we can make the effort work on the charity/ gearhead end of things. I would imagine that we're pushing 30 years on the specific make of vehicle, and that's got to be getting close to classic, right?
There's no limit to the amount of money that could feasibly be put into the car to make it worthy of high-end auctions, but we're also talking about the name attached to it. I disagree with your stance that the name attached to the car wouldn't be enough to get someone to drop coin on it for charity. It's the VP.

Regardless of that, twitterbombs work because the people who follow famous people also see these. They may click the link, they may get involved. That's the goal. if someone famous gets behind it, that's bonus.

I would imagine that we're pushing 30 years on the specific make of vehicle, and that's got to be getting close to classic, right?

First off, Trans Am has minimal concept of classic. They were mass produced vehicles and very affordable. They weren't nice cars relative to say the Corvette and don't command a premium on the block. I paid 20k for a low mileage 1969 Firebird Sport Coupe. That's second year of production, convertible, 400 cu inch engine Ram Air IV and the vehicle had sub 40k on the clock. Interior was immaculate.

1983 to 1990 are some of the least sought after to be honest. Smallest size and smaller engine. Pre 1974 with low mileage or F-Body with the LS1 are the only two that people desire. These days a pre 74 with low miles, nice engine, and intact interior might might bring in a lot on an auction block, but I doubt people are selling them for under 30k. If you have one of those you own it because you love the car and it is your baby.

The second gen Trans Am with a 455 might hold some value in that the 455 was one of the best muscle car engines from their heyday. Lots of nostalgia around that engine. The other packages of the Firebird/Trans Am are okay but they lack the cachet of being first gen.

Third gens are the cheap car you buy your 16 year old kid so he can learn to fix a car. I know three guys who bought cars from that gen for their son to tinker with. I don't think anyone paid over 10k for one. Or you buy it cheap, throw a lot of money into it and and get a sub 10 second track car.

The 4th gen platform does have some value if you can get a good LS1 as I said, the LT1 is not sought after.

There's no limit to the amount of money that could feasibly be put into the car to make it worthy of high-end auctions, but we're also talking about the name attached to it. I disagree with your stance that the name attached to the car wouldn't be enough to get someone to drop coin on it for charity. It's the VP.

I'd argue that very few people want to pay to buy an already racing built Trans Am. They're incredibly easy cars to work on for the most part and most people who own one bought it as a garage project. A lot of the pleasure I get from my two Firebirds was I did all the upgrades myself. The issue I see with this project is you're going to have trouble finding one in pristine condition that people want and 25k is overkill for a high mileage one that someone will just rip apart in their garage. It needs to be something some Pontiac loyalist wants as a collection showpiece or something dirt cheap for a race car. As for the Biden thing, to each their own.

My suggestion would be to get active on:

www.ls1tech.com
www.firebirdnation.com

Both those forums have for sale sections where you can get an idea of what commands what price. I haven't purchased any classic muscle in a long time so my view of what is worth what and what is sought after could be wildly off. They'll also be able to point to the current desired racing mods. Again I'm not current. I put a procharger on my LS1 'Bird but my understanding is that has fallen out of favor in favor of other forced induction. Try to get some company to throw in some free parts, a discount on parts, or something like that. Getting some money off at Holley or something special from them with a Biden stamped part will command more premium than it being touch by Biden.

Memphis is a bigger metro area than Nashville and covers West TN, AR, MS and LA.

GreatGlavinsGhost: kumanoki: Coming up...Antiques Roadshow, Austin, followed by Antiques Roadshow, Baltimore. Then, a special Presidential edition Antiques Roadshow, Philadelphia.

SaraDiddle and Kumanoki's Over Halfway Bare Knuckle Melee Hump Day Foray into the TwitterBomb Cache, OK?
Twitterbomb schedule for Wednesday, October 24th (All tweets are EST)

PBS Newshour - @newshour
4:00pm-5:00pm

I suggested in another thread that we try to target the sports-watching community. The World Series starts tonight at 5:07pm (PT). It is scheduled at the same time for the 25th, 27th, 28th, 29th and 31st.

Perhaps we can tweet players/teams right around the 7th innings stretch?

Good idea...or would our tweets get lost in the crowd?

Maybe, but I would think there'd be a lot of eyes to see it. Maybe we can come up with some tweets specific to the particular sport?

Sylvia_Bandersnatch: WalMartian: We need to find a way to kick this in the butt; interest seems to be waning.

THIS.
