A note from Unfreakable:

I don't really look at this as a Democrat thing or a Republican thing or a political thing, I consider this an Internet thing. The same as when Fark helped send a crowbar and a Half-Life strategy manual to the scientist at the LHC that looked like Gordon Freeman in one of the publicity photos.

A lot of people are saying, "Hey, he can afford to buy his own car!" Of course he can. This isn't about helping Joe because he can't afford a car, it's about making a silly Internet meme become reality, and also to help some charities. If you really want to discuss politics, I'd ask that you go over to the politics tab; there are a lot of current stories there that you can discuss. This one is about having fun and doing something neat. If you don't want to join in, you don't have to--that's your choice. I'd just ask that you find a different thread that's more to your liking.

To all of you Farkers that have helped in any way, whether it was contributing with money, or time, or organizing any of this, or helping share the word on your Facebook wall or tweeting it--YOU FREAKING ROCK. Thank you for what you've done, and hopefully what you'll continue to do. This is awesome and everybody who has had a hand in helping to set this up or keep the momentum going is fantastic. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

DO NOT WANT Poster Girl: Good morning all you good people.

Good morning!

I've been getting a lot of attention for GJTB on Twitter. I've had responses from someone at an urban affiliate for FoxNews. My followers have jumped from a few close friends to over 100 GJTB followers.

I took a little 'me time' this weekend, but I am ready to tweet the Fark out of everyone I can today!

As said in other GJTB threads, I admire you people.

I piss on those who find this effort meaningless, or view it through partisan lenses.

This is a humorous, meme-y way to leave the world a little better than you found it. And that, my brothers and sisters, is the meaning of life. There, I've settled the age-old question for you where philosophers have failed.

I'd also like to remind everyone that charity is a lifelong commitment, and I hope your generosity will extend to non-Trans-Am-related concerns. I'm not rich, either. But it's the least we can do.

So, the whole thing here is you can't actually give him the car because of his position as Vice President, but what if he hypothetically doesn't get re-elected (hey, there's still hope for Gary Johnson to win, right? right?)? I guess the nice thing to do would still be to auction the car off, but you could legally give it to him after that, right?

Alternatively, how cool would it be if Biden went all out and bought the car in the auction, with his own money?

I haven't donated yet. I don't like that some of the money is going to GLAAD (not because I have anything against gay people, but I don't think GLAAD is addressing a pressing enough issue that they need my money).

Anyhow, I think for things that support multiple charities like this, donors should be presented with some checkboxes saying where their share of the money should go. I'd gladly donate to the other 3 charities.

He'd still be Vice President until January 20, so there would be plenty of time to arrange not giving it to him.

I can understand that. We've blanketed donations across several charities to give donators the opportunity to give to one of the charities that they prefer. If this doesn't suit you, you can always make a charitable donation to the ones you prefer individually. Here are the links:

Okay, team- just a quick note on the donations. I know you're just as excited as I am to see the donations climb when you look at the Indiegogo site. it's cool to see the chart that shows our progress, and no one can dispute the fact that this cause raised over half of its expected goal in a week. I think that's one giant Eff Ewe to the haters, and maybe why we haven't been seeing the volume of thread-shiatters today.

However, I don't want you to get discouraged if the pace of the donations slow. There are some perfectly valid reasons why that could happen. Most of us are between pay periods, or broke. We've seen exponential growth, but that may not continue. It may take time for national attention to bury its way into the thick skulls of Steve Taxpayer. Etc.

If that happens, ignore the data haters. Do not get discouraged. Consider that donations will flow and ebb based on the unseen forces of economics. We are going to make this work. We are going to attain our goal. Just don't get uptight if it doesn't happen as fast as you want it to.

I'd love to get some help out there, and I know we've got more people tweeting that just the few listed daily in the threads. I think we need this to get some national attention to push us over the hump, but that can take time.

A note from The Link:

All the while, Joe Biden has calmly and quietly been an incredible Vice President. He was one of the first politicians to publicly embrace gay marriage and may have been personally responsible for President Obama coming out in favor of gay marriage and the subsequent change in the Democratic Party's platform. He is also a stunningly intelligent politician who understands the nuance of foreign and domestic policy. He is also not afraid to show disdain for factually deficient arguments.

Just wrote a couple of comments in the last thread. Here is the main one:

RichieLaw: Tellingthem: vander7194: vygramul: vander7194: I have a remarkably dumb question, and hopefully you'll forgive it. I understand what you are doing and why, but isn't there a chance the car, when auctioned off, would bring less than the $25,000 (or however much) raised? Wouldn't it be better to just giver the money directly to the charity? I know it's not as fun that way, but still.....

First off, the car's not going to cost $25 grand. Second, that's what a reserve price is for.

Yeah, I am familiar with reserve prices. If it wasn't met, what then? I've seen many auctions where the reserve isn't met.

Auctioning things off for charity is nothing new. I have participated in them before. Basically a lot will depend on how much publicity we get. The more publicity usually equals a higher sale price. And more publicity also equals a better auction. Some people have been looking into the Barrett-Jackson auction for example. They are a nationally televised auction known for muscle cars and charity auctions. And if we can get in that one that would put it in a top-tier auction. And the odds that the car would make much more money there are high. However that may not happen. But there are always others options as well that people are looking at. It sounds like you are just looking for specifics but (to my knowledge) they have not been finalized yet. As things progress I'm sure more specific details will come. But to try to answer your question: Is it possible that the car will not get a high auction price? yes. Is it possible that the car will make much more money at auction? yes.

Another thing to remember is that this is not a professional charity that has spent months organizing this single event. This came from the initial idea to this point in about a week. It is something that is getting more refined everyday. If you are not comfortable donating to this right now you can wait for more details to come. Or you can simply cut us out and donate directly to the charities themsel ...

This thing will all come down to a cost-benefit analysis at the end of the campaign. The goal will be to determine what is going to help the charities the most. If we get more media attention and find a car in perfect condition at a reasonable price, then we will try to go through the auction. The auction doesn't work without the media attention, possibly Joe Biden giving us a "WHAT UP" and finding a mint condition awesome looking car.

If it is determined that an auction is not reasonable, i.e. we will not be able to make a net profit on the auctioning of the vehicle, as well as purchase the vehicle as a contingency to a successful sale at auction, the monies contributed will be donated directly to the charities minus expenses for perks and any tax obligation that I may owe.

Couple more things:

1. Everyone has done a great job! It seems that the pace of donations really slow down on Fri-Sunday. I am going to advocate that everyone take off from doing anything GJTB related during that time so that we do not get burnt out or yelled at by our SO's. We can hit it hard on Monday through Thursday (or even Monday through Wednesday) and then relax and rest. We still have a long time to campaign.

This also explains my recent absence as I've been terribly busy getting caught up at work and with life. I really do not have the time to spend 22 hours a day on this, as fun and awesome as it is.

2. I think we should finalize the Holy T-Shirt of Fark for the perks. I am okay with either of those designs. I do not think we have to worry about copyright as we are doing this all for charity. Fair use and all that. Worse comes to worse we will get a cease and desist letter which I can respond to if needed. Once this is done that will finalize the perks and we can just keep on, keeping on.

3. Thread submittal. I am thinking that we only need a new thread maybe twice a week, or unless it gets over 1000 comments. I do not want to spam the Fark queue unnecessarily. Especially because I want to do a huge social media bombing run the last week of the campaign.

4. I have still not heard back from 3 of our 4 charities. Will continue to monitor.

Hope this helps! I know that I have some emails from Farkers that I need to respond to. I will try do that as soon as possible!

Cheers.

The whole "he can't accept it" thing is a myth. The law and ethics rules make that quite clear. This is not an attempt to purchase influence, nor does it come from any group that's prohibited from giving gifts to politicians. It doesn't even have the appearance of impropriety.

It would be very cool if Biden bought the car.
