You know what makes me weep for this country? The fact that I just had someone who is under 30 try to defend George Wallace and Claude Kirk's segregationist asses to me on facebook. And call me the intolerant one.

They were good men and it was a different time. And how dare you be judging people who are dead. And they weren't really virulent segregationists. And bringing up the fact that my mom was there when Claude Kirk dissolved the school board in one Florida county to prevent integration only means that my mom was the libbiest liberal who ever lived for thinking he was a horrible guy.

And all this because I related the anecdote about how I learned from my parents crossing party lines to vote against Claude Kirk for education commissioner that standing up for equality is more important than the letter next to someone's name.

I'm pretty OCD. I organize a lot of things by colors....book spines on the shelf, dress shirts in my closet, and socks in my drawer. I can see how segregation would be appealing to Wallace and Kirk's. Why wouldn't I want to group my student bodies by colors?

If Kirk ever saw the error of his ways he never said anything about it. Florida's approach to the entire era is to just not talk about it and try to pretend it didn't happen in hopes that everybody forgets that they were just as bad as Alabama or Mississippi.

propasaurus: How many times has "Sarah Palin topless" been Googled? Or "Romney's dancing horse"? Or "Obama's birth certificate"?

Anyway, I don't think people are searching for Ryan beefcake pics because he's just such a hottie that legions of repressed Republican housewives (and closeted Republican husbands) are tapping to those P90X pecs. More likely because he's such a farking tool.

/point & laugh

Question is if people are pointing and laughing at him because he's a tool, or because someone on the internet said he is to be pointed and laughed at.
If no ones gone to the trouble of digging up information for themselves, you have to suspect the latter and weep for our future.

log_jammin: whidbey: Well I guess i just expected a lot more "WTF?" over Romney. Apparently, it's more like "oh cool, someone who really CAN run this country like a business. We need that. Everything's about money. Everything. And good derp to you, Citizen."

There's a lot of "WTF?" over Romney. While watching a news piece over the debates, and just how horrible Obama is, my dad got angrier and angrier before standing up and saying "It's like that book 1984" and storming out. This was from a man who has dropped the n word as often as he says the word damn for the past 65 years, and he voted for Obama in 08 and will again this year. the republicans have gotten so crazy they made a racist not just vote for, but proudly vote for, a black guy.

Now my best friends wife who is a die hard conservative with tons of Romney signs in their yard was upset last summer when she couldn't find a QRay wellness bracelet at the bass pro shop. see her cousin said it cured his leg pain, so it must work.

I think Romney really broke some Republicans. The enthusiasm gap around here (Southeastern Michigan, Downriver) is amusing: I didn't see a single Romney/Ryan sign until after the first debate, but that's it. Most of the billboards around the Metro Detroit area pushing the whole 'do you support abortion and birth control' signs died out around July and August. The local news media is defending the right-wing as best it can, but on the whole the Republicans have given up early this time around. I don't really see anybody backing Romney as much as they're throwing out half-hearted support and hoping/'praying for the best.'

On the whole, it doesn't come off as disappointment as much as it's finding a rationale to continue being angry and bitter towards anybody but Romney. I think that's one of the reasons why the media is trying to make this a horserace: an Obama win would give the right-wingers a chance to be angry again, somehow renewing their enthusiasm and pushing through four more years of more insults, more rage, more everything. Then again, look what this constant angerfest from 2009 (and 2011, when it kicked up a notch) has done: most Republicans are burnt out.

When I was visiting Cleveland, I saw a whooooollle bunch of "Vote AGAINST Obama" billboards of varying stripes. None got overtly racist, but apparently Pennsyltucky has that covered- a friend passing through the area mentioned seeing plenty of "Take back the WHITE House" signs.

Soon it will be "Wallace and Kirk fought for the rights of black children to attend segregated schools. Democrats wanted to keep segregation in place. Black people should be thankful for Wallace and Kirk." And they will pull out quotes from conservative racist Dixiecrats as proof.

whidbey: Gyrfalcon: whidbey: Doesn't make me weep, but it is annoying that Obama is neck in neck in the polls with the people's forgotten memories about how much the Republican party farked this country up from 2001 to the present.

That's because you still think people are smart and sane.

The odds appear to be 50/50.

Not sure if that's a full or half-empty glass.

I doubt it is as high as 50/50 - some Democrat voters will be just as brainless, they have just been conditioned to heedlessly follow the party that happens to still be in the range of sane politics, but only by coincidence. Very hard not to write off all Republican voters though, a few years into Bush II the Republican party should have been completely dead politically.

Wisconsin is the drunkest state. Milwaukee the drunkest city. Scott Walker and Paul Ryan are both from that general area. It is not only possible that they have alcohol fetal syndrome, it's likely. Lots of kids around the Milwaukee and Fox Valley areas do. Why not them? Walker and Ryan both have the same general look the white girl in the upper left hand picture has.

Here's the original source that Gawker is parsing. The most interesting finding was that the most popular google searches that combined Obama's name with another term in the states where Obama is losing by double digits was "Obama n*gger" and/or "Obama KKK". So just remember it's not about race, it's policy.

Even better, if RRepublicans win, we can depend on their "small" government to get us 12 million jobs! Because as Mitt says, shortly after he says as POTUS he'll create 12 million jobs: "Government doesn't create jobs!" You see, this pledge to create jobs has a diffeRent meaning when RRepubs make it. Obama says he'll help create manufacturing jobs by removing corporate tax incentives to outsource jobs: he means government jobs, you see. Uh-huh.
