I would have gone with "octopuses", since "octopodes" is usually listed even after the hypercorrect "octopi" in some dictionaries, and not at all in other dictionaries. According to Fowler "octopuses" the only correct pluralization.

"Octopuses" is best, but "octopodes" is the most reasonable if-you-insist-on-foreigning-it pluralization. "Octopi" is less hyper-correct than just completely wrongheaded. "Octopussies" was briefly considered correct in the 1980s (esp. in Great Britain) but is obsolescent.

"Pluralization" is a word now?

Yes. It's the nominalization, or noun form, of the transitive verb "pluralize". The British spell it pluralisation.

So when Nadia Libiamajoreyesorus queefs in the woods, does a horde of felines run rampant toward the resulting fishnamie?

Good luck to the little octos. Very few will survive to adulthood, even when hatched in an aquarium. The Vancouver Aquarium hatched a brood of a few hundred, and even without predators only a dozen or so survived the first month.

No aquarium has ever raised a hatchling octo to adulthood.

But has it been tried at an aquarium that doesn't have a snack bar?

Internet high five from the octopus porn thread from the other day.

(A sequence of words that ought not to make any sense...)

Personally, I prefer using the most understandable term, which in this case would be octopuses.

Aping ancient languages doesn't really aid communication.

Warning; incoming cool story bro:

Many moons ago; my mother and I were eating lunch at a high faluting resturaunt in a large city that shall remain nameless. The resturaunt was set up as a buffet; and they gave you a red and green coaster. If the green side was up; that ment you were going to the 'salad bar'. Red ment you wanted meat; there were guys running around with meat impailed on swords. We went up to the salad bar; all it had was weird, unappetizing food. Mom pointed at a potato like food and said, "look, potatoes"; by this point we would have excepted any regular food. I said, "potatoes don't have suckers."

/ the service was slow; I suggested winging a waiter with the coaster to get the check

"The Oxford English Dictionary[8] lists octopuses, octopi and octopodes (in that order); it labels octopodes "rare", and notes that octopi derives from the mistaken assumption that octōpūs is a second declension Latin noun, which it is not. Rather, it is (Latinized) Ancient Greek, from oktṓpous (ὀκτώπους), gender masculine, whose plural is oktṓpodes (ὀκτώποδες). If the word were native to Latin, it would be octōpēs ('eight-foot') and the plural octōpedes"

It makes me sad that the OED has included "octopi". "Bling-bling" and "doh" were signs of declining standards in that publication.
