Hero tag strangely absent. A great man, especially for a career politician. America - what the hell were you thinking in 72?

Another decent guy who devoted a life to getting beat up in politics.

Stupid way of life.

Lost in a landslide to Nixon. Further evidence that when The People speak, it is all too often in some dialect of derp. What a lost opportunity.

Good night, courageous man. You were good to us, even when we weren't good to you.

I wouldn't know much of McGovern since he was before my time, but thanks to Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail I feel like I am intimately connected with the election of 72' and a bit saddened at McGovern's passing. R.I.P.

sadbad: Hero tag strangely absent. A great man, especially for a career politician. America - what the hell were you thinking in 72?

Nixon was, in spite of his boundless paranoia which turned out to be his fatal flaw, one of the best Presidents we ever had. McGovern never had a chance, which makes Watergate all the more sad because it need never have happened.

All the same, McGovern was a good man. Then again, so was Adlai Stevenson and lots of others who lost Presidential elections.

That the Soviets were a threat and feeding them would be a mistake.

Everybody agrees he's a nice guy. Bad ideas but a nice guy. Jimmy Carter without the audience.

The last honest man has gone home. Rest in peace, Senator.

"The tragedy of all this is that George McGovern....is one of the few men who've run for President of the United States in this century who really understands what a fantastic monument to all the best instincts of the human race this country might have been, if we could have kept it out of the hands of greedy little hustlers like Richard Nixon." - Hunter S. Thompson

I was in France on a high school trip when we heard McGovern had been nominated. One of the girls jumped up on a table and did an impromptu dance. She was writing a musical version of Phantom of the Opera, which I thought was the stupidest idea I'd ever heard. I still remember the first verse, though:

"Oh I am the Phantom of the Opera
I'm really a very funny guy..."

Get off my lawn.

Nixon was a crooked, nasty bunghole from day one.

I'll say this about McGovern, EZ, when he deigned, personally, to wage war, it was against qualified opposition!

Who was the last Republican POTUS to win any medal in combat? Nixon?

I asked a question a couple of years ago, and I ask it again: where are the great Liberals like McGovern in 21st century America, because I sure don't see them.

I was in the third grade during the '72 election. I rode the bus to and from school and I was always the last kid on the bus. During that election, when I was the only kid on the bus, the bus driver would talk to me about George McGovern and how horrible Nixon was. Good memories. Some place I still have a McGovern/Eagleton button that he gave me.

Another of the last great, truly liberal politicians is gone.

The Democratic Party is pretty much becoming the center-right party in this country. And, since there's only two parties, that makes them still seem like the liberal party.

Most people aren't actively evil. Even Obama isn't. He's just deluded and prone to the sin of vainglory and wrath. However a lot of people need to be good so their enemies become evil.

1) No

2) Define evil. I hope it is something better than "someone I disagree with or does something I think is stupid"
