xaks: ClavellBCMI: davidphogan: Yay bye week! Don't blow it Norv. Seriously. Don't fark up a bye.

The Chargers already did. They are being investigated for using a variant of Stick-Um in last week's game (the equipment manager couldn't hide the towels he used to wipe the Stick-Um off the used footballs before the game officials spotted it and confiscated the towels).

You're farking kidding me.

RIGHT? You aren't actually serious here. Please tell me you aren't. (Note: I had a hella busy week and California could have slid off the continental shelf into the pacific and I wouldn't have heard about it until yesterday, so its entirely possible I just missed this)

They aren't THAT desperate out in SD already, are they?

They brought this up on the Fox pre-game show, and not during the (intended) comedy segment.

Also, I think I might need copious amounts of beer to deal with the Jaguars getting their asses handed to them by the Raiders later. I gotta get someone to drive me to the sports bar...

Maybe it helps get Norv out faster, but I'm hoping ownership gives him a longterm contract extension.

All of that but also, that must be the worst stickum ever. Did they only use it in the second half?

I only get feeds from firstrow, so...I usually end up with an ESPN America feed being the best picture. Can't say much about Fox as I get that OTA in HD.

2012-10-21 12:49:49 PM
Coming off a dismal 6-8 performance in Week 6, my first only losing record of the 2012 campaign, the season mark stands at 54-36. Well, much like Philip Rivers my year has now hit its low-water point, and there's nowhere left to go but up. With this guarded optimism, I ceremoniously dunk my head in the bucket of urine and charge ahead with my picks, with winners in bold, as always:

Tennessee Titans at Buffalo Bills:
Color me unconvinced that either of these teams have turned anything around after surprising victories last weekend. The Titans and Bills rank 32nd and 31st in the league, respectively, in points allowed through 6 weeks and neither has shown the ability to score points of their own with any consistency. My thinking here is that Buffalo does have a strong running game, anchored by C.J. Spiller (who currently ranks 10th in rushing yardage despite having at least 27 fewer carries than any of the backs ahead of him), while the Titans have Chris Johnson. CJ2+yearsago does get a bit of hope this week going up against the Bills' 32nd-ranked run defense, but Tennessee's D is only 24th vs the run. I suppose both teams might try to throw the ball a couple times each, too.

Dallas Cowboys at Carolina Panthers:
Fun fact: only two NFC teams have failed to break the 100-point scoring barrier this season, and here they both are playing each other. The difference-makers here are that Cam Newton has regressed across the board during his sophomore season and Dallas somewhat surprisingly boasts the league's top pass defense. If Tony Romo can avoid a repeat of his Week 4 performance against Chicago then there is no way the Cowboys should lose this game.

Baltimore Ravens at Houston Texans:
Okay, let's get this out of the way: my primary reason for picking the Ravens here is that I am, of course, a Baltimoron. With Baltimore's already-depleted defense now reeling due to injuries there aren't many other reasons to expect a win here, even after the Texans were embarrassed by Green Bay at home last Sunday. Even without Brian Cushing, Houston's defense is still strong (much stronger than Baltimore's so far), and a Ravens defense which has struggled to stop the run will have its hands full against Arian Foster. But as a fan of the purple & black, I have to keep my faith that Joe Flacco can lead this team to victory...oh, crap; I'll just be in the corner crying.

Cleveland Browns at Indianapolis Colts:
Cleveland got its win out of the way last weekend, leaving the Colts free to get back to .500 today. Oh, and here's another stat you might not be aware of: Indy currently boasts the #3 pass defense in the league, surrendering just 200 yards/game through the air. Andrew Luck, meanwhile, should have little difficulty against the Browns' 30th-ranked secondary.

Arizona Cardinals at Minnesota Vikings:
The John Skelton era resumes for Arizona as two of this season's most unexpectedly good (so far) teams square off. The Vikings put a perfect 3-0 home record on the line against the Cardinals, who have lost two straight after opening the season 4-0. While it's difficult to pick Christian Ponder to do anything against Arizona, it's not so tough to see Adrian Peterson getting enough done against their 19th-ranked run defense to send the Cards packing with their third consecutive loss.

Washington Redskins at New York Giants:
There's a little more logic behind my big upset pick this week than there was last Sunday. Much like the Seahawks above, the Giants are 0-2 within their division but 4-0 against everyone else, and Washington has not been intimidated against anyone this season: of their three losses, none have been by more than 7 points. Mostly, though, this pick is simply based on the historical fact that no team can ever create separation for themselves at the top of the NFC East, so this result (combined with the Cowboys win above) will restore things to their natural balance with only a half game separating all four teams.

Green Bay Packers at St. Louis Rams:
It was only one game, but boy did the Packers impress during those four quarters against Houston. And while the Rams have looked pretty solid themselves, particularly at home (3-0 this season), that flash of their 2011 selves makes it impossible to pick against Green Bay this week. I seriously doubt Aaron Rodgers throws another 6 touchdowns here (St. Louis has only allowed 4 TD passes all season), but if he can lead the Pack to 24 points it should be enough.

New Orleans Saints at Tampa Bay Buccaneers:
So I've been saying for a while now that the Bucs are a better team than most people think, but here I am picking against them in a home game against the 1-4 Saints? Very simple reasoning: Tampa ranks 31st against the pass so far, while New Orleans has (no shock here) the #1 passing offense in the league. Tampa Bay is indeed a fairly solid team overall, but this is just a matchup from hell for them.

New York Jets at New England Patriots:
So I saw that Rex Ryan was once again guaranteeing a victory here, but even without that added reasoning there was no way I was going to pick the Jets to win. The simple fact of the matter is that, especially without Darrelle Revis and Santonio Holmes, this New York squad is just not very good. The Patriots, however, despite unfamiliar losses to Arizona and Seattle, are a good team...well, at least on offense they are. Tom Brady will have no difficulty dicing this Revisless secondary, and even against the Pats' (lack of) pass defense there's no way Mark Sanchez keeps up.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Oakland Raiders:
Remember when I mentioned that the only two NFC teams with fewer than 100 total points this season where facing each other? Here's the only two teams in the AFC who've yet to hit the century mark. If anyone needs some perspective on just how bad Jacksonville's offense has been this year, Aaron Rodgers threw for as many touchdowns against Houston last week as the Jaguars have scored all season long. Cecil Shorts leads the Jags in receiving yards despite having caught only eight passes. Maurice Jones-Drew is the only player on the team with over 50 rushing yards. It's abysmal. The Raiders' offense has been no picnic, either, but Jacksonville's, coupled with their appalling defense, makes this pick a no-brainer.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals:
It's tough to pick either team to win this one, to be honest. Cincinnati comes in having lost consecutive games to Miami and Cleveland, while the Steelers are 2-3 overall and lost to Tennesee last week. It's only my (begrudging) respect for Pittsburgh and their historic ability to win games they have to win that makes me lean in their direction...and make no mistakes about it, even though it's only week 7 the Steelers have to win this game.

Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears:
While it's never wise to underestimate Jay Cutler's ability to choke away games, particularly on the heels of Philip Rivers' historic collapse last Monday night, I don't think even Captain Emo can lose this one. On the other side of the field, Matthew Stafford has taken a huge step backwards after posting breakthrough numbers for Detroit last season and the Bears, who come in tied for 4th with 18 sacks, should have little difficulty getting to him.

Bills are 3-3 and would be the 6th seed in the AFC if the season ended last week despite epic blowouts at the hands of the Jets, Pats, and the 49ers. They SHOULD win at home at enter into an easier phase of the schedule. So things are going as hoped in the most horrific and discouraging ways possible.

Well, I submitted one anyhow, at they were qualifying at 190mph+ on a re-paved surface instead of the usual sub-180mph, so we'll see, but I'm expecting a parade race. And GO VIKES! GO PACK! And J-E-S-T JOKES JOKES JOKES!
