I always thought it was you Americans submitting articles of ugly people with the "hot" headline joke that had the low standards.

I'm assuming this will suck, though it may depend on which Samuel L. Jackson they got for it. Whether or not it's the "always-look-like-a-badass-and-say-motherf*cker" Jackson or the one that is actually given a role to act.

At any rate, I highly doubt the ending stays the same.

Oh c'mon. You know Spike Lee is going to bring the light touch and nuance his movies have become known for! I expect his treatment of Oldboy will be as delicate as the hallway hammer fight...

Yes, and that looks to be a good thing, from where I sit.

/that he's making a remake of a ten year-old Korean film is a testament to where Spike Lee's career is at this point.

Gah I had forgotten about an Old Boy remake on the horizon. I wasn't completely sold with Brolin in True Grit, the idea of an Americanized Old Boy just.... I can't see this ending well.

/preferred "I Saw the Devil" over Old Boy slightly.

//next they'll be calling two love handles a "2-pac"

Inside Man was good. I think he's better when he's not given free reign over every aspect of the production

The "original" Oldboy you're thinking of is a Koreanized version of a Japanese manga.

More importantly, Oldboy is being remade.

I like Spike Lee.

I like Josh Brolin.

I hate remakes.

I hate bafflingly unnecessary, ill-conceived remakes even more.

Oldboy and Robocop should come out on a double bill: "The Pointless Remakes by Shameless, Uncreative Cokemongers Double-Feature"

...and Spike hasn't been able to get a sequel made. He can't get money to make a sequel to a hit a movie with Denzel and Jodie.

Drexl's Eye: So was The 25th Hour, until the last ten minutes.

Apparently the problem was that the pretty boy actor who was supposed to play the role dropped out at the last minute and Ed Norton stepped in, making the whole concept of the book and its ending make no sense, as Norton is many things but not a pretty boy.

Malcolm X is well-done and accurate (it pissed off the Nation of Islam). It's the other film of his I'd highly recommend (though I haven't seen all of them).

He's really hit-or-miss as a director.

I may have to check it out sometime, but so far I have just never been in a Malcom X sort of mood.

What's the deal with the teeth on people from the UK? I keep hearing that they're awful but everyone I've met from over there have had good teeth. But I've never actually set foot in the country so maybe it's only the ones who don't travel or work abroad who have the wonky teeth?

THIS! Huh?! Seriously? They dropped that major bombshell from the movie?! This is why Hollywood shouldn't have nice things!

Also, Brolin is in great shape by any standard. Shiat, the dude is just standing outside a lot trailer, not even pumped for a scene or anything and looks solid and strong.

From what I understand the ending of the original movie was already very different from that of the source material, so I'll give that a pass for now.

I think it's because people who are used to bleached teeth think natural teeth look awful (cuz they're not snowy-white). Also, old cliches never die.

You have to be in the mood for a biopic, and I know that mode strikes me rarely enough.

Tobey Maguire was attached as a producer, so the other producers had a choice to either re-cast him or wait until he was done with the Spider-Man movies.

I think Norton was a better choice, because Maguire simply wouldn't have been believable as a drug dealer.

The only problem with that movie, as the other poster mentioned, is that the 10-minute Brian Cox monologue/dream sequence felt unnecessary and like it was trying to make the story deeper than it was.

They could have ended the movie with Norton just getting into Cox's car and driving off and it would have been just as good.

2012-10-22 05:23:41 PM
Ugh, they should NOT remake that film. Was fine as it is.

On the "six-pack" issue, OK blame the Daily Mail for having a limited vocabulary, but don't throw stones at Brolin - his character's supposed to have been locked up in a torture-cell for a decade or so - not a cover-model.
