This is nothing new. A vague statement saying they'll talk. We've heard it before and nothing has happened.

Yeah I mean its not like their currency is losing value at a fantastic rate because of the sanctions or anything. I mean even if it was, that wouldn't put any kind of pressure on their government at all or anything.

non story here libs, move on.

Nah, they just know that of Romney wins he's going to do whatever Netanyahu wants him to do.

And Bibi wants ONE thing: BOMB IRAN!!!

2012-10-20 08:48:52 PM
The White House has denied this.

NYT getting a big desperate.

Although I do like the idea that Iraq "wants" the talks after the election since even they aren't confident 0bama will win.

Yeah. They didn't want Carter in office but are happy with 0bama. Too funny.

They probably know that like Bush, no amount of evidence can keep him from invading an Islamic country to secure his re-election.

Not saying there's not a story here or that they are now serious, like fo' realz. But I won't believe their sincerity until they actually sit down and talk substantively. Is skepticism here out of line?

They say they're willing to talk...but wait...they're not really willing to talk now. No, they want to wait until after the US elections. What will their next excuse be? Yeah, we said we'd talk, but we'll only talk if you lift all the sanctions. Like they have said before.

I simply don't understand why you aren't skeptical. The Iranians timed this to influence the elections. They think Romney will be more likely to attack them and they know Obama will be less likely to.

setting the stage for what could be a last-ditch diplomatic effort to avert a military strike on Iran.

You know what, fark you, media. I remember the last time we did this, it was just a letter off. If farksticks want to march to war, at least make them provide their own drummer.

The US has not had direct diplomatic relations with Iran since 1980. We have been communicating to them via the Swiss Embassy in Tehran, and they with us via the Pakistani Embassy in D.C.

Reopening direct relations could only be a good thing, IMO.

Does Israel want Iran to have the bomb or something?

/invading Iran pretty much guarantees that they'll double down on their bomb-making efforts.

2012-10-20 09:49:01 PM
This is terrific. They can have a substantive chest-bumping on Monday over who Iran should be theoretically more afraid of.

Yeah, and Israel, "the sneaky nuke guys", have been screaming IRAN WILL HAVE THE BOMB BY NEXT TUESDAY every day of every week of that same generation, and doing their best to con the US into believing their lies - just like they (successfully) did with Iraq, working their asses off to get the US to attack Iran, just like they did with Iraq.

In the meantime, Israel occupies its time sabotaging Iran's facilities, planting viruses, assassinating their scientists, and using their "influence" to get the rest of the world to enforce crippling economic sanctions.

And Iran is the one that's posing an aggressive threat to Israel?

2012-10-20 10:30:31 PM
Does anyone really consider a nuclear armed Iran a major threat? They won't hit Israel because they're already well behind the curve, at worst it will provoke an arms race that Israel will inevitably win and the US can stay out of. As for warheads falling into the possession of terrorist groups, Pakistan is far scarier given the levels of government corruption and lax security.

MAD is still in play, any government that launches a nuclear attack will suffer the consequences and any warhead detonated by a terrorist group will be tracked to it's source ant the state held responsible.

Yeah, basically. They've played this game before, they have no credibility until they actually act.

2012-10-20 10:41:04 PM
You mean they're figuring out that North Korea's tactic of using voluntary surrender of nukes as a carrot and the threat of continued production as a stick might be cheaper and easier than building the damn things and then having to pay billions to have them sit there doing nothing but suck down money and slowly poison the poor bastards who have to maintain them?

Color me surprised.

Do you think that's a more productive foreign policy?

To be fair, Iran does provide a lot of the dough for Hezbollah and similar groups. It's worth noting that they aren't innocent victims.

Panicked, even.

Poor lad. Don't worry, Romney still has a chance!

2012-10-20 11:39:05 PM
ObamaSucks71 on the Obama Sucks is breaking news that these negotiations are just the beginning. According to the agreement, Taxbongo is going to yield sovereignty of the country to Iran so that the country can be added into the Electoral College. This way, if Romney wins all the swing states he needs to win, Iran cancels them out. And for what? You're going to give up the country to Ahmadinejad so you can win an election? Put politics aside for once, Barack, I beg of you. Do what is right for once, not what liberals want.

2012-10-20 11:39:16 PM
Here's how it will play out:

"OK, back off on the sanctions, give us $2 billion in aid and we'll stop enriching uranium. Alright?"

"OK, as long as you do that stuff you've promised"

6 months later. Sanctions lifted. Aid is flowing, Ahmadenijad has a new polyester sports coat. No uranium being enriched.

8 months later: Surprise! We moved the plant to shiatazz! hahahaha you stupid capitalists!

I feel that I have to remind people every time this discussion comes up:

Disapproving of the Israeli Government =/= Hating Jewish people

I don't care if they pray to Yahweh or Obi-Wan Kenobi, the actions and policies of Israel's government (especially the military) can and should be reprimanded without dragging the religious argument into it.

/protip: The Arab governments don't care about the religious angle, either. It's all about stopping the encroaching influence of American power into the region, which threatens to destabilize bad governments (see: Arab Spring)
//Religion is how you sell it to your exploited citizenry so they don't pay attention to your failings

2012-10-20 11:45:11 PM
Now we wait for the inevitable (R)'s to start the "Obama is negotiating with terrorists!?!?!" whargarrble
And/or "Obama doesn't have any Foreign Policy because he won't meet with Iran." That is the
point we are at with this idiotic two part system..There is no third group to call "BULLPUCKY"
on this kind crap..The media is too indebted and cozy to make that call on either party without
making a case for the other parties argument, no matter how small of a grain of truth it may contain.
