vander7194: vygramul: vander7194: I have a remarkably dumb question, and hopefully you'll forgive it. I understand what you are doing and why, but isn't there a chance the car, when auctioned off, would bring less than the $25,000 (or however much) raised? Wouldn't it be better to just giver the money directly to the charity? I know it's not as fun that way, but still.....

First off, the car's not going to cost $25 grand. Second, that's what a reserve price is for.

Yeah, I am familiar with reserve prices. If it wasn't met, what then? I've seen many auctions where the reserve isn't met.

Auctioning things off for charity is nothing new. I have participated in them before. Basically a lot will depend on how much publicity we get. The more publicity usually equals a higher sale price. And more publicity also equals a better auction. Some people have been looking into the Barrett-Jackson auction for example. They are a nationally televised auction known for muscle cars and charity auctions. And if we can get in that one that would put it in a top-tier auction. And the odds that the car would make much more money there are high. However that may not happen. But there are always others options as well that people are looking at. It sounds like you are just looking for specifics but (to my knowledge) they have not been finalized yet. As things progress I'm sure more specific details will come. But to try to answer your question: Is it possible that the car will not get a high auction price? yes. Is it possible that the car will make much more money at auction? yes.

Another thing to remember is that this is not a professional charity that has spent months organizing this single event. This came from the initial idea to this point in about a week. It is something that is getting more refined everyday. If you are not comfortable donating to this right now you can wait for more details to come. Or you can simply cut us out and donate directly to the charities themselves.

I guess what I'm saying is to try and be a little patient here. Everyone is doing their best to try and make this as successful as possible and to raise as much money as possible.

\take this with a grain of salt because I'm simply helping out. The people who started/running this may differ on a few points. I am not speaking for anyone or anything just as myself

Howdy. I have couple minutes and wanted to pop in. I see we're targeting (mostly) comedians/comic actors.

I just realized that, in all if our tweet-list-making, we've failed to identify a VERY obvious target:

Daniel Tosh

He's funny, he has 6.9 MILLION followers on the Tweet Machine and he has a show that is focused solely on stuff from the Internet.

Sarah, would you consider adding him to the Tweet schedule for tomorrow? He's a west coast guy, so if he were added to the end of the schedule @ 7-8 PM EDT, that'd be 4-5 PDT.

What do you think, Sarah? Others?

I'm okay with adding Daniel Tosh in. So Great Glavin's Ghost if you could amend the schedule in your huge post to add Daniel Tosh to the Twitterbomb from 7-8 tomorrow, I'd appreciate it!

I am heading to Publix so I can SHOUT at all the fools who think adding 2 of their own dollars to their grocery bill is gonna do jack to cure breast cancer. They sell FOOD, they have no business exploring interesting ways to expose a charity to a huge donor pool that values convenience. So stupid. Let breast cancer buy it's own damn car!

rugby-n-beers: fearmongert: legalgus: Why do you continue to post this Biden crap? First off, most charities do not want an overpriced used firebird. Second, they can use direct cash contributions. Third, Biden is a fat cat jerk of the first order.

It's NOT Biden crap.... it is a charitable fundraiser that MIGHT involve Biden someday... kinda like a bikini carwash, or the old style "How many people can we fit in a Volkswagon?" fundraisers done earlier... Make a meme real for charitable causes... Please don't be dense... There are $14,000 in REAL funds that are going to be given to REAL charities!.. To help REAL people and organizations....How can you hate that?

So are you guys donating the money straight to charity now, or still going through with the whole "buy a car, pay a grand or 2 in sales tax, then auction it off, possibly for less money than it was purchased for" thing?

* clears throat *

Silence in the classroom please....

a. if we don't reach our goal, whatever money we DO receive gets split equally among the four charities.

b. If we DO reach our goal, we're going to buy the Trans Am, HOPEFULLY (and this may be wishful thinking,
but with enough public support behind it, I think we can make it happen) get Biden and the car to mug for
the cameras together.

THEN we'll auction the car off - the thought being that the publicity generated and the fact that it's "Joe's
car" will bring in a higher bid than the car might otherwise be worth. Whatever we receive for the car
(less auction fees, etc...) will be split evenly among the four charities

c. None of us are receiving any compensation for our time and efforts. We're doing it solely for charity, for
the lulz, and for the chance to bring an internet meme to life

OK class... resume spitwad throwing...

We are trying to find the best way to do something good. At this time of year especially at this time of year there are lots of fundraisers. Charities are having to find different ways to compete for people's hard-earned donations.

Yes, it started as a joke, but it quickly became something that could be fun and helpful. What we're hoping is that Mr. Biden will pose with the car (or some other way to uniquely identify it as "the internet meme car for charity" like sign it, for instance), then when it goes up for auction the asking price will be much, much more than if everyone just sent money separately.

Regardless if the auction doesn't hit six figures, four very worthwhile charities will be getting donations and a few people will have spent their time doing something useful.

The *car* isn't going directly to charity. If we raise enough funds, we'll buy the car and auction it
off - all of the proceeds of which will go directly to those charities.

If we DON'T raise enough, then whatever we DO raise will be split evenly and will go directly to
those charities.

WIN / WIN

I truly believe we will either hit our goal, and then decide it, or we will NOT hit the goal, and as promised, it goes STRAIGHT to the charities....

It hasn't failed.. we have $14,000.00 going to four worthwhile charities... how can THAT be called a FAIL?...
also, someone contacted the Give Joe a Bird thread about the soup kitchen Ryan fiasco, and it raised over $10,000 for them through Farks efforts.... Stupid is as stupid does, but there are some REAL LIFE ramifications here.... Don't be a downer....
