A note from Unfreakable:

I don't really look at this as a Democrat thing or a Republican thing or a political thing, I consider this an Internet thing. The same as when Fark helped send a crowbar and a Half-Life strategy manual to the scientist at the LHC that looked like Gordon Freeman in one of the publicity photos.

A lot of people are saying, "Hey, he can afford to buy his own car!" Of course he can. This isn't about helping Joe because he can't afford a car, it's about making a silly Internet meme become reality, and also to help some charities. If you really want to discuss politics, I'd ask that you go over to the politics tab; there are a lot of current stories there that you can discuss. This one is about having fun and doing something neat. If you don't want to join in, you don't have to--that's your choice. I'd just ask that you find a different thread that's more to your liking.

To all of you Farkers that have helped in any way, whether it was contributing with money, or time, or organizing any of this, or helping share the word on your Facebook wall or tweeting it--YOU FREAKING ROCK. Thank you for what you've done, and hopefully what you'll continue to do. This is awesome and everybody who has had a hand in helping to set this up or keep the momentum going is fantastic. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

It hasn't failed.. we have $14,000.00 going to four worthwhile charities... how can THAT be called a FAIL?...
also, someone contacted the Give Joe a Bird thread about the soup kitchen Ryan fiasco, and it raised over $10,000 for them through Farks efforts.... Stupid is as stupid does, but there are some REAL LIFE ramifications here.... Don't be a downer....

I'd like to meet the gigantous biggus dickus that is holding a gun to their head and FORCING them to click on this link out of the HUNDREDS, nay THOUSANDS of other links on Fark they could go to.

Some people just want to try to shiat on a cookie, no matter what.

You are too late. Even if we don't raise another red cent we still have raised fourteen large for four great charities.

I can't fathom the mindset that leads to the desire for other people to fail at helping people out. I amhonestly sad for you.

because he/she/it is too lazy to find out what we're really doing. They can go over there with the rest, get a nametag, and have a cookie.

I truly believe we will either hit our goal, and then decide it, or we will NOT hit the goal, and as promised, it goes STRAIGHT to the charities....

They said in the FAQ (that's been on the link since day 1) that if they don't reach the goal, they'll split the money equally among the 4 charities.

If they do raise the money, I'm not sure. I think the car shouldn't be sold until after the election. Then Joe could take it for a quick cruise, or (god willing) wash it and take pics, and not worry about political fallout.

I think the level of famethey can attach to the car, and the value it adds, is what matters. If I were in charge of any major Internet based company, I would give them more than they paid for it. It's charitable, giving you lots of PR, and it's totally ridiculous.

/it annoys me that SuperPACs are OK, but driving a trans am for a month for charity is completely off-limits.

legalgus: Why do you continue to post this Biden crap? First off, most charities do not want an overpriced used firebird. Second, they can use direct cash contributions. Third, Biden is a fat cat jerk of the first order.

The *car* isn't going directly to charity. If we raise enough funds, we'll buy the car and auction it
off - all of the proceeds of which will go directly to those charities.

If we DON'T raise enough, then whatever we DO raise will be split evenly and will go directly to
those charities.

WIN / WIN

It's NOT Biden crap.... it is a charitable fundraiser that MIGHT involve Biden someday... kinda like a bikini carwash, or the old style "How many people can we fit in a Volkswagon?" fundraisers done earlier... Make a meme real for charitable causes... Please don't be dense... There are $14,000 in REAL funds that are going to be given to REAL charities!.. To help REAL people and organizations....How can you hate that?

So are you guys donating the money straight to charity now, or still going through with the whole "buy a car, pay a grand or 2 in sales tax, then auction it off, possibly for less money than it was purchased for" thing?

We are trying to find the best way to do something good. At this time of year especially at this time of year there are lots of fundraisers. Charities are having to find different ways to compete for people's hard-earned donations.

Yes, it started as a joke, but it quickly became something that could be fun and helpful. What we're hoping is that Mr. Biden will pose with the car (or some other way to uniquely identify it as "the internet meme car for charity" like sign it, for instance), then when it goes up for auction the asking price will be much, much more than if everyone just sent money separately.

Regardless if the auction doesn't hit six figures, four very worthwhile charities will be getting donations and a few people will have spent their time doing something useful.

* clears throat *

Silence in the classroom please....

a. if we don't reach our goal, whatever money we DO receive gets split equally among the four charities.

b. If we DO reach our goal, we're going to buy the Trans Am, HOPEFULLY (and this may be wishful thinking,
but with enough public support behind it, I think we can make it happen) get Biden and the car to mug for
the cameras together.

THEN we'll auction the car off - the thought being that the publicity generated and the fact that it's "Joe's
car" will bring in a higher bid than the car might otherwise be worth. Whatever we receive for the car
(less auction fees, etc...) will be split evenly among the four charities

c. None of us are receiving any compensation for our time and efforts. We're doing it solely for charity, for
the lulz, and for the chance to bring an internet meme to life

1) It's a reference to an Onion article about a shirtless Joe Biden washing his Trans Am in the Whitehouse driveway.
2) We're hoping we can get Biden to take a pic with it or something, but he's not getting the car. So we're not really buying it for him.
3) The charities will get the money. Joe Biden can act as a force-multiplier by making the Onion article true and really making some money for the charities. But no matter how you slice it, the money is going to charity.

I just realized that, in all if our tweet-list-making, we've failed to identify a VERY obvious target:

Daniel Tosh

He's funny, he has 6.9 MILLION followers on the Tweet Machine and he has a show that is focused solely on stuff from the Internet.

Sarah, would you consider adding him to the Tweet schedule for tomorrow? He's a west coast guy, so if he were added to the end of the schedule @ 7-8 PM EDT, that'd be 4-5 PDT.

While some Farkers may have a bone to pick with him over an incident that happened over the summer, and I am in no way defending what he said, if we can get 1 - just 1 - RT re: GJTB out of him, that reaches 6.9 million tweeters/twitterers/twatters.

He has featured silly stunts like GJTB on his show, which is currently in a taping schedule. If he were to feature GJTB on Tosh.0 in a "please help the kind folks at GJTB out by donating" light, think of the good it will do.

All this can come from one guy.

Also, not previously having been aware of the whole rape joke fiasco because it happened while I was in the field for two weeks at the time, I decided to check into it and found this short article from Time Magazine about it.

Not sure if this was much ado about nothing or not. I don't really care, nor do I think it matters or is germane. especially since the tweets got out on Twitter, not Fark.

I think it's worth doing.

Why I'm Here

1. As a veteran of our recent adventures in the Middle East, I'm here to support the Wounded Warrior Project.

2. As the brother of a gay man, I'm here to support GLAAD.

3. As someone who has seen the good work done by them first-hand in some amazingly inhospitable conditions, I'm here to support Doctors Without Borders.

4. As a friend of two wonderful women who have died from breast cancer, I'm here to support the Biden Breast Health Initiative.

5. As a human being who believes in the idea if helping his fellow man and woman, I'm here for all of these causes.

6. As a denizen of the Intarwebs and a Farker who LOVES the Uncle Joe/Trans Am meme, I'm here for the lulz.

Everyone has there reasons for being part of what we are trying to make happen with this silly, ridiculous endeavor.

If someone doesn't have the kinds of emotional and direct ties to the chosen charities that I have, that's OK.

I do, however feel a little sad for anyone who can't get into this for reason #5, or craps on others for what appears to solely be a desire to take the enjoyment out of #6.

I have a remarkably dumb question, and hopefully you'll forgive it. I understand what you are doing and why, but isn't there a chance the car, when auctioned off, would bring less than the $25,000 (or however much) raised? Wouldn't it be better to just giver the money directly to the charity? I know it's not as fun that way, but still.....

There is a chance that it could go for more than $25,000 too. The charities will get the money regardless. And yes, it has been quite fun.

First off, the car's not going to cost $25 grand. Second, that's what a reserve price is for.

Have a good time raising money for charity. Do it with dignity.

MustangFive:

Howdy. I have couple minutes and wanted to pop in. I see we're targeting (mostly) comedians/comic actors.

What do you think, Sarah? Others?

I'm okay with adding Daniel Tosh in. So Great Glavin's Ghost if you could amend the schedule in your huge post to add Daniel Tosh to the Twitterbomb from 7-8 tomorrow, I'd appreciate it!

Yeah, I am familiar with reserve prices. If it wasn't met, what then? I've seen many auctions where the reserve isn't met.

BokChoy: Lulz does not mean what you think it means.

For it to be lulz, the trans am would have to be some super rare version, towed to a convention of trans am enthusiasts, and set on fire in front of them.

Stop using the word lulz please.

Heh. I can remember when the very concept of what *you* consider 'lulz' to mean was unacceptable on the Internet, and would have resulted in real personal consequences. You'll get over it.

A reserve price means you're stuck with the car. Better is to buy the car on contingency. If you find a car dealer with an appropriate Trans Am, you let him know your intentions and contract to buy the car to auction it off with an agreement to return the car for the purchase amount if the auction fails to meet a reserve price. Most dealers would go for it. Private parties are a wide open question.

The real problem is that if you get Joe to participate but the auction fails to meet the reserve, it's embarrassing so his staff should keep him away from it for that reason.

Yeah, I am familiar with reserve prices. If it wasn't met, what then? I've seen many auctions where the reserve isn't met.

Auctioning things off for charity is nothing new. I have participated in them before. Basically a lot will depend on how much publicity we get. The more publicity usually equals a higher sale price. And more publicity also equals a better auction. Some people have been looking into the Barrett-Jackson auction for example. They are a nationally televised auction known for muscle cars and charity auctions. And if we can get in that one that would put it in a top-tier auction. And the odds that the car would make much more money there are high. However that may not happen. But there are always others options as well that people are looking at. It sounds like you are just looking for specifics but (to my knowledge) they have not been finalized yet. As things progress I'm sure more specific details will come. But to try to answer your question: Is it possible that the car will not get a high auction price? yes. Is it possible that the car will make much more money at auction? yes.

Another thing to remember is that this is not a professional charity that has spent months organizing this single event. This came from the initial idea to this point in about a week. It is something that is getting more refined everyday. If you are not comfortable donating to this right now you can wait for more details to come. Or you can simply cut us out and donate directly to the charities themselves.

I guess what I'm saying is to try and be a little patient here. Everyone is doing their best to try and make this as successful as possible and to raise as much money as possible.

\take this with a grain of salt because I'm simply helping out. The people who started/running this may differ on a few points. I am not speaking for anyone or anything just as myself

2012-10-21 04:00:11 AM

mcwehrle: Graffito: legalgus: Why do you continue to post this Biden crap? First off, most charities do not want an overpriced used firebird. Second, they can use direct cash contributions. Third, Biden is a fat cat jerk of the first order.

They are going to sell the Trans Am and give the proceeds to charity. It's a fund raising gimmick like a walk-a-thon.
You didn't really need to have that explained to you, did you?

Yes, sadly, they are that dense. And have miserable lives.

So you're going to give it to Biden or just have him pose in front of it? What about the gift tax? Or the taxes buying the thing? Is there a seller or buyer premium? Are you sure the reserve will be met? If it doesn't, what then? Sell it at a loss? Are you placing the value of the car just on an internet meme that most real people don't even know about? Couldn't all of the the money being lost for a joke be better spent by giving it directly to the charities? Couldn't you rent one and have Biden pose in front of it? What is it you actually trying to do here?

A lot of those questions are in the FAQ on the site. for the auction details it would depend on the auction it is in. the value of the car was based on ones currently for sale. If you feel that way I would suggest donating to the charities themselves.

Also , IANAL, but, that design looks very trademark-infringe-y.

Ty digitalrain.

I will ask richielaw what designs are kosher when i see him.

The way i see it, the sooner we offer the perk, the better. No point in offering them in the last weeks.

2012-10-21 09:42:54 PM

vygramul: 1) It's a reference to an Onion article about a shirtless Joe Biden washing his Trans Am in the Whitehouse driveway.

Thank you. A straight up explanation like that would go a lot further in the OP than the usual crap that just says "we don't want to explain anything, if you don't understand then shut up and find another thread".

Since this is Fark, I think the appropriate responses are either:

A). Traveling

Or

B). Has to be at the gym in 26 minutes

A little bit of both. :)

It was more along the lines of work and life getting in the way of this. After a week running around doing NOTHING but this I had to take a break. And actually do work and talk to the gf. :)

This thing will all come down to a cost-benefit analysis at the end of the campaign. The goal will be to determine what is going to help the charities the most. If we get more media attention and find a car in perfect condition at a reasonable price, then we will try to go through the auction. The auction doesn't work without the media attention, possibly Joe Biden giving us a "WHAT UP" and finding a mint condition awesome looking car.

If it is determined that an auction is not reasonable, i.e. we will not be able to make a net profit on the auctioning of the vehicle, as well as purchase the vehicle as a contingency to a successful sale at auction, the monies contributed will be donated directly to the charities minus expenses for perks and any tax obligation that I may owe.

Hope this helps. :)
