A very special note from Unfreakable:

I don't really look at this as a Democrat thing or a Republican thing or a political thing, I consider this an Internet thing. The same as when Fark helped send a crowbar and a Half-Life strategy manual to the scientist at the LHC that looked like Gordon Freeman in one of the publicity photos.

A lot of people are saying, "Hey, he can afford to buy his own car!" Of course he can. This isn't about helping Joe because he can't afford a car, it's about making a silly Internet meme become reality, and also to help some charities. If you really want to discuss politics, I'd ask that you go over to the politics tab; there are a lot of current stories there that you can discuss. This one is about having fun and doing something neat. If you don't want to join in, you don't have to--that's your choice. I'd just ask that you find a different thread that's more to your liking.

To all of you Farkers that have helped in any way, whether it was contributing with money, or time, or organizing any of this, or helping share the word on your Facebook wall or tweeting it--YOU FREAKING ROCK. Thank you for what you've done, and hopefully what you'll continue to do. This is awesome and everybody who has had a hand in helping to set this up or keep the momentum going is fantastic. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I have a remarkably dumb question, and hopefully you'll forgive it. I understand what you are doing and why, but isn't there a chance the car, when auctioned off, would bring less than the $25,000 (or however much) raised? Wouldn't it be better to just giver the money directly to the charity? I know it's not as fun that way, but still.....

There is a chance that it could go for more than $25,000 too. The charities will get the money regardless. And yes, it has been quite fun.

First off, the car's not going to cost $25 grand. Second, that's what a reserve price is for.

Have a good time raising money for charity. Do it with dignity.

Howdy. I have couple minutes and wanted to pop in. I see we're targeting (mostly) comedians/comic actors.

I just realized that, in all if our tweet-list-making, we've failed to identify a VERY obvious target:

Daniel Tosh

He's funny, he has 6.9 MILLION followers on the Tweet Machine and he has a show that is focused solely on stuff from the Internet.

Sarah, would you consider adding him to the Tweet schedule for tomorrow? He's a west coast guy, so if he were added to the end of the schedule @ 7-8 PM EDT, that'd be 4-5 PDT.

What do you think, Sarah? Others?

I'm okay with adding Daniel Tosh in. So Great Glavin's Ghost if you could amend the schedule in your huge post to add Daniel Tosh to the Twitterbomb from 7-8 tomorrow, I'd appreciate it!

Yeah, I am familiar with reserve prices. If it wasn't met, what then? I've seen many auctions where the reserve isn't met.

BokChoy: Lulz does not mean what you think it means.

For it to be lulz, the trans am would have to be some super rare version, towed to a convention of trans am enthusiasts, and set on fire in front of them.

Stop using the word lulz please.

Heh. I can remember when the very concept of what *you* consider 'lulz' to mean was unacceptable on the Internet, and would have resulted in real personal consequences. You'll get over it.

A reserve price means you're stuck with the car. Better is to buy the car on contingency. If you find a car dealer with an appropriate Trans Am, you let him know your intentions and contract to buy the car to auction it off with an agreement to return the car for the purchase amount if the auction fails to meet a reserve price. Most dealers would go for it. Private parties are a wide open question.

The real problem is that if you get Joe to participate but the auction fails to meet the reserve, it's embarrassing so his staff should keep him away from it for that reason.

Yeah, I am familiar with reserve prices. If it wasn't met, what then? I've seen many auctions where the reserve isn't met.

Auctioning things off for charity is nothing new. I have participated in them before. Basically a lot will depend on how much publicity we get. The more publicity usually equals a higher sale price. And more publicity also equals a better auction. Some people have been looking into the Barrett-Jackson auction for example. They are a nationally televised auction known for muscle cars and charity auctions. And if we can get in that one that would put it in a top-tier auction. And the odds that the car would make much more money there are high. However that may not happen. But there are always others options as well that people are looking at. It sounds like you are just looking for specifics but (to my knowledge) they have not been finalized yet. As things progress I'm sure more specific details will come. But to try to answer your question: Is it possible that the car will not get a high auction price? yes. Is it possible that the car will make much more money at auction? yes.

Another thing to remember is that this is not a professional charity that has spent months organizing this single event. This came from the initial idea to this point in about a week. It is something that is getting more refined everyday. If you are not comfortable donating to this right now you can wait for more details to come. Or you can simply cut us out and donate directly to the charities themselves.

I guess what I'm saying is to try and be a little patient here. Everyone is doing their best to try and make this as successful as possible and to raise as much money as possible.

\take this with a grain of salt because I'm simply helping out. The people who started/running this may differ on a few points. I am not speaking for anyone or anything just as myself

2012-10-21 04:00:11 AM

mcwehrle: Graffito: legalgus: Why do you continue to post this Biden crap? First off, most charities do not want an overpriced used firebird. Second, they can use direct cash contributions. Third, Biden is a fat cat jerk of the first order.

They are going to sell the Trans Am and give the proceeds to charity. It's a fund raising gimmick like a walk-a-thon.
You didn't really need to have that explained to you, did you?

Yes, sadly, they are that dense. And have miserable lives.

So you're going to give it to Biden or just have him pose in front of it? What about the gift tax? Or the taxes buying the thing? Is there a seller or buyer premium? Are you sure the reserve will be met? If it doesn't, what then? Sell it at a loss? Are you placing the value of the car just on an internet meme that most real people don't even know about? Couldn't all of the the money being lost for a joke be better spent by giving it directly to the charities? Couldn't you rent one and have Biden pose in front of it? What is it you actually trying to do here?

A lot of those questions are in the FAQ on the site. for the auction details it would depend on the auction it is in. the value of the car was based on ones currently for sale. If you feel that way I would suggest donating to the charities themselves.

Ty digitalrain.

I will ask richielaw what designs are kosher when i see him.

The way i see it, the sooner we offer the perk, the better. No point in offering them in the last weeks.

2012-10-21 09:42:54 PM

vygramul: 1) It's a reference to an Onion article about a shirtless Joe Biden washing his Trans Am in the Whitehouse driveway.
2) We're hoping we can get Biden to take a pic with it or something, but he's not getting the car. So we're not really buying it for him.
3) The charities will get the money. Joe Biden can act as a force-multiplier by making the Onion article true and really making some money for the charities. But no matter how you slice it, the money is going to charity.

Thank you. A straight up explanation like that would go a lot further in the OP than the usual crap that just says "we don't want to explain anything, if you don't understand then shut up and find another thread".

A). Traveling

Or

B). Has to be at the gym in 26 minutes

A little bit of both. :)

It was more along the lines of work and life getting in the way of this. After a week running around doing NOTHING but this I had to take a break. And actually do work and talk to the gf. :)

Or you can simply cut us out and donate directly to the charities themsel ...

This thing will all come down to a cost-benefit analysis at the end of the campaign. The goal will be to determine what is going to help the charities the most. If we get more media attention and find a car in perfect condition at a reasonable price, then we will try to go through the auction. The auction doesn't work without the media attention, possibly Joe Biden giving us a "WHAT UP" and finding a mint condition awesome looking car.

If it is determined that an auction is not reasonable, i.e. we will not be able to make a net profit on the auctioning of the vehicle, as well as purchase the vehicle as a contingency to a successful sale at auction, the monies contributed will be donated directly to the charities minus expenses for perks and any tax obligation that I may owe.

Hope this helps. :)
