I saw a commercial advertising tablets, and everyone was using detachable keyboards.

Now I'm not a rocket scientist or anything...but isn't the point of a tablet that it doesn't involve a keyboard? And if not, then why do you need a tablet and not a laptop, other than the OMGKEWL factor!

I have a bluetooth keyboard for my iPad. I don't use it often, but when I want to just go somewhere that isn't my office or my studio and write emails or fill out schedules...anything that will have me doing a lot of writing...I find it is worth taking along.

So you can overpay for an underpowered netbook.

I don't think it's fair to call that a tablet. It's the touch screen desktop that we've been promised for years. It's cool, but I don't think I'll run out and buy one myself.

I could see it being useful in some applications, but I don't know how much mass market appeal it would have.

No, it's not.
Tablets are retarded. But I wish I'd thought of them. Lots of fools who don't like their money and wish to part with it.

Sony, I am disappoint.

I can see this being put down somewhere and very quickly becoming a permanent all-in-one after the novelty has worn off. In which case you may as well get a permanent touch all-in-one with better hardware, that's cheaper and potentially larger (depending on what you want).

"Your kids can pick this 11-pound, battery-powered monster up and take it to their room and watch a movie, or it can be laid down on the living room floor so everyone can play games together."

fusillade762: How long before we have a coffee table computer?

Microsoft's had them on campus in Redmond for nearly 10 years. The ultimate irony of how badly they got smoked on iphones and tablets was, to the Redmond mind, they invented the tablet PC first.

Then miserably failed to bring it to market in any meaningful way for years. Just sat on the product. Or had techies be overruled by moron middle managers, which apparently they've been collecting out there like pogs.

Anyway, behold, the Microsoft Tablet beta, circa I don't know, a few years before iphone. It was called "Microsoft Surface." They litter the break areas of the Redmond campus now.

The argument wasn't "Tablets are stupid and people shouldn't buy them." The argument was "Why would anyone combine two popular items into one device that does both?"

Tablets are very popular (not sure if you guys noticed), and they are just laptops with no keyboard. Why wouldn't the next logical leap be to make a laptop with a detachable keyboard, so it can function as both a laptop and a tablet?

Eleven pounds gives them more exercise, and $879 gives you a better excuse to beat them when they break it.

Generation_D: tablet

The Navy has had them longer (replaces a map table). I was doing a bunch of electronics on such a device. The big thing then was swapping out the clunky CRT (which was always going to be a bit fragile) with a DMD projector. Cost: high 6 figures. Computer: military rugged SUN workstation (less of a joke back then). Case: milled from a solid block of aluminum (standard Navy procedure). Kicker: absolutely must work while under enemy attack.

Welcome to March of 2011:

upload.wikimedia.org

And unlike every other tablet/keyboard option (iPad with bluetooth keyboard case, Archos XS, and Microsoft Surface tablets), the Asus models can actually sit on your lap instead of being useful only on tabletops. Good battery life, too.

I think the hinge-detachable form factor is superior simply because it can stand on any surface, be moved around, etc. The clamshell laptop form factor is best for anything involving typing (even basic web browsing) and watching movies. It makes sense to only detach the display portion when you want something just to use as an E-Reader or for listening to music or playing games. Kinda surprised that Microsoft and Apple aren't trying to copy the Asus design.

Sony Story:

I have never had any luck with sony electronics. Over the last 15 years, i had multiple car cd players, portable music players, and now just two weeks ago, a home theater reciever, just spontaneously break.

The home theater reciever was less than two years old. For comparison, the kenwood I had prior lasted 8 years, and i only replaced it because I needed HDMI.

From some internet searching, i'm not alone. Its ridiculous that they can't seem to make equipment that lasts. I replaced the reciever with a 200$ denon (the sony was 350$) when I bought it, and the denon honestly has better features and is far simpler to customize.

Seriously, fark sony. I'm sure they were good in the 70's and 80's, but they sure ain't now.

Pretty much. I have a discman from 1997 that still works perfectly - even though it was left in my car for several years of Nebraska/Iowa summers and winters, and fell off the top bunk many times at Ft. Gordon.

But that was then. Their current portables won't get nearly that kind of mileage. And their modern home products (TVs, laptops, receivers, speakers, etc) are Insignia-level quality, just with a 25%-50% markup for that logo. Every category has better products with a much lower price tag. Hell, Toshiba or Sharp could probably produce a better Playstation than Sony has ever built.
