Gallup was posting bad polls way back in August

2012-10-20 11:31:20 AM
FTFA: If fraud is a business model at Gallup, surely that attitude permeates throughout the organization, ergo to wit, Gallup's election polls cannot be trusted.

News organizations should cover this story and the inevitable conclusion that Gallup's huge misses on polling data were not mistakes but done on purpose to influence public opinion.

Why would Gallup do that? If the administrations justice department is barking up your tree, wouldn't you want his opponent to win in order to avoid prosecution.

I can't wait to see how this scandal unfolds.

Oh, just as I predicted.

This argument is just as meritless on the left as it is on the right. Could their polling data be consistently skewed? Sure. Can you draw that conclusion from the fact that they may be greedy and have overbilled the US government? Hell naw.

Because President Obama personally approves every lawsuit filed by the DOJ. And he knew 3 years ago that Gallup polls would show him trailing in polls only 3 weeks before the 2012 elections. Much like his family knew to publish his birth announcement 50 years prior to his running for office in order to prove he was born in the United States.

What a complicated world you fundies live in. I don't know how you can keep straight all the conspiracies against you.

You can care about people, you just have to care about your fiscal and societal betters.

Feeling bad that Muffy VanLandingham's Cape Cod home burned down a month before the family was getting ready to go summering? OK.

Gallup overbilled the government, then fired whistleblowers... I have no problem at all with my tax dollars supporting thorough litigation of the matter. Given that the lawsuit was filed months ago and the government's joining was expected, one could argue just as easily that they're publishing crap polls *because* of the prosecution... either way, it seems like their reputation is about to go downhill, these accounting matters are usually rather easy to spot.

You got it backwards. The KOS writer is arguing that Gallup was caught overbilling by the Justice Department. Gallup might try to use their influence to get a new President in office, so that the Justice Department will drop the lawsuit.

Well, not really. They've just come up with a model that gives them dramatically different results than, you know, everybody else. It doesn't necessarily mean they're skewed. Hell, they could be right, and everybody else's methodology could be invalid due to some massive shift in how people are going to vote that Gallup has discovered and everyone else doesn't know about yet. But the chances of that are pretty dodgamned slim, and it's much more likely that Gallup's current methodology is crap.

For those too lazy to read...

FTA
A fired Gallup employee who became a whistle-blower, Michael Lindley, alleges in the lawsuit that he discovered shortly after going to work for the polling company that it had engaged in widespread fraud against the government.
Honored as "Rookie of the Year" at Gallup in 2009, Lindley says he was fired six months later when he told colleagues that if the company didn't report overbilling practices to the government, Lindley would do so himself.

His lawsuit, filed nearly three years ago and unsealed Wednesday in federal court, says Gallup routinely submitted inflated cost estimates which enabled the company to reap huge profits from its government business.
In addition to its polling work, Gallup provides consulting services to government, corporate and other clients around the world.
The Justice Department said it was stepping into the case with respect to Gallup's contracts with the Mint and the State Department.

Ta Dah. Headline is trolltastic.

Here's what he had to say about it:
Because Gallup's polls usually take large sample sizes, statistical variance alone probably cannot account these sorts of shifts. It seems to be an endemic issue with their methodology.

Which is definitely accusing the methodology of crappiness, but not showing why. I'm presuming this is because he doesn't have complete access to their models, else he'd explain why they're crap instead of just pointing to Gallup's crappy history. My defense of Gallup was fairly tongue-in-cheek, btw.

Well, what I meant in my generally silly response is they're on a likely voter model now - and they determine likely voters with a series of questions, usually like "Are you registered to vote?" and "Did you vote in the last election?" combined with some magic based on their demographic. Maybe they decided this year that people who say they voted in the last election are less likely to vote than other people asking the same question think they are, or something like that.

And just in case I haven't made it clear enough, I think Gallup is really screwing something up.

I hear what you're saying but in the case of an outlier like Gallup, while groundbreaking is possible, what I recall from Nate Silver's writing on the history of their accuracy screwing up is far more probable. The odds of a new discovery on such a well traveled road - especially in a field like statistics - is pretty slim. I feel safer letting Occam handle Gallup.
