Kid's really good.

CSB:

I saw Victor Wooten play parts of the Seinfeld Theme (along with a few other TV themes) a while back. I can't remember them all, but there was a little Gilligan's Island chucked in there that got the crowd singing along.

Very weird show.

I've seen Vic probably a dozen times with the Flecktones, his own groups, Marcus Miller, and Stanley Clarke. Most of his performances include a 5-10 minute freestyle, improved medley. They're invariably the best part of the show.

I seem to remember seeing this at least 4-5 year ago (by all means everyone who hasn't seen it enjoy it, not one of the "I saw it before so why green" childish brigade), but if that's the case he should be of like real band age now and someone should know who he is. Don't see a name anywhere on the video, anyone know?

I'm sad to report that after 35 years in the music industry, I can safely say that talent doesn't count.
He's very good, and is likely still performing.
Just not to the overwhelming majority of consumers who don't care if the performer is really playing or not, just as long as he can dance well.

Oldie but goodie.

A scientific expedition disembarks from its plane at the final outpost of civilization in the deepest Amazon rain forest. They immediately notice the ceaseless thrumming of native drums. As they venture further into the bush, the drums never stop, day or night, for weeks. The lead scientist asks one of the natives about this, and the native's only reply is "Drums good. Drums never stop. Very bad if drums stop." The drumming continues, night and day, until one night, six weeks into the trip. Then one day all of a sudden the drums stop. Immediately the natives run away screaming in terror. The scientists grab one boy and demand "What is it? The drums have stopped! What happens when the drums stop?" The terrified boy then answers: " . . . BASS SOLO!!!"

Do you play? Can you recommend an instructional book, CD or DVD? I just started a few months ago. Work/school/family don't allow me time for real lessons, so I wind up trying to learn off YouTube. I've played acoustic guitar since I was a kid, so I'm not new to music. But for me bass is a whole different animal, and I wouldn't call my self 'intermediate'. If it makes any difference, I have an Ibanez SR300M and a Fender Rumble 30. I also have a Cry Baby wah, just for fun.

Derwood: Why does every amazing, young bass player play in street bands that perform craptacular new-jazz bullshiat

Probably because most rock bands really don't want a hot bass player - they want someone like Bill Wyman or Michaal Anthony - solid, can mesh well with the drummer and lay a good foundation for the song.

Guys like Geddy and Ox and Claypool are the exception in rock - in jazz they're the standard.

I just started playing again after 25 years, was kind of not given the option to wuss out after an Ibenez bass and practice amp were thrust upon me and I was basically kidnapped and taken to a potluck to play before 200+ people....... greatest night of my life once I realized that my love of what I have listened to traveled to my playing, dexterity was by no means good but I found my groove..!

I told my wife I would forsake the groupies if I could only be a part of a band that could make a decent run at "symptom of the universe", cannot describe the joy I felt in those 5 minutes...

Rocksmith now has a bass expansion to their guitar teaching game. Instead of playing Guitar Hero or Rockstar with a plastic toy instrument, you plug your guitar or bass directly into your PS3 using a USB adapter and learn to play the real thing.

I don't know shiat about gee-tars, but wouldn't an 8-string bass be like a 12-string guitar, in that your still playing it exactly like a 4-string, just 2 strings at once for harmonic purposes?

That said, I sure would be surprised if there wasn't a 5 or 6 string bass somewheres in that picture.

One must wonder why Bootsy would endorse 5- and 6-string versions of his Warwick Signature line. Or why Flea endorses the Modulus 5-string with his name on it. Or why McCartney played a Wal 5-string in the '90s. Or why.. well, pretty much any professional bassist out there is willing to go past four strings. Perhaps they're not as pure are you are.

Gah, same here. He's totally right. From WP:

A signature of Seinfeld is its theme music. Composed by Jonathan Wolff, it consists of distinct solo sampled bass synthesizer riffs which open the show and connect the scenes, often accompanied by a "percussion track" composed of mouth noises, such as pops and clicks. The bass synthesizer music eventually replaced the original standard sitcom music by Jep Epstein when it was played again after the first broadcast "The Seinfeld Chronicles".

Seinfeld lacked a traditional title track and the riffs were played over the first moments of dialogue or action. They vary throughout each episode and are played in an improvised funk style with bass synthesizer. An additional musical theme with an ensemble, led by a synthesized mid-range brass instrument, ends each episode.

I had no idea.

I was also unaware for many years that the 'bass' on the Doors albums was synth.
