(Ethics Alarms)   Ethics Alarms gets a little riled up about FARK's treatment of a teacher/student relationship. "...websites like Fark shouldn't reinforce it even in jest, because the jest does reinforce it"   (ethicsalarms.com ) divider line

ref tfa: no, i think most on fark think the whole hysterical panic mongering thing over almost-adults having sex with adults is stupid.

Breach of trust? Sure. Lose your job and never get another in the same field again. Go be a sanitation worker or something, just not working with sub-adults.

But criminal? Jail time? Usually no, so long as everything was voluntary and no one was obviously exploited. That does not mean it was smart or that someone wasnt emotionally hurt.

a 10000000 liability? Oh hell no. At most a refund of tuition/fees if it was a private school.

Ethics Alarms? Sounds like someone needs their soap box burned.

Sounds like the author doesn't understand that a vast majority to late teen males will stick their d*ck in just about anything from knot-holes in trees/fences, door jams, peanut butter/jam/jelly, watermelon, warm apple pie, to young adult women who are within 6+ years of their age. The problem is that these young men are still immature and whereas they'd brag about sleeping with a female classmate, they don't realize/think about the trouble the 'older' women would get in.

Just how would a 16 yr old male be negatively affected by sleeping with an older woman? (assuming there is no rape-rape, it was his mother/grandmother, sister, or an obscenely obese woman).

Who said it was in jest? The only thing wrong in these cases is the idiot kids are talking about it and getting the hot teachers in trouble.

Dating after 16 is part of growing up. Unless one is saying girls are way too stupid to say "no" and keep their knees together. Because if that's the case, and girls need insane levels of protection, then we should outlaw tight clothes, short shorts, and being in public without an older male relative.

Freedom's a biatch, either we teach kids to grow up and live with their choices, or lock them away like we're the friggin' repressive Islamians.

/Yes, I know it's Muslims.
//And yes, I'm serious. Age of consent should be 16, drinking age should be 18, and adults should remember their roles as teachers, rather than sheltering everyone in cocoons.

I think EA may be confusing "children" with adolescents. A "minor" is a legal non-adult -- someone who has not reached the legal age of majority -- but is not by that fact automatically a "child". If you have sex with someone five minutes before they legally turn 18, you may have committed a felony. (Details vary by jurisdiction.) Wait five minutes, and anything goes, legally. Anyone who doesn't see the absurdity in that needs to get their neck adjusted. I'm not arguing for an entirely subjective legal standard; I'm just pointing out that conflating "minor" with "child" is bullshiat. If the "minor" involved is prepubescent, then yes, that minor is a "child" by any reasonable reckoning. If that "minor" is 16, I think there's room for debate on the matter, but in any case that "minor" is not rationally a "child" unless they're found to be unusually slow. (E.g., I would agree that anyone who engages in sex with a profoundly retarded 20-year-old has engaged in child molestation. But most 16-year-olds are only stupid in the normal teenage way, and for that not notably less intelligent than most people ten years their senior.)

I am not defending these acts, either. Teachers are fully aware of the expectations placed on them, and these violations are serious as breaches of institutional, public, or parent trust, not merely the more slippery concepts of ethics, morals, decency, and so on. It's the same reason that public officials, police, and other public servants are suitably given harsher penalties for the same violations as 'oridinary' citizens: Their violations also violate the trust given them, and the oaths they swear to upon accepting those responsibilities.

What I am saying is that EA and others need to take a more nuanced approach than the childishly binary "minor" = "child," concluding from that that a teacher has necessarily "raped" a student. It just isn't true, and like the "Drugs Don't Work" campaign of my high school years, kids can smell the bullshiat from a long way off. And that tends to dillute any other ethical messages you want to convey.
