Watch again, that wasn't some low line drive kick that would have been blocked at the line in the NFL. This kid has a farking cannon of a leg.

Field goals are way harder in the NFL, though. A lot better blockers, which means lower trajectories (mandatory for longer field goals) are harder to be successful with.

Still very impressive, though, but there is a reason there hasn't been a FG from longer than 63. I doubt there will ever be a longer than 65 yard FG in the NFL that isn't a free kick.

Yep. When Elam tied the record he said two thirds of the kickers in the NFL could do it if they got the chance. And there's all sorts of stories about Janikowski hitting just ungodly long FGs in practice or warm ups.

I do agree that the record is a bit weaksauce because not too many coaches and scenarios will give a kicker that chance. Nevertheless, a record is a record, just as a W is a W, no matter the circumstances.

Also, there is a difference between kicking in practice and in a game, just as there is a difference between guessing all the questions on Jeopardy while watching at home, but choking on the actual show.

/as a Saints fan, I will be gracious when this one is broken...but still sad for both Demps and Elam. Kickers don't get much glory but they get all the hate

yeah, figure end of a half, ball in the right place is about the only chance for it. Can't think of any coach who'd go for a 64 or 65 yard field goal on a fourth down in the middle of a quarter.

Nah, that still isn't past 65 yards. The longer the kick, the lower the trajectory, which means it is a lot more likely to get blocked. That is why teams rarely kick from beyond 60 yards, unless its the end of the half or game.

WhyteRaven74: machoprogrammer: I doubt there will ever be a longer than 65 yard FG in the NFL that isn't a free kick.

It is definitely doable, but very few coaches would risk it due to the likelyhood of it being blocked. Any NFL kicker can make them from beyond 65, but the chances of a block past 60 is lot higher (plus, if you miss, good field position for the other team). The longer the kick, the lower the kick's trajectory. There is a reason why teams don't take many 60+ yard chances, even at end of the half.

I didn't watch that game, actually. Oh wow, that is impressive. I still don't see many coaches taking a chance at that distance, even with the really strong legs of today. Seabass, Crosby, Akers, Zuerlin among others all have the leg strength to do it, but it's pretty risky unless its the end of a half. And even then, you gotta worry about a block.

Dog Welder: Pfft. I've seen a mule that could kick a 99-yarder.

I loved that movie as a kid

Haven't read the entire thread but in high school you kick off of a tee, so the records are longer. I blocked for the other 67 yard kick in school. Promise. He couldn't even come close in college. The tee makes a huge difference. Think about all the guys in the pros that kick out the back of the end zone on a kick off but can't even come close on a field goal. Still really cool.

Wait, didn't see our 67 on that list but I swear it was, odd. Huh. Must be fairly common. Makes sense , as many high school football games as there are going on at any given Friday night in the fall.

Christian Bale: antidisestablishmentarianism: Can you imagine what it would be like boning the lady on the right? Would she make gestures like that throughout the entire session?

Hahaha what was she doing? Sign language for dummies?

Who cares? I'll take her.

Whatthefark: Hey, I went to Central Valley High school back in the late 80's until I got caught smoking weed behind the gym.Their football team sucked then.

/BTW, it's pronounced SHAY-dle Park High School, not SHAD-el like the newscaster said.
//Not that anyone cares...

I was mildly surprised they pronounced Spokane correctly

dickfreckle: WhyteRaven74: NaughtyByNurture: Don't NFL lockers regularly make them from 65+ during warm up?

Yep. When Elam tied the record he said two thirds of the kickers in the NFL could do it if they got the chance. And there's all sorts of stories about Janikowski hitting just ungodly long FGs in practice or warm ups.

Kickers don't get much glory but they get all the hate

never understood this mentality or why people feel that way. I really cannot think of a time a kicker lost a game. ever.

Common scenario: team is down by two and within FG range. Run a few plays to try and get a TD. Doesn't happen, so bring out the kicker. Kicker misses. Recap from the game: "The kicker lost the game."

BS. The kicker did nothing to cause the team to be down two points before he walked on the field. The team was losing before the kick and were still losing after the kick. The kicker had a chance to save the rest of the sorry team from losing, but he alone, did not lose the game. The other 54 people did that all on their own. Kickers give you a chance to win a game, they are never the reason the team lost.

You can see the tee in the kicker's hand during the celebration.

Amazing job though even with a tee.
