To be fair, Americans in general don't seem to care for having many people in their backyard. Good fences make good neighbors and all that.

And roofs make shelter, no?

Word.

I'm the last person to defend Brooklyn yuppie trash, but you have to look at the flip side.

First, if the problem with the homeless was simply "these people are down on their luck and can't afford a home" is one thing. Not something that, on its own, would harm a neighborhood. Unfortunately, homelessness is also paired with things like drug abuse, violent behavior, theft, or mental health issues.

Second, while again just having poorer people nearby is not a problem in itself, what it does do is lower the value of adjacent property, as the next owners would unavoidably have issue with buying next to a homeless shelter. It is unfair to ask people to now take a large hit to their property values. lower enough to the point it might put their value below what they have on their mortgage... and now you have sent the area back into the mess it was in the 70s with a bunch of homes people cant afford to keep up.

Wow, a leftists are hypocrites article on gawker? I'm a bit shocked.

/Ya, both sides are hypocrites, humans are mostly scum

Gotta love what Fark has become, biatching about having homeless in their neighborhoods is a bad thing, I don't know anyone who would want numerous homeless people living outside their door.

People just don't want people who the majority see as mentally disturbed, criminals, or addicts living near them, its amazing people would never want that element living near them. Just shocking.

And yes I know not all are in those categories but a lot fall into those 3 categories.

Life's not fair. I would like it to be fairer and I have some socialist leanings.
But that doesn't extend to inviting crack addicts to live next door.

Hey Subby, link us to an article where Republicans are happy to have homeless people in their backyard. You know what they say, what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the hypocritical douchebag.

Because Fark has suddenly turned into the biggest, warmest fuzzy this side of the sun, we should start a fundraiser for these homeless people to make up for the shiatty progressives who clearly can't see the despair for all their worldly goods.

Would that change the fact that liberals are the biggest hypocrites on the face of the earth? I don't think so.

This is why we can't have nice things.

2012-10-19 11:15:42 PM
The poor poor pitiful poor should stay in their own neighborhoods that are already ruined. I'm giving them a farking dollar, not the $50,000 that their presence next to my house will cost me. That's a lot of farking soups.

2012-10-19 11:17:47 PM
Honestly I doubt you would find any neighborhood in the world where they would gladly vote yes for a homeless shelter in their backyard. The only way homeless shelters get built is by it not being up for vote in the residential area in question. Asking whether you want a homeless shelter in your backyard is likely asking whether you want your specific tax raised, not tax raised in general, but yours specific.

They're not homeless. They're houseless.

Everybody in America kick in $20, hire some construction companies, build some houses, and boom, no more houseless people. Hell, we could probably get the more sane, non drug addled houseless to work for free.

And I ironically people who have done the math have found it is cheaper to permanently house the chronic homeless than the alternative of letting them wander in and out of jails and hospitals, both of which are more expensive than just giving them a roof over their head, even if you add in the cost of intermittent supervision.

Fortunately, apartment living is fine by me. Drug dealers nearby, plenty of parking, weird stains on my carpet. What more could I want?

I don't blame progressives for not wanting homeless people living near them.

I do, however, blame progressives for trying to force everyone else to let homeless people live near them, often to the point of using class warfare and "social justice" lawsuits to confiscate high-value property and turn it into low-income apartments with structural supports made of OSD particle board.

How much does a pauper's funeral cost?

Why is it necessary to use my wealth to pay to barely keep alive someone who contributes nothing to society?

So are advocating the South American solution of using death squads to kill off the homeless? That's is a (final) solution, if that is really the sort of society you want to live in, but it isn't the type of "civilization" I would wish to be a part of.

Darwin isn't going to do your work for you. In fact, the "Darwinistic" society becomes, the larger the homeless population becomes. An egalitarianism society will give more people a chance to get out of homelessness, and the smaller population of chronic homeless were going to be there regardless of social services that are or aren't provided. But they will still fill our jail cells and even get medical treatment just because being homeless doesn't make you immune to the law.

If there were no poor, homeless, sick or mentally ill people out there, liberals would have no one to feel for, to feel that important glow of self-worth when they throw $2 into the collection plate.

I'm simply opposed to redistributing wealth to keep them afloat. Private voluntary charity is fine. Have at it.
