I'm still not sure if I have a handle on this new Fark Us tab thingy. But wouldn't this be a good place for that? Can we cross list?

I did tag this for FarkUs when I submitted it, so it should go there...assuming it gets a green. (please, mods?) :)

A cross list to Main would be very helpful though.

IndieGoGo does but I elected not to use PayPal when setting up this campaign, because of PayPal's history of locking up accounts that receive large amounts of money in a short time and taking weeks or months to release it.

Well, it's the small things that keep you sane. I won't lie - I've seen far more horror than good in my years, but it only takes something fairly minor to erase so much of the bad stuff from memory. I do not believe that humans are fundamentally decent beings, but I also know that I can't live my life constantly thinking that lest it corrode my heart.

Stuff like this is always a treat.

Correct, you can donate directly to the Society of Saint Vincent dePaul at their website. There is also a PayPal email that the individual chapter has set up. However, when I created the IndieGoGo campaign the only way to donate was to the national charity or send a check by mail to a PO Box in Ohio.

Since I knew that a lot of people who would otherwise donate had never even seen a checkbook as a lot of younger people don't even use them (I'm 42 and write 2 or 3 a year), and that it would leverage IGG's sharing and tallying functionality, and that it was a way of specifically thumbing our nose at the people who wanted to make feeding hungry people a political issue, it was a good idea, I think.

I'm really pleased and frankly amazed at how fast it's taken off. With 44 days left, who knows what it will get to?

I realize that it could be taken that way, but our goal starting this was simply to make sure that people who depend on this soup kitchen don't suffer because of partisan politics.

(Full Disclosure: I'm involved with GJTB as well as coordinating this one)

To be fair, Give Joe The Bird is not going to donate or give a Trans Am to the VP. That's the joke; the funds will be used to buy one and take it to DC and try to get a photo op with the VP. Since it'll be after the election it has a fair shot of happening, I think. Then the car is to be auctioned and the proceeds sent to four charities- Doctors Without Borders, The Wounded Warrior Project, GLAAD, and the Biden Breast Health Initiative. The joke is that we're buying VP Biden a Trans Am, but it's really about the charity.

If you have more questions about it I'd urge you to ask them over on the current GJTB thread here.

I'll leave it at that, but I think it's silly to say this is simply about charity.

So what if a specific soup kitchen was losing donations? It's not like they're the only charity out there feeding the poor. An apolitical organization can let a candidate in the door to help, but not their camera crew, and donors to apolitical organizations shouldn't be demonized when an organization becomes politicized. But the answer isn't to subsidize the politicized, but to stop subsidizing them with donations. Everyone who donated to this indiegogo = FAIL, unless they like supporting political charities.

The Last Rap

Tangen had studied with Sengai since childhood. When he was twenty he wanted to leave his teacher and visit others for comparitive study, but Sengai would not permit this. Every time Tangen suggested it, Sengai would give him a rap on the head.

Finally Tangen asked an elder brother to coax permission from Sengai. This the brother did and then reported to Tangen: "It is arranged. I have fixed it for you to start on your pilgrimage at once."

Tangen went to Sengai to thank him for his permission. The master answered by giving him another rap.

When Tangen related this to his elder brother the other said: "What is the matter? Sengai has no business giving premission and then changing his mind. I will tell him so." And off he went to see the teacher.

"I did not cancel my permission," said Sengai. "I just wished to give him one last smack over the head, for when he returns he will be enlightened and I will not be able to reprimand him again."

Just donated 25 bucks to the organization directly, here are my comments.

This donation is for direct support of Brian J. Antal, president of the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society. I can only hope that the republican party blunders and the loss of fair weather vindictive donators will only fuel the desire of people across this nation to right the wrongs via donation that have been done to your organization and the people you help.

This is the soup kitchen that Paul Ryan did his photo-op in and it's losing some of its donations as a result. This is a privately funded, non-partisan, apolitical organization.

If you RTA you'll see you have other options if you don't want to donate to this soup kitchen. Amongst those are donating instead to a soup kitchen, food bank, homeless shelter or other worthy charities in your area.

Question, on the donation page it states something to the effect of "They will request that the money is donated to this particular soup kitchen". What happens if the charity decides not to give the money where the people that donate what it to go? Is there any way to contact the charity and get some type of response from them agreeing that they will donate all the money to this particular soup kitchen, or do the farkers not really care if it goes to this particular one? It is a great cause, just looking for a little more clarification.

Because this particular soup kitchen has been the victim of an undeserved political attack, and we need to make a point that feeding hungry people takes total precedence over political crapslinging.

The fact that the situation makes the GOP look bad...well that's just a little bonus for some of the folks here.

Good on ya all! Is this thread another IQ dump? One or two have nominated themselves to me so far.

As far as tax deductability, is concerned, I would venture the opinion that 95% of folks could consider a donation to be a charitable one, whether they received a IRS recognized receipt or not. The IRS is no all-seeing, all-knowing hall monitor that's going to be calling you down on $25 donated through indiegogo. If you're so afraid of running afoul of an auditor, you've got much bigger skeletons in your financial closet.

I have one question about this though, since I've never heard of the organization and the website doesn't exactly address this. Does this soup kitchen require those they feed to sit through a sermon before dinner? I volunteered at one years ago that did that, which I don't really have a problem with, except the preacher was completely 'fire and brimstone'. So I'm just curious how this place handles it.

I actually am not hating on Ryan for the photo op. I think he made a tactical error... he should have just called around until he could get a spot helping, then get his photo op at some point.

I think that people in this thread should also try and keep the smug in-your-face-Ryan to a minimum, as you run counter to the spirit of the charity which the thread revolves around... apolitical helping. This soup kitchen. Not as a rebuke of Ryan's error, but to counter the fallout.

[i1339.photobucket.com image 533x489]

One idea I'm not skilled enough to pull off is to take the "pie chart" and give it a swirl. And of course making it look more like soup in a bowl than a hack paste on top.

To keep costs to an absolute minimum we'll be doing very simple text-only tees.

didn't intend it for a t-shirt but if somebody makes up an aesthetically pleasing version, I'm in for a second $100. IDK maybe it can be a thread badge.

Cyclometh: vermicious k'nid: Indiegogo doesn't do Paypal or Amazon? WTF?

IndieGoGo does but I elected not to use PayPal when setting up this campaign, because of PayPal's history of locking up accounts that receive large amounts of money in a short time and taking weeks or months to release it.

That's too bad. I only use Pay Pal for on line.

But I shall donate locally, by check.

Were there no hungry people before that story broke? Are there no hungry people you could make a bigger impact on locally? I guess I'm way off base in thinking this is an opportunistic "eff you" to the evil GOP.

Because we're snarking on Ryan, and you're being butthurt. Go be disingenuous somewhere else.

Butthurt about what? You think I'm a Romney/Ryan supporter?

But fair enough, I'll go be disingenuous somewhere else. You guys keep raising money for this kitchen, which in no way has anything to do with the fact that the republican candidate had a failed photo op there just days before this donation drive started. This obviously isn't the thread for being disingenuous. Ciao

What is crazy is that, realisitically, neither has taken off yet. If somebody notable retweets these drives, or puts something about it on the air, donations are going to be through the roof (especially for the soup kitchen)

You have to be a real asshole to take something like helping a soup kitchen and try to claim that it is an example of the Right being victimized by Liberals. Congratulations. You, like the people who pulled donations and encouraged others to pull donations from this soup kitchen because it refused to let Ryan do publicity pictures there, are real pieces of work.

There are plenty of ways of helping people who need help. You can do that without doing it in the name of some asshole politician. And that politician could easily raise more money than Fark is going to come up with if he actually cared. He'll spend millions on campaigning while you guys are trying to donate a few thousand.

Much like that "give a car to some poor politician" crap. He can afford to buy your house, tear it down, and have the land salted, all without noticing, but we're supposed to buy him a car. Screw that.

It's your money. Donate in the name of whatever asshole politician you want. Give it straight to him if you want, you have that right.

But if you actually care about people who are hungry or homeless, you don't need a politician, you can give it where it actually helps the people who need it without getting all political.
.
What will happen this way is that you'll raise 10 or 20 thousand, and 90% of that will go into someones pocket because he "did some marketing" or "ran a website". The people who you think you are helping won't see more than 5 or 10%, and that amount will get spread out among so many that it'll be $10 or less per person that gets any kind of aid at all.

Take $50, find someone who is actually homeless (or about to be) and hand it to them. That will do a lot more for them than giving $50 to Paul Ryan.

Ace25: Question, on the donation page it states something to the effect of "They will request that the money is donated to this particular soup kitchen".

Legally, if you specify that your donation is for a specific purpose or program, the recipient must use it for that purpose or program.

A link to the donation page has been added to the story on Salon about the soup kitchen problems.

2012-10-20 04:25:41 AM

jevvim: So what if a specific soup kitchen was losing donations? It's not like they're the only charity out there feeding the poor. An apolitical organization can let a candidate in the door to help, but not their camera crew, and donors to apolitical organizations shouldn't be demonized when an organization becomes politicized. But the answer isn't to subsidize the politicized, but to stop subsidizing them with donations. Everyone who donated to this indiegogo = FAIL, unless they like supporting political charities.

You don't seem to realize: Republicans are boycotting them because they said their official stance was apolitical and that allowing Ryan was against their policy.

I gave $25 directly via the PayPal link. They seem to need money now as well as later, also thought the PP fee would be less than Indigogo's.

kazikian: Now that THIS soup kitchen has all the publicity it needs, how about helping your LOCAL soup kitchen instead?

Yes. And remember, this is an example of a community outreach activity undertaken by a church.

JuggleGeek: Take $50, find someone who is actually homeless (or about to be) and hand it to them. That will do a lot more for them than giving $50 to Paul Ryan.

Looks like someone didn't read the Indiegogo link, the thread, or much of anything else for that matter.

soup doesn't have much protein, it's mainly carbs and salt.

why do we serve this to people? cause it's cheap

i'd rather support a chicken kitchen or a pork kitchen then some soup kitchen shiat..

I think the very thought of Ryan or Romney giving half a wet crap about soup kitchens is too farking hilarious to bear.

Cyclometh: Phins: Ace25: Question, on the donation page it states something to the effect of "They will request that the money is donated to this particular soup kitchen".

Legally, if you specify that your donation is for a specific purpose or program, the recipient must use it for that purpose or program.

A link to the donation page has been added to the story on Salon about the soup kitchen problems.

This is awesome! I just sent her a tweet thanking her for linking to the fundraiser.

Overnight, I also emailed TPM's tip line, and one of our local radio morning shows.

The one I volunteered at got leftover stuff from restaurants and Wegmans (those of you who know Wegmans know this is a Good Thing). Regular volunteers told me it wasn't entirely out of the realm of possibility for the meal to be crab legs for instance, since Red Lobster was one of the donors. The night I was there, it was pasta bake with cheese and sausage, and cauliflower. Unsurprisingly, most of the cauliflower got thrown out =/

Just got off the phone with Brian Antal, the President of the Mahoning District Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. He's having a real interesting week- he's a volunteer and this firestorm landed in his lap.

He gave me permission to pass this note along:

"Thank you to all that are supporting the hard work of our Volunteers and helping the 100,000 individuals we serve annually. The donations, kind words and support are all very much welcome and appreciated.

Brian J. Antal President- St. Vincent de Paul Society Mahoning County"

Keep it up, Farkers! We're doing great stuff.

I am glad that there are still some good people put there. Farks reaction gives me a little more faith in humanity.

I would like to just say one more thing, and that is is that not everyone on the right is like what those bastards are. There are many good people on the right who hate ultrapartisanship. Please do not let the actions of a few becloud your views on them.

I've posted an updated thread. This is going to go on for six weeks, so I'll try to only post an update thread every other day or so.

Let's keep things moving, shall we? :)

Coo coo

I did a google search and it seems that this soup kitchen has had a hell of a time staying open. I wish I could post the URL but I am on my iPad. Remember to add kitchen after its name because there are a billion places with that name
