But I was told that the government needs to confiscate wealth and redistribute it in order for the needy to eat. Was someone lying to me?

PocketfullaSass: Way to go! I am really liking this new FarkUs thing. Give Joe the bird has been tons of fun, and this fundraiser is awesome. I also found a new author up there. It's starting to feel even more like a community than it did before. Kudos to Drew and everyone involved in all these projects!

Yeah, it's great. More than half of the greenlights now are people asking for money for various things, it's awesome.

Donated. Great work guys!

Didn't donate.

However, I DID throw a can of Campbell's at a bum I saw standing on the corner of an intersection I was driving through, so....

BINGO

Does one preclude the other?

Ryan's pissing me off this evening on our local news.
He's a twat.
So I just gave 20.

I'm just glad that there are both sides being represented by Fark in charities (I suspect...I haven't seen the OG thread for the Soup Kitchen and I've seen multiple for Givin Joe the Bird)

Good for all!

Hopefully this will go right up your arse: I gave to both!

Me too! I had to do the whole "matching contribution" thing.

However, I am now well in between paychecks, and I still need food and gas and perhaps the electric company would like to be paid as well. So please dear Fark, please don't go with another great charity until after the 30th?

Wow, had not seen this yet. Thanks for greenlighting this. Just gave them 5.00.

No, but if the goofy religionists and Republicans and warmongers would transfer some cash from the war chests to the people's chests, well, then we wouldn't have to listen to you decry what could be paid for with a few militaristic programs, and/or bombs, no?

W/o your goofy analysis, that is.

Cyclometh: Keizer_Ghidorah: So, is it solely for the hungry people in need, or for a feel-good moment with Paul Ryan?

/hope there's no legitimate raping happening in the kitchen

I realize that it could be taken that way, but our goal starting this was simply to make sure that people who depend on this soup kitchen don't suffer because of partisan politics.

Ah, good show :)

PallMall: Well, I suppose they thought it was a better cause than #GiveJoeTheBird.

I damn sure did. The White House takes all gifts, donations and tax money they receive / collect and throws them in the fireplace. Donations to a soup kitchen are feeding real Americans. Screw Joe. I'll gladly flip him the bird, that's all he gets from me. Don't mean to be grumpy, I just hate scumbag politicians.

2012-10-19 07:08:35 PM

Cyclometh: Correct, you can donate directly to the Society of Saint Vincent dePaul at their website. There is also a PayPal email that the individual chapter has set up. However, when I created the IndieGoGo campaign the only way to donate was to the national charity or send a check by mail to a PO Box in Ohio.

Gotcha. I'm not trying to discourage people from going your route. I was just very glad to see you made clear that there were other options.

Yeah, I haven't given to charity in years. I'm pretty damn poor myself. But the GJTB was lulz. The food bank feels good. But I'm drinking Yeungling this weekend for the low price. But what the hell, I needed a couple tee shirts.

What you don't realize is that Ryan is playing the long game on this. He knew his visit would cause controversy and eventually result in additional donations. In fact, he is planning campaign stops for every soup kitchen in the country.

(Full Disclosure: I'm involved with GJTB as well as coordinating this one)

To be fair, Give Joe The Bird is not going to donate or give a Trans Am to the VP. That's the joke; the funds will be used to buy one and take it to DC and try to get a photo op with the VP. Since it'll be after the election it has a fair shot of happening, I think. Then the car is to be auctioned and the proceeds sent to four charities- Doctors Without Borders, The Wounded Warrior Project, GLAAD, and the Biden Breast Health Initiative. The joke is that we're buying VP Biden a Trans Am, but it's really about the charity.

If you have more questions about it I'd urge you to ask them over on the current GJTB thread here.

I do need to get gas though, it's down to $3.56!!! I also gave platelets on the way home, so my arms are kinda sore. But they do tell you to "drink extra fluids".....I'm taking them at their word!

semiotix: I'll give them $20. But I prefer to do it through the direct link to the charity itself, which our Farker organizers are quick to mention is an option. (Gotta get that tax receipt, after all. Thanks for showing me how it's done, Mitt!)

I prefer to donate my used underwear and write off the value @ $2 a pair, just like Bill Clinton

I won't rant, but this is precisely because of politics. We would not be doing this unless some jackass decided to make it about politics.

I'll leave it at that, but I think it's silly to say this is simply about charity.

So what if a specific soup kitchen was losing donations? It's not like they're the only charity out there feeding the poor. An apolitical organization can let a candidate in the door to help, but not their camera crew, and donors to apolitical organizations shouldn't be demonized when an organization becomes politicized. But the answer isn't to subsidize the politicized, but to stop subsidizing them with donations. Everyone who donated to this indiegogo = FAIL, unless they like supporting political charities.
