IMHO He threw the Mormons under the bus in the last debate. When he referred to himself as a Pastor he was dissing the Mormans. They have been trying for years to be a mainstream religion. He acted like it embarassed him to say he was a Bishop. It's like having a friend for 10 years , then he gets new cool friends and acts like he don't know you.

He wasn't a Bishop. He was a Pastor.

Mormons don't have pastors is what I've heard. "Pastor" is being used to make him more palpable to the christian right.

curious, what was his title in the church? or do they even have them?

Romney served as a Mormon bishop from 1981 to 1986

No he was a Pastor in his church.

My Mormon family are actually ashamed of him for not being proud that he is a Mormon, instead choosing to put on the costume of an everyday Christian with the completely made up 'Pastor' term. My Mom said she didn't see him as a 'real Mormon'. It's going to hurt his MO vote...or not.

I'm not Mormon nor religious at all but that's my feeling. If faith is truly a large part of who you are then embrace it. He has no true core, nor values nor soul. Everything is calculated.

Amos Quito: There are many people (especially Christians) who are skittish about voting for Romney out of fear that as a Mormon, he'll be getting his marching orders from Salt Lake.

Outsiders seeing an article in the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE endorsing OBAMA might go a long way in alleviating those fears by leading them to believe that Romney and the church leaders don't see eye-to-eye.

This article isn't going to make a whit of difference in Utah, which will undoubtedly go for Romney in ANY case, but it may well swing enough fence-sitters in other states to push him over the top.

Kudos to Romney, and to his bosses at Temple Square.

Well played, sirs.

What the hell are you talking about? If that was genuinely the strategy, then it's a pretty risky one. First of all, the Christian conservatives who are wary of Romney's Mormonism aren't exactly known for picking up on such subtle messages. And second, this is far more damaging for Romney as it again highlights how even people who SHOULD support him don't because he lacks character and conviction.

Not a good day in Romneyland.

There have long been "two papers" in SLC, the Tribune and the Deseret News.

Ever since Utah applied for statehood, the church has made efforts to put up a front to hide their authoritarian rule over the state. The Tribune was created to serve that purpose.

Deseret News / Salt Lake Tribune = "good cop" / "bad cop".

Obama's foreign policy record is perhaps his strongest suit, especially compared to Romney's bellicose posture toward Russia and China and his inflammatory rhetoric regarding Iran's nuclear weapons program.

Before the debates the scariest thing about Romney/Ryan was the supreme court justices these social conservatives were going to nominate. After the debates and the lies Ryan was telling the upcoming Iran war is scarier.

ISO15693: mobile_home_refush:

Was I correct that he insulted Mormons when he called himself a pastor instead of a Bishop?
//That truly troubled me.

No, Not at all. Bishop is a title, pastor (little p) is more of a description of function. Joseph Smith himself described the office of Bishop as a "pastor" when he laid out the foundational "articles of faith" in explaining lds beliefs to non members.

#6 " We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth."

I honestly dont know a single member who felt slighted in the least. The LDS church also doesnt have "congregations", it has "wards" - but using "congregation" when talking to non members is also just a way of using familiar terms to convey the idea.

His title was "bishop", which is the title of a pastor, someone who is watching over the flock.

The word pastor comes from the old french word for "shepherd", meaning one who watches over the flock.
The word bishop comes from the old greek word for "watcher", meaning one who watches over the flock.

It's literally a complete non-issue among members. It would be like arguing the difference between "teacher" and "instructor"

Why didn't they use the word bishop and ward then? Does it feel weird that he is ashamed of his own religion? Too cult-like for mass appeal?

The other thing is that your fellow Mormons will also do or say anything to get Mitt Elected, as having a Mormon President would finally legitimize their religion to the masses. The president of the Mormon church would rule all of America, he is the one that talks straight to God.

Mormons never call a bishop "pastor" to his face, ever. Seriously, the concept never even registers as a possibility. I've never once heard a bishop ever refer to himself as a pastor.

At best they will explain to others that a bishop has many of the same roles that a pastor has in order to clarify some of the confusion that may come about due to the historical use of the term "bishop".

Romney referring to himself as having been a "pastor" was a PR move, pure and simple, in order to try and make his faith appear more palatable to many in his party that have less than positive views of the LDS faith.

fta Sadly, it is not the only Romney, as his campaign for the White House has made abundantly clear, first in his servile courtship of the tea party in order to win the nomination, and now as the party's shape-shifting nominee. From his embrace of the party's radical right wing, to subsequent portrayals of himself as a moderate champion of the middle class, Romney has raised the most frequently asked question of the campaign: "Who is this guy, really, and what in the world does he truly believe?"

He's got Romnesia. But there's good news! Obamacare covers preexisting conditions.
