And so it begins . . .

Little did the citizens of the 21st Century know about the magnitude of the changes they had wrought to the dominion of the animals, but the people of our world and our age must learn these lessons if we are ever again to emerge from beyond our moats.

Warrener: bubo_sibiricus: Speciation is only sticky if you believe the world is 6000 years old.

And if you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.

Believe what you want, but speciation is pretty tricky to explain in general. It's only been pretty recently that we've been able to observe it.

From memory of bio 102 there was an accidental experiment involving some sort of ocean worm, and from an EP book I listened to recently they've found a guy in China who is perfectly healthy but only has 22 chromosome pairs.

Speciatiion is only tricky to explain because it's totally artificial. Humans made up a definition as to what constitutes a biological group and then try to shoehorn everything into that definition whether it fits or not. Just as a for-instance, we've got Canis lupus, the wolf, and Canis latrans, the coyote, which should be separate species, but not only can they breed successfully, they often do in the wild. Only very recently was C. familiaris made a subspecies of C. lupus.

It's just not as clear-cut as humans want it to be. Nature is very messy, despite our best efforts to make it all neat and tidy.

I like .22 ratshot. Physics and chemistry working in harmony.

This is not evidence of evolution, clearly these rats were designed by some superior being. Presumably as punishment for teh ghey or womyn or some such.

The kid on the left in the last panel kills me every time. Not only did he probably shove his friend down and run away, he later died of a heart attack and was eaten by the Secret Mutant Hero Team.

Meh, most rat poison is just anticoagulants, I worked in a factory where we made it and I liked to eat it in front of new hires just for kicks. That being said some of it isn't just anticoagulants, so know your rat poison before you eat it.

Private_Citizen: I was watching "insomniac" with Dave Atell years ago and Dave was in New Orleans. That city has a problem with nutrias, which are basically rats the size of corgis. Dave rode in the back of a pickup with a SWAT guy who was using a silenced .22 rifle to "thin the herd". It was quite effective - and I doubt any rodent will develop an immunity to small arms fire.

/at least, I sure hope they don't!

As I mentioned up thread and I'll reiterate: Have fun with all the chemicals you'll need to mask the open graveyard between your floors.

And after a week of brazen predation (little bastard would come out of the wall and stare at me while I worked), that snapping sound is sooooo satisfying.
