This. Fake sugar tastes like shiat and I can detect sucralose/aspartame/any of that garbage almost instantly when I taste something that contains it.

/I might sound fat, but I'm not.

I lost a good 10 pounds switching from regular to diet mt. dew.

so I'm thinking the weight gain part of the study i people thinking "hey I had a diet soda, I think I can 5 more cheeseburgers and fries"

Yup. And you'd have to be an idiot to fun a study that finds fat people drink more diet sodas and assume that the latter causes the former. Fat people drink more diet sodas because they don't want to be fat.

All the studies quotes in the article seemed to apply to people who drank two sodas a day or more. Diet or not, that's a a lot.

Soda (non-diet) was the single biggest contributing factor to my weight gain a few years back, and I wasn't having three a day - more like one can of Coke per work shift.

I've lost all that weight and then some. Soda is a rare indulgence for me these days.

That whole article is just bs crap.

#1. No proof but it might be the cause
#2. "Whether that link is attributed to an ingredient in diet soda or the drinkers' eating habits is unclear. But is that one can really worth it?" So it's not the drinks fault but the persons.
#3. "That means people who consume diet foods might be more likely to overeat, because your body is being tricked into thinking it's eating sugar, and you crave more." Again same thing not the drinks fault.
#4. Get drunk faster... I'm in!!!!
#5. As per the article they don't use that ingrediant anymore and the new one in pure form (not mixed) is an irritant.. Who cares I'm not mixing it myself
#6. Pepsi is 2.46 which is MORE acidic than diet pepsi
#7. "Sometimes, the vessel for your beverage is just as harmful. Diet or not, soft drink cans are coated with the endocrine disruptor bisphenol A (BPA), which has been linked to everything from heart disease to obesity to reproductive problems. That's a lot of risktaking for one can of pop." WTF is this crap

Wow that was someone that likes normal soft drinks and wanted to try and justify why Diet ones are bad. Don't get into the positives just look at rumored negatives.

That having been said, Diet Dr. Pepper is the most normal-tasting diet soda on the market, IMHO. For a while I stuck with Zero Coke but it gave me the runs.

I'm always a little confused by the diet soda hate with regards to weight loss. Seems like some people just hate the idea of fat people having anything to enjoy as they try to lose weight.

I switched to drinking Jack and Coke zero from regular coke. It takes a bit to get used to the different taste, but I have yet to wake up with a hangover from it.

I've no proof whatsoever but I think things that are so artificially sweet can't be doing your body or brain any favors - either in terms of direct impact or indirect actions they might cause

Try any diet orange soda. They don't universally taste terrible like colas. Diet Orange Crush is pretty good but it still has a bit of sugar. Helped with the transition at least.

I was a coke drinker for years. Like a three liter a day. Then i switched to diet and did that for a few years. Now i drink sweet tea like an addict. I can't stand soda anymore, diet or regular. The people that work at mcdonalds where i get my sweet tea fix every (sometimes several times) day laugh when i show up. They have all asked how i can stay small and drink all that sugar. Diet soda was the only one that put weight on me.

2012-10-19 12:52:19 PM
Well...shiat.

I drink at least two diet sodas a day. Probably closer to four or five.

I am the poster child for part of what this article is about. I am borderline metabolic syndrome and I can't seem to lose weight. Maybe ten pounds here or there. My diet hasn't been stellar, but I should be losing more.

God damn it so much. I really like my Diet Coke.

Guess I'll have to ditch that and switch to Dihydrogen Monoxide.

Fark it all to hell.

2012-10-19 12:53:00 PM
I drink 6-12 diet sodas a day, along with lots of water and a reasonably healthy diet. I also exercise regularly and lead an active lifestyle, so I'm totally shiatting my pants right now.

2012-10-19 12:53:02 PM
Sounds like bullshiat to me.

2012-10-19 12:56:58 PM
Downing just two or more cans a day increased waistlines by 500%

You know, I'm sure diet soda isn't healthy, but this seems like either misinterpretation of numbers or complete bullshiat. Drinking two cans of diet soda a day is not going to make a 30" waste a 180" waist.

2012-10-19 12:57:34 PM
That's why I switched from zero calorie soda to bath salts. Sugar free soda was ruining my life.

2012-10-19 12:58:02 PM
Went from 260 to 210 changing absolutely nothing else except switching from regular to diet coke. Drinking 10 cokes a day is around 1400 or so calories. I also won the Nobel Prize, got a super hot girlfriend, got a big pay raise, cured cancer, and learned to dance the Merengue. Wow! Thanks Diet Coke.

LOL I thought that was funny also but I assumed they meant change is waist size. Saying you gain 5 inches of waist on Diet per 1 inch of waist on regular which even in itself is just plain as day bs.

Well played SUBBY... I LoLd....

I don't see why people say DIET TASTES LIKE CRAP!!! It's not supposed to taste the same and is an entirely different product.

It's like trying to say "Sprite tastes like crap... it tastes nothing like Pepsi.."

That said, yes, it's bad for you in excess... just like anything else.

2012-10-19 01:09:06 PM
Between Diet Coke and Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper, I take in about six cans a day; maybe more on weekends. A pot of black coffee isn't unusual, either. Water is something I shower with, not drink.

I have to work at keeping my weight up to healthy levels, though. Probably has something to do with the fact that I eat one meal per day.

None of the points they have listed bother me. I don't want to grow old anyways.

I had a major "Tab" addiction for most of my life. Easily 4 cartons a week; it was literally the only thing I drank. (I blame my mother's perpetual dieting in the 70s; growing up, if you wanted a "Coke" in our house, Tab was the only thing going. To get real cokes, you had to visit the grandparents. And over there, cokes were not a beverage, they were a treat.) As I grew up, I came to preferTab to everything else; real cokes tasted funny. Little did I know why- I figure "real" coke stopped appealing somewhere in the mid-80s; probably around the time of the switch to corn syrup. They're all too sweet, now, the American sodas.

Then a couple years ago, I tripped over mexican cokes in the store, and went, "hey, glass bottles!" Bought one, and it was like being a little kid again- cokes tasted right all of a sudden. Real sugar, who knew? I started picking them up weekly, and without even trying to, I ended up getting off the Tab habit. But it also cut my soda-drinking habit down to nice, normal levels. I have one or two bottled sodas a day, now, not half a carton of cans.

Diet soda gives me headaches.

Of course that could be a side effect of the rum.

They can have my Coke Zero when they pry it from my cold, dead hands. Far better than Diet Coke, I can't tell much of a difference from the real stuff, other than I'm not thirsty twenty minutes after drinking one. (That sugary stuff just makes me thirsty.)

I'd be willing to bet that if you drink the coke that comes in the glass bottles you wouldn't be able to taste the difference. I bought a case of mexican coke at Sams one day and it does taste good but I tried the regular coke in glass and it tasted the same. It's the whole mind trick since you think it's different and the fact that it doesn't flow out of the glass bottles as fast. Kosher coke is the same but haven't really seen that locally in years.

Articles like this are full of "mights" and "may be" and "suggested". The media takes inconclusive studies and tries to turn them into hard scientific fact. No details are given on the studies other than maybe a large number of participants. Sure, a lot of this stuff "might" be true, but all they have here is a reason to do more research.

And I loath articles that claim "you don't know" this. Shut your farking mouth. You don't know what I know and don't know, motherfarker. Saying shiet like that just makes you sound like a prick that I don't want to listen to anyway.

2012-10-19 01:17:42 PM
I drink 4-12 regular sodas a day, along with terribly "unhealthy" food in quantities of 4000+ calories. I do not excercise. My bloodwork came back perfectly, I have no medical issues that I'm aware of, my teeth are pearly white and my BMI is 18.5.

I remain unconvinced that food can have as extreme of an impact as we're lead to believe.

It took me a whole 3 weeks to get used to the taste of coke zero. After drinking it exclusively for 5 years I can't drink the sugary coke anymore. When I try it I can only taste sugar. Which makes me want to vomit.

It proves that the sugar tastes likes shiat.

Oh and btw if you wonder how much sugar there is in a cup of coke,

This is completely disingenuous, this scale is logarithmic.

With a pH of 3.2, diet soda is very acidic. (As a point of reference, the pH of battery acid is 1. Water is 7.)
