hbk72777: lost almost 100 pounds drinking Diet Coke and eating carbs (bagels, cereal, pizza, macaroni etc). If you listen to anyone, they'll tell you you can't have soda and carbs and still diet, just eat meat and tea. Bullshiat. If you keep your fat at 20gs a day and your calories at 1200 a day, you can eat cake for every meal as long as the slices are small enough. I only ate the occasional burger, hate steak/roast beef etc. I drink 3-4 liters of diet coke every day, have been sine high school (early 90s). I ain't dead yet.
For every scare tactic these authors put out there, I can show you a 85 yr old 3 pack a day smoker without lung cancer and a 92 year old daily Vodka drinker.

I eat a ton of carbs, a ton of chocolate, some diet soda (not as much I used to) and no red meat. Haven't since I was young. I also exercise and drink about 2 gallons of water a day, no lie.
I'm actually skinnier now than I was 10 years ago, despite putting away half a bag of chocolate chips some nights. I'm pretty sure it's acting as an antidepressant. And yes, I am farking healthy. Oh yeah--I eat almost no sweets except the chocolate. But you can pry that out of my cold dead hands....

That "paleo" shiat is for the birds. I'd throw up if I had to eat red meat every day.

And I can show you ten graves of people who died in their fifties of lung cancer and cirrhosis. So?

/everything in moderation

Instead of naturally or artificially sweetened sodas, I make seltzer at home with my SodaStreamTM, and then add flavor to it by adding a few dashes from my large collection of bitters.

/I may be a hipster.

someguy945: With a pH of 3.2, diet soda is very acidic. (As a point of reference, the pH of battery acid is 1. Water is 7.)

The article is interesting but that is a terrible point of reference. With some additional outside knowledge you might be able to gauge what a 3.2 is, but if you have that level of knowledge then you already knew that water has a pH of 7 anyway.

Here's a better point of reference: the bodily fluid that greets the scary diet soda in your stomach is maybe 50 times more acidic than the diet soda.

Drinking two HFCS sodas a day, you will pack on 30 pounds in a year. 45 pounds if Mountain Dew.

Changing to diet saves you those pounds, simple as that.

Funny, because for a couple of years I drank about 4 cans of Coke a day and I never weighed more than 220, and I was not regularly exercising at all during that time. And my normal weight is around 200. By your reasoning I should have weighed 260. Some of my friends should weigh about 500-900 pounds. Sorry, but you simply cannot count up calories, crunch some numbers, and then say, "You will will add X amount of pounds a year if you eat this or that Y times a day." It just does not work that way.

So you were deriving 500 cal/day from HFCS, and some of your friends were receiving 1000/cal a day.

Just curious how you do that, and I am sure half of America is too. Most people with that diet look like Honey Boo Boo and family.

Holy shiat you people drink a lot of soda. I average about two diet Cokes a month.

/don't ask me about the amount of bourbon or gin I drink though, I won't answer.

Gawdzilla: "I'm completely unlike 99% of the population, therefore 99% of the population is misguided". Does that really seem like a logical conclusion to you?

No, no. Don't get me wrong here. I understand that I am an exception to the rule in that regard. I suppose I should have split that into two posts.

I understand that there are direct correlations between certain foods and certain health claims, I just don't think that they are as extreme as people make them out to be. How many times have you heard ridiculous claims about (certain food) MAKES you fat, or (certain ingredient) GIVES you cancer, or broad generalizations like "fat is bad" and "carbohydrates are bad." Well an excess of basically anything is bad, but eating fat doesn't make you fat -- eating fat and not burning it off makes you fat, the eating fat part just makes it more likely.

I guess this may have been the wrong thread to post that earlier comment anyway, as it's more of a health claim than a chemical additive claim.

/scrawny type 1
//like 6'2", 150 lbs scrawny
///sugar will kill me faster than any of the evil stuff in diet sodas

Preach it! I can't drink normal soda. I would but even taking insulin screws me up later. I love me some Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: Perhaps normal in modern Real America™. Soda is horrible for you. Having one, much less two a day is not healthy.

Don't you have a gym to be at in 20 minutes?

"Cocktails made with diet soda get you drunker, faster, according to a study out of the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia."

My home town researches the important things.
