What's wrong with black faced guys hanging from trees? ;)

In other news... I thought St. Louis was a big city... some little spat at the zoo is the "Top Story"?

I don't know who to side with here.

On the one hand, it's Halloween and get over it and all but goddamn those ghosts don't look quite right.

2012-10-19 11:17:24 AM
I have to side with the taking them down people on this one. They actually do look like a lynching during the day.

2012-10-19 11:27:18 AM
They could have doubled down and changed the name to Halloween "spooks" instead.

/they do look like lynched folk though.. should have had them down at eye level instead of up in the branches. Everyone knows that Ghosts dont haunt trees.

2012-10-19 11:27:40 AM
Yeah, those look like lynchings.

As a resident of STL (albeit a transplant) let me tell you that you are incorrect. St Louis is not a big city. It's a small town that resembles a city. Nearly everyone hear knows one another, and everyone is concerned with what high school you went to (as if anyone gives a fark).

Also, it's pretty badly racially divided. Hence people complaining about ghosts with black faces hanging from trees.

2012-10-19 11:46:24 AM
Take them down? You're violating Free Screech!

2012-10-19 11:47:38 AM
Been to the STL Zoo many times, and their seasonal decorations are usually top notch. In this case, the vendor's idea was good, but it does look odd in the daytime. Should be changed anyway, even if no one complained.

As for the complainers themselves: Grow up and quit yer biatchin.

Because that's usually how things work. "Hey, nobody complained. Let's change this."

I was gonna say "Well that's stupid" when reading the headline, but yea, pretty stupid on their part. At least make it multi-cultural!

They dressed people in hooded robes before they lynched them?

2012-10-19 02:12:26 PM
They could say that they were lynching Klan members.

2012-10-19 02:13:31 PM
So the lynched were taken down because of an angry mob? Can we call "irony" on this?

2012-10-19 02:13:39 PM
Why would anyone think of lynchings in Missouri? Oh yeah, 'cause the grandfather of a guy I know was lynched in Missouri. Tag is for subby.

cambie: and everyone is concerned with what high school you went to

Hey, it's just a St. Louis thing. Like provell, gooey butter cake, and our own particular definition of "hoosier".

GAT_00: Yeah, those look like lynchings.

Yes they do look quite dodgy. I don't doubt that was unintentional, but they do. Also, this

Zoo officials said the creative team that made and installed the black face ghosts included African-American workers, but will be replacing the decorations soon to make sure no one is offended when they come to the zoo.

sounds an awful lot like the feeble "I'm not racist, I have black friends" defence.

Yeah, those don't look so good.

Agreed, it's a stupid thing for them to say. All they need to say is "Now that people have pointed it out, we see your point and will be removing them. We failed to consider how this would look during the day and apologize for the oversight."

"ALSO WE EMPLOY BLACK PEOPLE" really don't help.

2012-10-19 02:20:59 PM
Some people just LOVE to whine about any minor annoyance or find everything offensive. I hate that we're to the point of society where everyone suffers because a small minority was "offended".

Kings Island (in Cincinnati) always has funny dioramas of celebrities for their Halloween event. Of course, a few people complained so now it's usual PG rated shiat.

2012-10-19 02:21:07 PM
Who the hell had the bright idea to put black faces on them?

2012-10-19 02:21:47 PM
I'd say they are supposed to look like the Dementors from the Harry Potter books.

But having done a GIS for "lynching", I'd have to say that the people who complained aren't very bright or observant.

2012-10-19 02:24:37 PM
If anything they look like KKK members who hadn't washed up for supper

Zoo spokesman in news video:

"If one person is offended, that's enough for us"

I'm offended that they're offended.

Put them back up.

Well, at least it is better than last year's Christian Haunted House featuring "Daniel in the Lion's Den". They got a lot of concerned calls from that one and because of the would-be hero nearly died trying to rescue "Daniel".

But then, some people will complain about anything.

I throught the diorama of 2 Kings 2:23-25 featuring the Prophet Elisha was tastely done with a nice touch of realism thanks to the incorporation of their two Grizzley Bears and the food treats smeared on the dummies representing the "42 children" who mocked the Prophet's baldness.

For Biblical illiterates and Heathens, here it is:

NIV 2 Kings 2:23-25
23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and jeered(AG) at him. "Get out of here, baldy!" they said. "Get out of here, baldy!" 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse(AH) on them in the name(AI) of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys. 25 And he went on to Mount Carmel(AJ) and from there returned to Samaria.

With some imagination, Christian Haunted Houses can be fun.

Amos Quito: Without Fail: Plant Rights Activist: In the history of the world only black people have ever been the victims of hangings and slavery.

[www.loosenessofassociation.com image 365x236]

Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

Enjoy your vacation.

I would be willing to bet that the "faces" were painted black so the hood would appear empty during the daytime.
I have a black hummingbird feeder that is being lynched in my tree in the back yard..
Should I repaint it or take it down?
Stupid.

I have no idea (or comment, for that matter) about the black faces on the ghosts in question, but I will have to agree with the fact that there seems to be a misperception that only black people have ever been the victims of lynching or slavery. Every single ethnic group has fallen victim to these actions, and yet even the most vague reference to death is somehow a racially-charged statement that OBVIOUSLY is meant to attack a black person. This makes no sense to me.

And the overreaction is not limited to black-skinned figures being hung, either. For a short while, I had a 4" Mr Bill hung by a string noose in my area at work--not an area that anyone else works in, but others do pass by. I had figured that, since I'm a white guy, hanging a white guy (who from SNL was always being killed in interesting manners) could not in any way be a racial statement. Of course, I was wrong. Instead of saying something to me about it, someone complained and I had to take it down.

The next thing we know, people are going to start saying that just owning a length of rope is a racist activity. People need to stop looking for excuses to get their panties in a wad and accept that the world does not revolve around their opinions.

The War on Halloween started late this year

"It was like a complete outrage to me, it was very hurtful," said Chris Burchett, a zoo patron. "The picture appeared to be African-American people hanging from a rope."
"That's a no brainer," he said. "It's impossible that you could not see that that's racist you know, there's no way."

*facepalm*

I agree they should be taken down.
Let's not let people take a fun time like Halloween and turn it into an uncomfortable creep-fest. These realistic looking lynching victims are liable to frighten people.
Ghosts are meant to be fun not representative of people who died in gruesome and inhumane ways.
