Mildly worrisome. The Chinese would be farking stupid to do it, but the Japanese were farking stupid to get involved in WWII. It didn't stop them. Since, as noted above, the Japanese Navy is essentially the United States Pacific Fleet, the whole thing could end up in a nuclear exchange. I'd really hoped that "We're all doomed. Someone's going to push the Red Button sooner rather than later, so lets take all the drugs we can get our hands on while we're drinking ourselves to death!" zeitgeist would become merely a quaint notion associated with the Cold War.

False.

The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force alone is about 46,000 total personnel and consists of some 110 major warships. They have four helicopter destroyer class ships, eight Aegis guided missile destroyers, twenty nine small destroyers, three destroyer escorts, and sixteen attack subs. They have over 150 fixed wing aircraft and 120 helicopters which are used in anti submarine warfare.

This just covers the Naval side of the Japanese SDF which is quite impressive on its own. All in all the entire SDF is about a quarter of a million strong.

Wasn't a zero if it was a torpedo underneath.
Drop tank maybe.
If it was a torpedo he was flying a Kate, Jill, or Grace. (B5N, B6N, and B7A, respectively)

No subby. Don't confuse a Faux Noise story with reality.

/The USSA and Japan have a defense pact. Touch one little hair on one little Japanese head and you'll be dealing with some incoming cruise missiles.

I'd guess he's talking about how prosperous Japan became after we defeated it in WWII. Remember how we used to manufacture electronics in the US? Not anymore. First they went to Japan, then to China.

We had our Chinese team visiting recently and I actually asked one of the girls (who spoke some English) what she thought of it and she almost blew a gasket for me even asking. It got worse when I asked why they couldn't share the island because she said that their leader said it was theirs and war is the only option.

It was odd talking to someone who couldn't grasp the possibility of other solutions to a problem.

Save for the fact that US is bound to defend Japan in a conflict, I wonder if Japan could hold out long enough against a Chinese attack for the US to assemble enough forces to make any level of difference.

I looked up the location of Yonaguni, and... Japan needs to stfu on this one. It's a joke that they're up in arms about Chinese ships there. Do they seriously expect to be allowed to wall off the East China Sea because of their little string of 742 sandbars?

Unless China sent a couple nukes flying Japan could hold China off. The Japanese have a more modern and better trained navy. There's also the Japanase air force (F-15's). Also you do realise the US has a large military presence in Japan right? 3rd Marine division (Okinawa mainly), 3rd Marine airwing (Okinawa/mainland Japan), Kadena AFB (Okinawa). I think our Navy has ships home ported in Japan though not sure on carriers since they retired the Kittyhawk. They did not allow nuclear vessels to ports, I don't know if thats changed. I'm sure I missed some more of our assets there. In 20-30 years maybe they could beat Japan. Present time I highly doubt it.

Actually...the Chinese REALLY REALLY hate the Japanese. No I mean it. So is war imminent....no. The rulers of both countries know how much of a clusterfark it would be. The thing that actually concerns people is that someone could make a drastic miscalculation or mistake....and bad things would happen. How much, or how far is hard to say. Its why folks are a bit nervous here.

One other concern is that the Chinese leadership might be thinking a small war COULD be the ticket to blame for other woes. Its a REALLY bad plan as I dont think the US would be as restricted as the chinese think we would be if they say...took out a carrier. Yeah. So theres some concern that people are either going to make a stupid mistake, or if some leadership position level guy doesn't understand the seriousness of what would occur in a conflict. Even worse is occasionally someone buys into their own propoganda

China invaded India, unless India invaded China. It depends on who you ask. But in the end, if things go south for a country of a billion people, they'll find someone to have a war with. Bringing ill-gotten booty home and taking over dead people's land are always a solution to a sour economy.

The USS George Washington is always in the area. That's a LOT of force projection for the Americans right there.

I read somewhere (seemed legit) that it would take Japan no more than 2 weeks to have 1 or more operational nukes, with delivery systems.

Yup. They may not admit it, but the war with the NVA shows them that they needed to modernize. They still believed in human wave attacks with crap equipment up to that point, but after the NVA showed them tactics can make up for numbers, the Chinese started to modernize their military to European and American tactics and training in utilizing specialized and well equipped teams rather than those idiot human wave attacks.

It's amazing Korea didn't do that. With the number of troops they comitted, they should have easily pushed us into the sea. Instead the best they could manage was stalemate.
